Mattie finally had some free time, she still hadn't worked on her DaDa homework, she had no idea what to actually put down. She should check the library out later she thought to herseld as she grabbed her painting supplies and headed off into the afternoon. Painting helped to clear her thoughts plus she really wanted to capture this place.
Morticia loved going out and she was quick to lead the way. Once outside, Mattie set herself up down by the lake. Morticia played with a few insects and Mattie started practicing her few magic lessons she had learned.
With the levitating spell and a few others she set herself up with several times failing. She was glad her paints weren't opened. She chuckled to herself as she put her wand next to her painting brushes and began to outline the lake and the forbidden forest off in the distance.

Jillian had been walking along the lakeside, glad to get some time away from all the crowded corridors. So far the sixth year had proven quite different from what she had expected, but at least currently all her free periods for research and spellwork were not yet needed. She had her wand in hand and was occasionally giving it a swish so that leaves would float up and follow alongside her as she walked though it was not always successful.
When she first noticed the young girl up ahead she considered turning about and walking back the way she came but then she realised who it was. Moving slowly she crept up behind the girl to see what she was painting, dearly hoping it would be nothing like the last work she had seen the girl do. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw it, "Hello there," she called softly, not wanting to make the girl jump.

Mattie was complelty lost in her painting, trying to scale the outlines appropriately. She didn't notice the girl by the lake off in the distance nor did she hear her walking in the grass.
Morticia of course noticed and went up to the young woman and mewed. Mattie heard the meow but paid it no attention figuring Morticia was messing with insects or what not.
When the voice spoke she did unfortunately squeak. Thankfully her outline pencil wasn't a permanent thing to her canvas and she could easily adjust it.
"Hi." she said with a smile. "Lili's roommate right?" she asked as she adjusted the line slightly.

"Sorry.." Jillian winced a little, feeling embarassed about causing the slight if temporary mistake. Kneeling down she scratched Morticia behind the ear and smiled. "Yea, that is right. We hadn't talked much in past years but we've become fairly good friends now. She is a great girl."
She raised her wand, giving it another flick. A reddened leaf fluttered upwards spinning around the small kittens head and away, causing it to give chase. Jillian giggled as she moved the wand from side to side for a moment to keep it occupied before a successful leap had the leaf pounced upon and bitten.

Mattie put her pencil down and watched Jillian play with Morticia. She giggled softly. "She likes to give chase often." she watches as Morticia pounced on the leaf.
"I am glad you both have each other. I hope that in time I find a friend like that as well in my house. It is hard when I have a brother and two friends in Slytherin and then a cousin in Ravenclaw." she smiles softly.
"I am glad we ran into each. I remember camp and scaring you with my painting. I kind of remember. Though not really. Are you okay?"

"She seems likely a lovely little companion," Jillian smiled at the kitten and then at Mattie herself. "Sorry to hear you have yet to make other friends in your house yet though. I hardly had any during my first year actually.. no family either." she shrugged, "Guess what I'm saying is that things will work out and that you should value what you have? I don't know, words of wisdom was never my strong suit!"
She smiled when Mattie mentioned remembering her from the camp, "I wasn't sure you had remembered, I did not recognise you in DADA yesterday but it clicked afterwards. Don't worry about that with the painting, I've had worse frights. I was more worried about you in any case."

Mattie smiles up at the older girl. "I just had stuff going on and nightmares and I always found it best for me to paint or draw them to work through it." She chews her lip. "Words of wisdom always are helpful and those sounded like just the sort." she laughs softly.
"So which classes do you like the most? Are the OWLS hard?" she asks before picking up a brush and started to paint the outline now that the pencil work was done.
"Do you like art?" she asks as she works on the painting.

Jillian joined in laughing about her words of so-called wisdom. "You are quite amazing with a paintbrush," she observed. "I have never had that much of a knack for art, unless you count theory diagrams, runic scripts, hieroglyphs and the like. I do enjoy it though."
"Charms has always been my favourite, more personal creativity and less rigid hard work than transfiguration although that is a worthwhile subject too. As for OWLs, if you put the effort in they are not all too difficult but they should not be underestimated. You have awhile before worrying about that though." she spoke quietly, not wanting to interupt any of the paintwork while talking.

