The living room is very old fashioned, it appears that it may have been last redecorated in the 1950's yet has some sort of Victorian flair as if those who lived here were trying to recreate an old Victorian parlour; out in the woods. The room itself seems immaculate and welcoming, there was a wood burning stove that had seen a lot of use over the last few decades. Soft chairs are placed about the room, there are book cases with old books and personal belongings and knickknacks all over the room. On the fireplace are various black and white portraits, on the table is a large bible, and on a small table by the window appears to be a tea set still left behind from whomever last drank from it.

The dining room was well tended, except that it was covered with magazines and newspaper clippings. Strewn about were books and notebooks with scribbles, it looked as if this writing had been going on for decades. Some of the notes yellowed with age and there were even a few among the pile that looked stained perhaps by some blood or unknown liquids. There were a few family portraits on the wall, but one that strikes you is a portrait of the green man in watercolour hanging on the wall.

This room appears to be a standard kitchen, the window overlooks the garden and you can reach the back yard from this room. Outside the window you see a very well tended and quite loved garden. It is decently sized in length back to the woods. Far off into the distance appears the tops of the outbuilding surrounded by forest.

With the directions written down, Matilda sat in her very old car, a dark blue Chevrolet Aveo to give them a quick read “hmm I think I can do that” she says to herself before getting a cd from the front seat “Ahh that looks good” before putting the CD in (The Smiths The Queen is Dead) she put her belt on before setting off.
The journey is dull. Plenty of open road, it seemed like not many people went up here. Her mind drifted towards possible other volunteers and she felt worried. What if they knew about her religious leanings and wanted to stop her. The best case scenario would be another person like her, I mean she knows of others. She carried on driving whilst humming along to Bigmouth Strikes Again. The mountains looking beautiful as she drove along. The village looked quaint but she did not stop. She had a quick flashback to British villages and the ones she visited, but they had life in them. This place had none. It was a little odd. She knew she wanted the house at the end of the lane but had no idea how far it was down this lane. After driving down this lane she saw the house in question and it seemed that she would not be the first one here.
She was correct as she saw someone there already.

A minivan came up the road behind Matilda and pulled into the drive, the drive (Officer Simon) steps out of the car and walks up the path towards the front door with some keys. In the van are two men talking (Jimmy and Caleb). The officer slides the key into the door and peeks inside, calling out; there is no reply from within.
"Alright, everyone, all we know is that the gentleman who owns the house is in the hospital back in Arkham. His wife is still being reported as missing, but we do fear that something has unfortunately gotten her. That being said, the woods are dangerous so don't go alone. The house is exactly as he left it, there are no obvious signs of a struggle; only suspicious materials and items he has left behind. Thank you all for volunteering to help."
She leaves the door open as she goes inside, she can be heard opening windows, the two at the front by the door are pushed open as she gets some air into the living room before moving into the dining room.

Crunching his way up the drive Jimmy was surprised to find a rather picturesque house and not the backwater shack that he had been expecting. A lot of work had clearly gone into maintaining the place and for all intents and purpose, there seemed, at first glance, to be nothing wrong with the place. He looked back to see if Caleb was there and then turned his attention to the other cars and their owners. They both seemed familiar to him, though he couldn't quite place them. He acknowledged them both with a courteous nod and watched as Officer Simon headed into the house.
"Officer! I'm going to check the outside first!"
Unsure whether she heard him or not Jimmy turned to the others and let out a melodramatic sigh.
"Well, I guess she's not one for introductions! I'm Jimmy, Jimmy T'Pint and the rapscallion you see behind me is Caleb Malloy. I'm guessing you are volunteers as well?"
They were all, himself included, a strange bunch of characters and not for the first time Jimmy wondered if he had made the right decision in volunteering.
"Would, um... anyone care to join me?"
He made a circling motion to indicate his intentions and started to slowly walk the perimeter of the house.

