"Yeah he has told me it is like American Football to Wizard's and Witch's." she nodded softly and then watched as Jillian used her wand on the canvas.
"Ooohh that is so cool! We can learn to cast magic without words!?!" she beamed up at the older student. "Can you teach me that spell someday?!? Please!?" she pleaded as she stood back up and lightly touched the paint. It was still faintly sticky but that was about how she wanted it.
She leaned down and picked up a smaller brush and a brighter green paint and began to add some brightness to the grass and trees in the background. Very carefully picking her spots so that the duller green still had their pop like look.

Not knowing what American Football is Jillian just nods and smiles. She beams at Mattie's appreciation of the spell, "Nonverbal spells are advanced stuff, there are still plenty of spells I need to say out loud but I would love to teach you that spell once you have got the hang of basic wand techniques and everything." she promised, lowering her wand once more for the time being.
She watched Mattie paint with a keen interest, amazed at the girls talent.

Mattie smiled brightly and switched to a bluish green for the waterb this color also having that something about ir making it seem like the water was moving from a slow breeze along with the trees.
"I have some basics down. I have been working since I got my wand on movements. I lifted a painting once before school started and got an owl from the Department of Ministries. Then I also lifted Morticia on the train. She was quite mad at me for that. Of course I apologized but she wouldn't sit with me the rest of the trip here." she chuckles softly.
She paints the bluish green shade in several places, but she is careful not to make it overwhelming. She was silent for a moment as she looked from the canvas to the lake, watching and scanning for a few quiet moments.

"I am surprised the Ministry got word like that, my house has so much magic going on with it as I've said that the Ministry have no idea who is casting what spell." she whispered conspiratorially.
"Big congratulations on managing that though!" she laughed, smiling. "I was never too good until I got to Hogwarts and heavily absorbed myself in the books and experimenting."
She was still blown away by the peculiar shifting of the painting, was it shifting? She looked again and wasn't even sure. She had once taken a single lesson in developing wizard photographs and even that was nothing like this. The figures only moved after being specially developed, not seemingly during their creation.

Mattie took a step back and patted her lip with her brush thinking a moment before she realized she tapped her lip with the paint instead of the wooden end. She laughed and picked up a rag and brushed the paint away. She didn't normally make messes unless she was alone and completely lost to her work. It helped to have someone to talk to while she painted. She liked it, enjoyed it even. It reminded her of the several times she spent the night with Thulile.
"Magic doesn't seem to happen often enough at home. Or maybe I just don't notice it. We do have magical portraits though. Like in the castle. Dad has an entire room of them. They are all people from his going back generations. It was quite a scary surprise at first when they all started talking to me at once." she chuckles as she puts the three brushes into the water and sits back down to clean them while the painting dries again.
She didn't want to ask Jillian to dry it again as she didn't want to come off like she using her or that she didn't have the patience to complete it properly. Her art was what held her together for so many years. She dove into head first and never looked back.
"I guess that would be cool though, being able to practice at home during holiday's without being tracked." she smirks.

Jillian listened, enjoying the young girls talk of her home. It did not surprise her that the Adamson estate had so many portraits. The Penrose line was old, but there were no portraits at home. An entire portrait gallery though, that just made her wonder just how many rooms there was in the estate and how overwhelming it might have been for an orphan to go to that.
"It is great, though I still have to be very careful when I go anywhere else. I still have the trace on me, even if it isn't monitored while I'm at home. I guess your father has too much business to do and everything to overuse magic a lot. Probably travels a great deal as well."

Mattie opens up her small bag and pulls out snacks and drinks and offers to share with Jillian.
"Yea he was gone a lot during the summer between his accident and his father dying and some other stuff going on. I don't know it all but I know some of it. Elijah takes care of the house along with several staff. They all use various magic but they don't over do it. Also dad has a lot of sway in the muggle world as well." she says as she snacks on some pretzels.
Morticia pounces up hearing the bag rattle with snacks and dives her head into the bag looking for something. "What do you want? I didn't bring you anything. You have said enough times you prefer to catch your food and snacks." she shakes her head and Morticia looks up at her as if listening intently to her words. "Look there are small grasshoppers over there. Go catch them." and with that Morticia bounds off to where Mattie pointed. "Silly cat." she says after Morticia left. She opened her water and drank some looking at the painting once more.

"Liliana told me who Elijah is," Jillian nodded, she had not really known any of the other stuff. No wonder her roommates summer had been so hectic that she had ended up staying with Maria.
She accepts some of the snacks with a thankful smile, taking a few bites without wanting to come across as greedy. Morticia's antic bring about a laugh with Jillian shaking her head. "She is so very different from Raven." she observed. So many students had interesting pets this year.