Mattie turned and looked at Jillian. "What is runescripts? And hieroglyphics isn't that like ancient Egyptian stuff? They teach that here?" she asked curiously.
"Also I know they are tests for fifth year, but it doesn't hurt to prepared." she thought for a moment.

"That all comes under the Study of Ancient Runes, an advanced class for third years and above generally." she explained happily, "The ancient Egyptians had rather impressive magic, you know? Runescripts are a form of wizarding alphabet, not too often used though." she draws a rough design of a unicorns head in the dirt. "That is the wizarding rune for the number one, because of its horn you see?" she smiles.
"I think you will do great if you have that sort of mindset, so many students don't even think about their OWLs until fourth or fifth year. The teachers always end up complaining!" she laughs.

Did they? It would make sense though seeing as no one can explain the pyramids." she shakes her head. "I don't understand why a unicorn though. I mean I get the one horn thing but a unicorn?" she chuckles and shakes her head. "I am not sure I would take that class."
She chuckled at the teachers complainants. "They do that where I am from also. So that isn't anything new"

Jillian shrugged, "Truth be told, the animals associated with the other numbers are just as odd. Unless you plan to work abroad or with other cultures, the class is not an important one."
"Your dad is the DADA professor, right? Professor Adamson? That must be strange."

"Yeah I don't think I plan on that. Not really sure what I want to do yet. I'll figure it out eventually. Though will probably something to do with animals." she said as Morticia came over and begged for attention. Mattie sat down and let her painting dry some and began to pet the kitten.
"It really is. In the muggle world, where I come from, teachers aren't allowed to teach their children." she starts to hand wrestle with the kitten. "But this is so much different then schools in New York. I'm not even sure what to write about with his homework assignment. And he will probably except me to talk to him about the dueling club. Which I really don't want to do. I don't like fighting other people unless it is to protect something. Then I'll stand my ground. But I'm not really sure I would like it." she smiles at Morticia's antics.

Jillian smiled, thinking the girl clever for still feeling open about her future. She had her mind set when she was in her earlier years but was almost entirely at a loss now. "I was never allowed pets myself, too much of a risk ay my parents house."
"I don't think Professor Kestrel ever covered that fact in Muggle Studies, suppose it isn't important for us to know when interacting with muggles." she pondered, "You don't need to join the dueling club if you don't want to, Liliana offered to have a word with the Professor if I didn't want to join so I'm certain she would do the same for you. If you feel you have to, you could always think of it as training for when you might need to that protecting. Between us though, I'm duelling this year as I got attacked over the summer." she whispered conspiratorially.

"Why weren't you allowed pets? I mean when I lived in the orphanage we weren't either but that doesn't sound like your issue. There are magical pets. Morticia is one herself. Or half one anyway." she chuckles softly.
"And no I don't suppose that Aun...erm Professor Kestrel would have to go that in depth. That class will be easy enough for me." she pets the kitten as she bumbles off to mess with Jillian's much lonher hair.
"Maybe, but I could talk to him myself if I wanted. I think he already knows it isn't my cup of tea." then she looks up wide eyed staring at Jillian.
"Oh my god!?! Are you okay!?! What happened?!!"

Jillian glanced down at Morticia with an intrigued expression, the only femagic felines she knew that could breed with regular cats were Kneazles, in which case she felt pleased that the cat trusted her. "My parents are magical researchers with the Ministry, our house has a number of odd things in it and a few protective enchantments which are not usual. My folks felt that a pet would be too chaotic with all of that and that it might be in danger." she sighed, a little forlornly.
"Were you muggle raised like Liliana then?" she asked, her expression puzzled over the slight slip of Mattie's tongue. "If he knows it isn't your thing, he won't be much of a father to force you. Especially at your age."
"I'm fine!" she smiled reassuringly, "Was my own fault really.. and I was rescued by a modern day knight," she giggled, blushing slightly.

"Lili was raised muggle?" she asked curiously. "I honestly didn't know that. But yeah I was raised by the state of New York in a home with other kids that didn't have families." she said.
"Well I am sorry you could never have a pet. Ooh!!? We have Great Danes at home and Lady is due to have babies soon. They are use to magic. Maybe you could have one of the puppies. They should be ready for homes come December. O! A perfect Christmas gift!! Do you want one? I could make it happen." she beamed brightly.
"As for my dad, no he wouldn't force me." she laughs softly. "And who was this knight? Was he or she like dreamy from the movies?" she chuckles lightly.