Recalling his training, Jimmy tentatively begins to walk the perimeter of the house. He takes note of his surroundings paying particular attention to the ground, hoping that he can spot some kind of tracks that the original party may have missed. With a sinking feeling, he glances up and notices that a fence is blocking his way. But as his mentor, Freddy Finkerton used to say - 'certainty clears cases' - until he felt he'd done a thorough job he wouldn't stop.
It was only then he noticed the smell.
It crept into his nostrils like a virus, getting worse and worse. Rotting flesh and faeces. He looked up and froze in horror as there before him, directly level with his eyes was a rat or what was left of a rat. It had been nailed to a fence post. On instinct jimmy looked away, only to encounter more rats in a similar state running the length of the fence. Guts had pooled on the floor and several limbs were hanging on by just the tiniest sinew. One specimen had been nailed down through the neck causing a burst of crimson spray across the fence. Birds had picked many of the eyes out and one of the creatures had been fixed to the post with a nail straight through its face. The nail bursting through the top of its skull exposing bone fragments and pulp that must have once been its tiny rat brain.
Jimmy was sickened by what he saw but did his best to hold his composure. Why had none of this been reported to them in the first place? Or had it happened after the last search party had come up here? Probably not, judging by the level of decay. With a quickening of his heart, Jimmy was beginning to suspect that this was more than a simple missing person case, which both frightened and excited him.
Backing away from the rats he turned and walked, a little quicker than he expected, back to the front of the house.

Dickens is leaning against the bonnet of his car (which is a rather old blue sedan). He's wearing a long duster, a hat perched low over his eyes, smoking a cigarette. He looks up as the others arrive, giving Officer Simon a half-arsed salute as she passes him.
He's perhaps in his late 30s, early 40s, seems a bit worn for wear. His eyes have that haunted look of someone who's seen too much, but they're also bright and watchful.
As Caleb gets out of the car Dickens gives a short laugh, then drops his cigarette to the ground, butting it out with his toe.
"Well who'd have thought!?" He smiles. "How'd your sorry arse end up this side of the drink?" Dickens pushes back his hat, revealing his grinning mug to Caleb.

Matilda is looking at these people before she tries to introduce herself. It seems like they know each other in some way. She feels a little bit out of place and wonders if she has made the right choice in volunteering for this. Two men are about to engage in a conversation with each other.
The other man who she sees walking towards the house, almost looking excited to get in there. She followed behind him and looked at him quickly and just replied "I'm Matilda Harrow and I'm going in there" she then thinks if she does know this man called Jimmy. His face looks familiar, but her memory is hazy at best.
She checks to see if the door is unlocked.

Caleb took a moment to realise who was talking to him, when he knew who it was he grinned like the Cheshire cat and covered the short distance between the two men in a stride.
'Well holy shite! If it ain't Dickens himself, how you keepin' fella?'
Taking Arthur's hand in his he firmly shakes it and pats him on the pat.
'So London finally kicked you out then? Me I had to leave the homelands, too many bad memories!'

Dickens clasps Caleb's hand firmly, mirrors the pat on the back, though winces slightly from. Younger man's strength.
"Needed to get out, explore new territories. Landed in Arkham. I mean, books! Who wouldn't! Opened a new shop, made you a partner. You should come by sometime!"
He grinned.
"So, doing some investigation I see. Good for you, me too. Wanna go inside, see what we can find?"
Dickens picks up his messenger bag from the ground at his feet, slings it over his shoulder, and puts one arm around Caleb's shoulder, directing him to the front door.
"Just like old times!"

'Just like old times!' Caleb lets Dickens lead him to the front door, 'This place looks normal enough, Dickens I hope you got your lookin' glasses with you.' he takes his hop flask from inside his coat and offers it to Dickens. 'This here is my new friend Dickens.' Caleb nods towards Jimmy. 'We got off to a rough start, but now we are firm friends.' he smiles at Dickens.
'What do you know about this place Dickens?'

