"Why couldn't you? You're a pretty girl. I bet you could pull it off!" she smiles brightly.
Then she listened as she described all the pouches. "Personal study? Like outside of class work?" she asked then got curious. "Poisoned? You were poisoned once? That's awful! I'm glad you are okay though." she smiles.
"Can hold anything? Like my mom's purse? It holds like seriously anything. She could probably put an entire Thanksgiving meal in there." she laughs.

Jillian burst into true laughter at Mattie suggesting she could be a model, she could feel the flush spreading through her cheeks as she shook her head. "A nice thought, but I spent enough time around people like Professor Kestrel. I know that if I properly brushed my hair and everything I would look alright, but I'm no model." she gave Mattie a happy smile.
"Certain bullies can be a pain.. although the incident at the spring ball wasn't directed at me I think, someone spiked the punch with a potion of some kind." she explained but brightened up as she started talking about her own studies, "Some classes don't go far enough in my opinion, so I like to experiment and see what else works or why certain things should not be done. Notes are important for that."
She giggled at the remark about Mattie's mums purse, "I have never tried putting a whole meal in my pouch but there was a small carpet in mine when I got it! Along with various other odd tools." like an axe she added mentally, she would never forget that part.

"You've spent time with Aun...Professor Kestrel?" she chuckled. "I have to get use to calling her Professor and Dad as well." she shakes her head. "It's odd. Anyway I painted an awesome portrait of her and Balthazar. You should check it out one day if she lets you." she smiles.
"Spring dance? Oh goodness please tell me they don't do those every year" she blushed an extremely bright red.
Quickly she jumped to the next part. "Yeah, I've only just started and I got to ask a bunch of questions from Professor Kestrel but I have so many more. Then I met a werewolf in New York also and didn't get a chance to really ask questions. But I have so many. I just don't knkw what we will learn yet to decide if I should ask thme yet or not."
"A carpet?" she laughs. "At least your barefeet could walk on something soft" she laughs and then opens her journal to a new page and starts to draw a sketch.

"Professor Kestrel and I are friends," Jillian nodded, "I know what you mean though, she invited me to use her name outside school but its Professor Kestrel here. I've met Balthazar too." she grinned, smiling at the thought of the portrait. She had no doubt it would look grand. "You call her your aunt then? I knew she and Professor Adamson were old friends." she felt delighted that some of the little information she had learnt over the summer was of use. It wouldn't help in her exams, but she had found new friends to be invaluable.
"A werewolf?!" she gasped, totally forgetting the question about the spring ball. "Well questions are good! I often get both praised and cursed for being curious," she giggles, "Your father would be the one to ask about werewolves I would expect."
She laughs at the remark about the carpet but didn't add anything else, she had hid the thing in her loft and hoped never to set sight on it again.

"Yes a werewolf! He changed to! Right in broad daylight! So obviously the stories about only full moons aren't correct unless there are different types. Professor Kestrel says there are other types of her kind as well. So maybe it holds true for others? And yeah I planned on asking him just didn't really want to say anything in front of a bunch of other kids." she shied a bit but quickly let it go as eyes started form in her sketch.
"What is wrong with being curious? It is a good thing. That is how we learn about how things work. If we didn't ask questions or challenge the way things work, progress would never have been made." she smiles brightly confident in her answer and looks up at Jillian for a moment before looking back down.
"So what kind of things are at your parents house that could hurt animals? I want to make sure the puppy would be okay." she asks as she keeps drawing.

Jillian nodded slowly, wondering if any of her promises prevented her talking to Mattie about what she knew. All this about werewolves was interesting, they had been covered in a class once she was sure but she had never met one. "You might be right there," she ended up replying. She was impressed at the young girls conclusive leap, though she did not know how much Maria had taught her.
"It annoys some people, especially if you take matters into your own hands.." she bit her lip, "I fully agree with you that you have to try and find out all you can, but there are secrets people will be furious at us finding out and even the process of finding answers can be dangerous if questions aren't enough." she thought hard about what else to say. "My personal studies have lost me plenty of house points and I was searching out answers that time I told you I got attacked."
It took her awhile to come up with an answer to the girls other question, she twirled her wand about her fingers slowly as she pondered. "Security charms mostly.. and some furniture which can be very unhappy about unexpected guests." she started, "Entering the wrong room without permission can cause all sort of horribleness.. and that is without disturbing any of the experiments my parents have going. I would probably have to keep the puppy in my room when at home."