That surprised Jillian, both that Mattie did not know her cousins past but also that she was presumably adopted. It made her think better of the professor if that were true. "Up until she got her Hogwarts letter, or at least that is what she told me," she explained.
She laughed at the offer, "I would have to persuade my parents, but I won't be home to look after it though.." she bit her lip, "I'll be abroad for much of that holiday and then I'll be back here.
"He is dreamy, though he had cut his hair last time I saw him," she pulled a face and then laughed.

She chuckles lightly. "The puppy could travel also. Dad says Baren has magic in him as well so the puppy would also. And hey Raven gets to come here why not another?" she grins.
"Oh so a man." she giggles and leans into whisper. "I have my first crush but I don't think I'll ever tell her."

"I got the impression that Raven was a special exception, but I guess I could ask McGonagall!" she beamed, "My parents can't complain about it accidentally triggering protective charms if I keep it with me. I suppose it would have to get on well with Raven though.. I don't know much about dogs though, I'll have to be pestering you and Liliana for help." she laughed.
At Mattie's other statement she perks up, both surprised and impressed. "You do?" she asked brightly, "Why not?"

"I didn't find out about magic either until my letter. I was already being fostered by Teagan and Dristan by then. The adoption went through about a month ago now." she smiles brightly.
"Well Raven could teach the pup and I'll make sure Lady and Baron do a good job as well." she smiles brightly.
Then she blushes. "Well because she is also my best friend. She was at camp with us and is. Slytherin now, plus I don't know if she likes girls like that? You know?" she giggles again hiding her face by looking back off to the lake. "I rather be her friend then risk it."

Jillian chuckled, "We must have had truly drastically different childhoods then, I can hardly imagine even with my good Muggle Studies grades." she thought for a moment and then gave a circular wave of her wand, concentrating hard. "Orchideous," she incanted, conjuring forth a small and simple bouquet of flowers. "Congratulations on the adoption," she giggled picking them up and offering them to Mattie.
"I did not spend much time with the crowds at camp," she sighed, feeling awkward, "I arrived late after the fireworks or whatever it was and have never been one to socialise too much.. If she is your best friend, I'd hope she would understand though but at the same time, maybe it is best not to know.. My knight is married." she pulled a face in the hopes of making Mattie laugh.

Mattie looked as she heard the spell and then she made a face of excitement. "Aww thank you!" she took the flowers graciously and smelled them, smiling brightly as Morticia stuck her nose in them and started to sneeze. Mattie laughed.
"Yes, I think she would but I don't know if I want to risk it." she shrugs it off. Then she laughed at the face Jillian made. "I am not sure what to say to that. I've had my own problems trying to figure lives and between you and I it is much safer to stay out of it. Aunt Mary and Dad and Teagan had this weird thing going on" she paused. "And I just said what I wanted about it and just hurt to many people. So I let adults and their lives alone the best I can. If it makes them happy. Then who am I to say anything different?" she shrugs.
It was obvious she was perplexed by the whole thing but really didn't want to be involved either. "I tried to help keep my parents together but it didn't work and I think I only messed it up more." she says quietly.
"Also if you need help with muggle stuff I don't mind helping." she said trying to go back to the other subject.

Jillian seemed somber as she listened to Mattie talk about her past. She had noted before that the girl seemed quite on top of things for her age, but no wonder when she had hardly had a choice. She reached out, tentatively laying a reassuring touch on the girls arm. "I did not know any of that.. I am sorry, it sounds dreadful. It sounds like you did what you could, but adults can be odd sometimes." she gives a knowing smile there. "Suddenly the flowers don't seem like enough," she chuckles faintly. "As for your friend, you can always just wait and see how your friendship develops. Maybe in time you'll learn where her interests lie?"
"I'd like that, I still have not figured out half the little boxes on the muggle phone I got over the summer!"