"Yeah she is. Raven seems like a dog of 4 or so years. Morticia is only about six months old. I'm sure Raven had a puppy phase much like her kitten one." she smiled as she popped another pretzel in her mouth.
She looked up at the sky and watched a few rolling clouds as took note of them for the background behind the trees. She glanced at the painting again and noticed a few things she needed to fix. She would have to to do that.
She stood and picked up a small plastic like knife and sculpted some of the paint on the water and then wiping it away and then starting to shape leaves that could be picked out.
"So you going to tell me about this choice you made or you going to pretend I didn't ask? Or is it a personal choice you don't feel like sharing?"

Jillain laughed, "I can't imagine that huge fluffy thing going through a puppy phase!" She shook her head at the image. She had almost tripped over his furred mass a couple of times over the weekend, espcially in the morning. She was still getting used to it all, but he did seem to be relaxed and forgiving enough about it.
She sat quietly nibbling the occasional bite slowly. When Mattie spoke up she was confused at first and then caught on what she meant, "You mean for after I finish here?" she bit her lip, "My parents rather expect me to follow in their footsteps, I had not really thought about it and probably would have ended up doing so but a few things caught me by surprise this summer and I'm trying to figure out my options all over again now."

Mattie continued to sculp out the leaves in the tree with the small knife. Each leaf would take at least a moment or two as they were tiny and past the lake. The front of the picture had a single oak tree off to the side and those leaves would talk longer and much slower as the leaves were much larger to scale then the ones that faded into the background.
"Is the surprise something to do with the married man or something else entirely?" she asked curiously as Morticia came bounding up with a grasshopper leg in her mouth. She dropped it in Jillian's lap and Mattir looked to see what was happening.
She had to pull her focus away as she laughed. "Well seems Morticia is gifting you because she thinks you need to eat more." she shakes her head and looks at the kitten. "See you did good. I'm proud of you. Catching your own snack." she put her tool down and in one leap Morticia jumped into Mattie's arms the two seeming to hug each other in a deep connection of understanding.

"Oh, I wish!" Jillian burst into laughter, distrated from watching Mattie work. She had been amazed at the young girls attention to detail, wondering if she'll put that much care into her classes. "he is sweet and kind and protective and.. well, yes.. but there isn't really a future there." she sighed glumly, not even feeling too embarassed about her momentary babble.
She blinks at the tiny thing that was dropped in her lap, pulling a face before catching herself. "I.. Thank you." she said to the feline, nodding as Mattie praised her for hunting down the insect. She gazed at the two younglings, feeling a quiet delight at how they looked and acted together.

Morticia licked Mattie's nose and Mattie giggled kissing the kitten's nose back. "Okay okay I'll take a break." she sat down amd snuggled the kitten. Laying down in the grass on her side petting Morticia as she curled into Mattie's chest purring quite loudly.
"So what was the surprise then?" she looks at Jillian. Feeling for a moment that she was prying to much but the girl didn't out right say it was personal, so Mattie persisted on getting am answer.

Jillian felt she could watch the two play for hours. Maybe she spent too much time on her studies but she envied the young girl the time with her kitten. As she watched she decided she was going to give Raven a hug when she gets back to her room, preferably when her roommate was not watching. "Just lovely," she remarked, beaming at the two.
She was amused at all the questions, but she had enjoyed answering most of them so far and none had come close to requiring her to break promises if she went to answer. "I got to know some people Professor Kestrel knows, visited her house too even." she said, hoping but not expecting the explanation would be enough.

Mattie peaked up. "Yes you mentioned that you've been to her house. So you've met others? Did you like them? The others?" she leaned in quietly whispering. "Did you get bitten?" she asked leaning back and petting the kitten as she started to dose a little bit.
"I think it would be interesting to meet others. Morticia doesn't like them though or at least she doesn't like Professor Kestrel but she was curious about Balthazar." she added on.

"Bathazar certainly is ever so interesting." Jillian spoke honestly, remembering meeting with the unusual creature. She was still not sure if creature was the right term, perhaps it was a spirit. Leaning close to Mattie she whispered in return, "Interesting to know that Morticia doesn't like them. I have met quite a few, most have been nice enough but not all.. and I've never been bitten!" she pulls a face. "Can you imagine what that would feel like?"

Mattie chuckled. "I wonder. Maybe I'll ask my dad." she says quietly. "I would imagine that it would feel worse then shots. I hate needles." she shivers at the thought of those sharp metal tiny things.
"If I find out. I'll let you know though." she chuckles and sits up, picking up her water to drink. "I could ask more later if you want. I've talked to her before and to my dad as well."