Dickens steps into the living room, taking Caleb's flask as he crosses the threshold. He takes a drink, smiling and coughing slightly, then passes it back.
"I know someone died, and someone has gone missing. Beyond that, I don't know a lot yet. Hopin' for that to change. What about you?"
He nods to Jimmy, offers the other man his hand. "Dickens Moore, old books and lore, at your service." He says, shaking Jimmy's hand then tipping his hat politely.
He looks around the room carefully (Spot Hidden), taking his time to look at everything at least once, often from different vantage points. He's especially interested in the books and curios in the cabinet.
"Nice old place. I wonder who's the next of kin, and if they'd be interested in doing me a deal on these books...." he muses, mostly to himself, then looks around for the detective to maybe get some answers.

Moving into the pristine living room, Caleb starts looking around the trinkets and ornaments that the people lived here have gathered.(spot hidden and listen check)
'Its kinda sad, don't ya think Dickens? I mean that all this stuff, all their dreams are gonna start to fade away and collect dust!' grinning he turns to Dickens, 'Or someones gonna come along and buy up all the dusty ol'books!'
Moving all over the room he takes the flask back from Dickens and offers it to Jimmy, 'Whatcha make off all this Jimmy?'

Matilda walks into the living room where the other three volunteers are, she is taken aback by the room, " woah it just looks oddly well kept" she says hoping the others did think this as well. She then meekly says to the others "I'm Matilda,Miskatonic University Librarian" not hopeful that they heard her.
Matilda scans the room Spot hidden before making her way to the photographs,

Taking a gulp from Caleb's flask, Jimmy looks around, systematically taking in his surroundings. Nothing out of the ordinary that was for sure. Just a well kept living room as far as he could see. He gestures to the photo of the man with the truck with the hand clasping the flask.
"That's interesting, If that's old man Talbott there then you would think he would have done a better job of removing the rats outside...."
His ears prick up at the mention of Miskatonic and suddenly something clicks. The female in the party - that's where he knew her from.

Caleb let Jimmy and Dickens snoop around the living room more, he wasn't really there for his intelligence. He smileds to himself as he gently runs his hand over the glass case covering the bible.
'Here Dickens! Somethin' you might wanna take a look at?'
What Arthur had said about his book store had only just sunk into Caleb's mind.
'You've done what? Really you made me a partner? Well now thats a turn for the books!'

Dickens looks up at Caleb, comes over, looking down at the bible under glass, evaluating its worth as he listened to his friend. [value of book? Not sure of skill]
"One for the books ... good one!" He clapped Caleb on the shoulder firmly. "Door says 'Dickens and Wolfe' ... I was bein' cute!"
He looks to th sound in the dining room, moves that direction.
"You in there, detective?" He calls, as he steps through the archway.

Dickens steps into the dining room, lets out a low "woah...!" As he looks around. He immediately begins browsing what's on the table. [spot hidden, occult, mythos lore]
He becomes so interested in what's on the table, that he probably doesn't notice anyone else entering the room immediately.

Focusing on the table is interesting, but there is nothing 'occult, mythos or lore' related on the dinging room table at all. The table itself is covered with rat traps of varying sizes hidden underneath a ton of magazines and journals about how to catch, trap and even poison small animals (specifically rodents).
This wasn't just a guy doing research, this is -obsession-, everything on the table spread is related from magazines going back decades, to new library books (from Miskatonic), to hand written journals detailing exterminator jobs and how animals were slaughtered in many, many different ways.
Some of the rat traps on the table were not cleaned to a high standard, fluffs of fur were clinging to the springs and some of them gave off an odour that was just disturbing to be around.
Officer Simon was in the room, and she appears to have been looking through the journals as the pages were disturbed. As he rustles around the paperwork he would see her, but she was not looking at the table anymore. Her eyes were transfixed on the painting of the green man, studying it.

Dickens pulls back, wrinkling his nose in disgust, when he realises the subject matter of the research. Rats! What a waste of time! The guy was more than an exterminator, he was obsessed!
He looks up, sees the detective, walks over to her.
"Any next of Kin that you know of? I wouldn't mind making an offer for a few of the books here when w're done." He comes to stand beside her ...Anything interesting here?" He looks at the painting. He's seen similar before, but not with this detail.