She smiles softly and places a hand on Jillian. "Flowers are perfect. Don't worry about it. I will figure it all out as they do." she is still smiling when she brings up Kiami.
"Yeah that sounds like a good idea. I just hope we stay friends even though we are in different houses."
"You got a phone? That's cool. Mine doesn't work here and I brought my camera also, I've not tested it yet but I hope it works. I would love to work on some art based off animals or landscape or people I see. Also what kind of phone did you get? I have an Iphone. The apps and stuff are easy once you know what the boxes all do. Maybe one day outside of school I can show you?" then she thought for a moment.
"Not sure when though. First years can't leave the grounds except for holidays. Oh wait! You are going to the states right? Will you be in New York at all? I'm going to be there for the holidays to visit my mom. Maybe we can meet up?"

"No electric thing works here, my paents spent two weeks of their free time trying to come up with a charm that would make my Iphone phone work for my birthday but did not have any luck." she shrugs, "I only took it with me in the hopes I will be able to use it on Hogsmeade weekends. It is a shame you can't visit the town, but Professor Kestrel did hint to me that she may organise a night away from school to teach about electronics, so maybe both our classes will get to do that together." she beamed hopefully.
Jillian gasped at the possibility of meeting up in the states, "Oh, wow. That would be great! I don't know where I will be exactly, possibly several places but if I end up in New York at all I would love that! What is your mum like?" she asked, clearly curious of what type of woman would date someone as stern looking as her DADA professor. The aunt mary remark was still buzzing in her head too, but she had no idea how to broach that.

"First years might not be allowed still though because it is outside of Hogwarts. Would the Head Mistress and parents allow such a drastic change? Dad said that the first year rule was here even when he was a kid and that was a long time ago." she chuckles softly.
"Well then, I'll have to, oh I know." she leans over to her journal and opens it to the back page and takes it out writing down her phone number. "Here in case I can't go. That way if you do end up in New York you can call me or text me." she smiles brightly as she hands the written note to Jillian.
"Also my mom is awesome. She is really sweet. I met her in Central Park when our home when there during a holiday weekend. I didn't really hang with other kids and I was in a a bush talking witb squirrels and ducks when she popped into my little hide away. She helped me get back to the home also because they left me behind. And then when the orphanage exploded she took me in. It had a gas leak and I was out with Teagan I think that night? I don't really remember it is all kind of a fuzzy thing really." she says wishing she could remember what happened that night.
"Anyway she gave me this to remember her while I'm at school." she pulls out a small vial necklace from under her robes. It is small and clear with a silvery liquid in it. "It really is pretty. She said some day I'll use it but I'll know when. So I just wear it cause I'm not even sure what it is."

Jillian smiles as she accepts the note, pushing her robes aside to get to her belt which held several pouches and a strip of leather which normally held her wand in place with a snap button. Opening the slightly larger of the pouches she slipped the note inside for safe keeping. "Thanks!"
Her smile grows wider as she listens to Mattie talk about her mother. She chuckles a little as Mattie mentioned talking to squirrels and ducks, not really understanding and then gasped when the explosion was mentioned. "Wow.. An explosion." she was all wide eyed and impressed. She had caused a few small explosions and more than one fire of note, but she had never seen anything that would ruin a building. "So lucky she was there."
She leant in to peer at the vial with a curious expression, "Is it magical?" she wondered aloud, "You could ask the potions professor if she recognises it."

"Yeah me too. The state allowed me to be fostered because they didn't have enough places for all the kids that needed to be rehomed. So yeah, I'm glad she was there also. Did you know she is a model?" she chuckles softly.
"I hvae no clue if the vial is magical or not. Mom just said when the time is right. So I figured I'll just keep it here so it doesn't get lost or ruined. Maybe I'll ask her over Christmas?" she puts the vial away.
"What are all those pouches for?" she asked curiously. "I don't think I've seen anyone with so many of them before."

"A model? That is great, not a job I could do." Jillian giggled, it was interesting news. "No harm asking I think, worse she can do is not tell you. Right?"
At the question, Jillian shifts position on the grass to better point out the pouches one by one, "Those two are empty in case I find anything interesting.. that one is all personal study notes so I don't get them mixed up with class books.. That one has empty potion vials as I got poisoned once, samples you know?" she smiled while explaining, not at all ashamed of her potential oddness. "That one has some gifts I was given for safekeeping and the large one is magical, holding all sorts of stuff. I guess I could just use that one, but habits are hard to shift."