Nodding at the mention of needles, Jillian smiled. All she knew of needles was from Muggle Studies and she did not like the thought of them, just crazy to her mind. "Does your dad know?" Jillian asked, her mind suddenly racing and building thoughts, "He has never mentioned anything about that in class," she continued, hoping the girl would elaborate and prove her theory right.
"I am always interested in hearing more, I could ask her myself but if you are interested yourself then I won't stop you asking. You and your 'aunt' talked a lot about what she is?" she was real curious.

"Yeah we've talked. She feeds from him sometimes, though I gather it might not be as painful as it might sound. Cause he gave her this look when I asked. Like this really adult type of look." she blushed from embarrassment.
"And yea we talked a for awhile. I asked her a bunch of questions when I found out about her being a vampire." she said.

"Oh.." that was an interesting thought that would change a lot of her ideas, Jillian thought. She noted the young girls blush and felt a slight redness to her own cheeks as she imagined it. "I had wondered why anyone would willingly be fed on." she nodded slowly, in the hopes of moving the conversation on. After this conversation with Mattie she could not be surprised that the girl had asked Maria a fair number of questions.
"He doesn't bite her too, does he?" she asked, frowning. She had no intention of explaining that question and fully expected the answer to be a no, but she would be a fool not to ask she thought. "I mean, are they like.. together?"

"Why would he bite her?" her eyes grew wide for a moment. "That just sounds gross." she laughed then "and yea kinda. She spent a day over once and I've seen them kiss before. But I don't think it is like what he had with my mom." she adds.
She wondered why Jillian would ask that question. "Why would you ask that?"

Jillian joins in the laughter, nodding her agreement that it was gross. She had thought that even before learning more. "I thought M- Kestrel was with someone else though?" she asked, hoping she wasn't causing trouble with her own questions. "She told me she was old friends with your father, so I guess I just wondered if there was something there."
"As for the biting," she wracked her thoughts on how to answer there, Maria had mentioned she might raise the subject in class at some point. "The Ministry considers vampire blood a controlled substance," she said truthfully. Then added reassuringly, "I expect he knows that it isn't good though."

"I've no idea, I've never met another one of them myself so I have no idea if she is involved with anyone else. As for the blood?" she had a moment rubbed her head, scratched her head as well.
"So like drugs? I knew a few kids in the home that had drug issues." she added.

"Its something Liliana said, I don't know any specifics." she shrugged, admitting she had no real idea on the subject. She had already shared that she hasn't much experience with relationships in any case. She had never even thought to ask Maria about her personal life, she felt bad about that. They were friends weren't they?
"Likes drugs, yes." she said nodding, "Probably just as addictive." It was close enough to the truth without worrying the young girl she thought.

Mattie nodded her head and let the conversation fall away. She put her water down and slipped from Morticia and picked up her tool again working into the canvas some of the etchings she still needed to finish before the paint dried completely.
She wasn't sure what else to say in the moment so she focused on her artwork.

Jillian felt a little bad that her babbling had spoiled the conversation, she watched Mattie work on her painting and hoped she had no upset the girl.
After a moment as Morticia stirred she raises her wand and begins silently levitating leaves and twigs for the kittens amusement.
"How long have you been drawing and painting for?" she asks after awhile.

She looks back a moment broken from though. "Since about second grade. At least that's when I really go into it. So about five years. I had this one art piece that went to the state fair from last year that won first place for my age group and then second place for national level." she smiled fixing a leaf.
"It was a hue of blues, reds and whites with some greens of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. I wish I could of shown you but it was lost in the explosion." she made a face. "It really was my best piece. I worked on it for like half the school year."

Eyes wide with impressed surprise, Jillian smiles. "Wow, that is truly remarkable.. and that was all before you found out you were magic?" she really was in awe, "No doubt with those new paints and some more practise, perhaps even a little magic you will be one of the best in the world!"
She giggled a little, losing control of a leaf which Morticia prompted jump on and tore apart. "Maybe one day you'll be painting those portraits for your fathers gallery!"

"I've painted a few already. One of my mom and another of Professor Kestrel with Balthazar. I also did one of my dad, but I've yet to give that one to him. I think I might if he isn't busy later." she smiled brightly.
"But none of them move. I think I like the ones that move but I also think they take away from the art. They are realistic by all means. Not a lot of creativity. It is like a picture that moves. I would rather have my art give off more then that. I want it to seem like it moves even if it doesn't. To be able to use my own ideas and mixture of colors instead of what the real world expects."
With the leaf work finally done she sat back down and started to stretch her fingers a bit. They were quite sore from the finer detail and the painting wasn't even half way done yet.

"You have the one of his here at Hogwarts?" Jillian asked curiously. She respected the girls viewpoints on magical portraits, they had their uses by it was becoming clear that Mattie's work could speak for itself without, well, talking for themselves. "I admit that with works like that it all becomes about the paintings subject rather that the artist and what they wish to portray." she hazarded.
"You certainly do work hard." she said upon noticing the fingers.
