"Who was sleeping?" There was no one else in the room with them. At least, he couldn't see anyone. He checked again, even under the table, before coming backs to Simon.
"Who are you talking about?" He takes her by the shoulder, trying to turn her towards him. "Officer Simon, who was sleeping?"

"The...The painting, the face was sleeping, I swear it!" She points Simon at the water colour of the Green man hanging on the wall. "It's eyes, it's eyes were closed." She looks at him, "Do they look closed or open to you?"

Dickens looks at her, then the painting, tipping his hat back to lean in close and examine it properly.

There was nothing unusual about the painting. It was a watercolour painting of the classic Green man, bright eyed and looking like a rather happy picture. It didn't fit into the decor at all, everything else in the room screamed old people and mountain folk. The green man had no place in the house and was a glaringly hideous adornment to the room. Upon examining it there was no signature as to who painted it, and the back was a simple canvas. All in all, other than not fitting in, it was ordinary to the touch.
Officer Simon backs away from it and goes off into the kitchen fanning herself, clearly just wanting to get a cup of water to calm down. There is the sound of the sink running gently and her taking sips of water from the other room.

"A bit out of place, but nothing odd about it otherwise. Not sleeping, not really awake. Just a painting."
He follows the officer into the kitchen.

Dickens follows Officer Simon into the kitchen, stands back while she gets herself a drink.
"Cosy room. Must've been nice living here ... rat research aside."
He has a good look around [spot hidden, listen], poking into cupboards and drawers

Matilda makes her way to the photos. She sees the man and woman and notes that it seemed they had no children and that they lived here, the other photos must be extended family members or people who used to live here. Her eyes are drawn firstly to the photo of the van saying “Talbott’s Vermin Removal” and glances at it before taking her pen and note pad out to note it down.
She then sees the gentleman who has drunk out of the flask. She feels that she knows him from somewhere, Matilda really only mentioned her profession to see how he reacted, she then walks up to him after he bangs the floorboards and just says to him.
“ I'm really sorry but this might sound a little odd or forward of me but did you work at Mistatonic at all” and just waits to see what he says.

"I swear the painting was asleep when I went into the room. I'm not crazy am I? Of course I'm not, hold yourself together Leila it's just an old house. Maybe there is a gas leak in here somewhere?"
She starts listening to the walls and checking the oven and pipes to make sure that everything was in order. "Did we bring anything to eat? Being in here makes me hungry, it is almost noon."

"Sounds like you need a holiday. I sees nothing strange with the painting, or anywhere else."
He pulls a small paper bag from his pocket, offers her a real English jelly baby.
"Here, some sugar may help."

"Thanks." She takes a jelly baby and looks out the window, "We still need to go out and check out the garden and out buildings. That's the last place the wife was seen alive according to her husband. I also think there is something crawling around in the walls, I've heard a bit of scratching... like rats. For a guy who was really good at killing them, they seem to be everywhere. Guess his warning outside hasn't worked out." She smirks and leans in towards the window, "Somethings out there, moving around in the grass. But I can't see anything with all of these trees blocking the view."

"Could be rats. He seemed totally obsessed with them." Dickens looks out the window at the garden. [spot hidden for things moving outside]

Arthur lets out a long slow breath ....
"Riiiiiiiiiight. Just dandy." He looks back to Simon "so, are we going out into that to investigate? Or are you just keen to stay in here?"

Caleb was late to the happenings of the dinning room, he stood in the doorway and watched Dickens?console the frightened Detective. 'Sleeping pictures eh?' he whispers to himself.

"Well he sort of have to, I mean, that's why I'm here. If I don't do investigations into this missing persons case and find anything out of it then I'll never be more than a rookie in the department for the next year or so... and that pay is shit terrible." She walks towards the door, "Besides, it is just a garden and nothing harmful is out there. Just some dead animals and a locked up shed. A volunteer peeked in to the shed, said she didn't find a body... might be something else in there she missed."

Alone in the dinning room Caleb slowly begins to circle the table three times. He is taking his time so as to not let anyone else see what he is about to do.
On his second lap of the table he hears the scratching from above, taking note to check it out. As he circles the table he mutters the proper respect to the spirits as travels from this realm into the Umbra.
He takes his time to check for any outside spirits influencing the room or house.
'Damn, wish I had a Theurge with me.'
Caleb pays close attention to the smiling painting.
'Spot hidden and listen check please.'

"No worries" she replies as she takes a look at Caleb. She moves away from the photos and her eyes move to the Bible. It might not be important but they must have found it to be important enough to have it out in such a prominent place.
Curiosity gets the better of her as she goes to open the Bible. It might have a page on who it belongs to.

The bible was indeed very special, inside the front cover was the Talbott family tree. The line extended all the way back to Scotland to the 15th century. The branches of the tree follow a fold out page that shows it ending with Mr. and Mrs. Talbott; sadly they do not seem to have any children or notable cousins. Along some of the longer branches are names that are scratched out completely and there seems to be no direct relatives or heirs. The family seems to have arrived in Hillford Village before it was a village and were very likely to be the founding family of the local area.
The branches of the family tree are drawn with ornate green coloured swirls and leaves, as if the family were once rooted into a religion prior to Christianity and still attempted to maintain a connection to the roots of their history.

The book looks beautiful and very detailed as she follows the family tree along making sure she ends up at the current family members as her heart sinks at the fact that they have no children.
After looking at the front inside cover Matilda then turns the page over to see what religion, if any it is for.

The bible itself is a standard protestant bible, very controversial for the age it is. The book is genuine and clearly worth a lot of money in it's really well preserved condition. The item would find a place of prominence in any library and the fact that she was handling it without gloves might cause some alarm due to its provenience and authenticity. If left in this house, it would in time simply decay and be ruined, glass cover or not.

With nothing out of the ordinary at the windows, Jimmy turns back dejectedly and the sound of Matilda's voice and smiles at her.
"I wondered how long it would take you - Yeah only for about 10 years. I'm a research assistant. Still go to the old place now and again. Hope you're taking good care of those books for me"
He walks slowly over to the young librarian and peers over her shoulder.
"I don't know much about theology, but I'd hazard a guess that as bibles go - that's a pretty good one"
Everyone else seems to have moved on. Leaving Matilda to her studies, Jimmy heads to the dining room door.
"You coming?"
With that he leaves the Living room

As Jimmy enters he sees Caleb standing at a picture of what appears to be the mythical 'Green Man' He recalled the image adorned in many pubs back home, but he'd yet to see one this side of the pacific. His eyes scan over the picture looking for a signature (Spot Hidden) before realising that his fellow investigator seemed transfixed.
"Caleb... Caleb.... you okay buddy?"

Upon hearing what he says in response to her question. Matilda smiles at him and politely replies “I just wanted to be sure. My memory is not as sharp as it was” as she still looks at the Bible she continues
.“Yes I still look after the books. Some are kept locked away” she sees Jimmy walk behind her as he mentions the Bible and that he is heading to the dining room. She gently closes the Bible and leaves the living room to make her way to the dining room.