She grins looking up. "No true reward if there isn't a risk in it somewhere though correct?" she looks back down at her sketch. The eyes are done and she begins to outline the cheeks, nose and lips.
"Also why would wanting to know things and going to find the answer's cause us to loose house points?" she looked up curiously. "And I think I can help with training the puppy. Do you want a boy or girl?" she suddenly flips the pages in her journal to find a picture she drew of Lady and Baron.
Baron is a pure black great dane with green eyes and Lady is almost purely white with a few grey spots but her eyes are like ice blue. "This is Baron amd Lady." she turns her journal around and shows Jillian the dogs.

"You could have been a great Ravenclaw with a remark like that," Jillian laughed, remembering how she had said something similar herself more than once over the summer. "School rules have to be enfored?" she shrugged in answer to the question of house points.
She had just started peering at the book wondering what she was drawing when the page was flipped. "They look adorable, I bet their puppies will be beautiful!" she remarked as she looked at the picture, beaming brightly. "I had not thought that far.. I don't know, does it matter?" she pondered, feeling a little silly. "Help with training is probably a must.." she fought hard not to look down.

Mattie smiles brightly. "They are really good dogs and friends and companions. They just hang all over you when you are sad. They get really big though. Baron is much larger in height then Raven though not as bulky and Lady is only slightly smaller." she said with a smile as she turned and looked at the picture. She drew this two months ago and felt like she could do one better with the lessons she had received from Thulie.
She had a sad smile for a moment missing her mentor in the arts. The moment passing from her face she buried it down and looked up. "Are there rules for not beinf able to do your own research?" she asked as she flipped back to the page she was onb careful to avoid the darker drawings that she knew bothered Jillian.
She started to finished sketching the facial features as she spoke again. "And no it doesn't really matter as long as they are given a good home, taken care of properly and if you don't plan to breed the puppy to get it fixed. There are enough unwanted animals in the world." she said sadly. Maybe she would do that. With magic on her side she could run a large shelter and use her art work to keep the place running. It was an idea and she flipped to the front of her journal jotting it down as a note for a possible future plan. Turning back she smiled up at Jillian as Morticia came darting over and crawled up into the older girl's lap for a cuddle and nap.
"Why would you think I would make a good Ravenclaw? Do you think the sorting hat was wrong? Can it be wrong? Do people switch houses? Or can they?" she was quite curious now as she threw out several questions on top of the other.

Jillian was surprised to hear how big the dogs could get but did like the sound of their personality. "I will have to think on it and talk to my parents, McGonagall too. I'd certainly like to think I'd take care of a pet properly, though I'm still not sure. Why looks after Baron and Lady while you and your dad are here?"
"Magic can be dangerous, I have hurt myself with my research a few times but also made an improvement or two, at least for my own personal style." she smiled a little proudly, "The teachers do not appreciate students putting themselves or others in danger though, so detentions and the loss of house points happen. I'm my parents daughter though."
"The hat was enchanted maybe a thousand years ago by the founders, I don't know about it being wrong." she said, pondering the question before giving Mattie a friendly smile, "You're inquisitive and are willing to take risks for knowledge. To me that is Ravenclaw, but my parents said that people said the same thing about Hermione Granger but she proved more than anything that she was a Gryffindor. McGonagall too. So I think you'll show yourself to have a level of loyalty and dedication which will surprise everyone!" Jillian felt sure of that, she never took an interest in house politics but she felt if the hat could detect hidden bravery beyond even the intelligence of those two famous witchs, then it must have seen something truly Hufflepuff in the yound girl beside her.

"Elijah takes care of the dogs when we are away. He runs the estate." she said as she moved from the facial features to the hair. The sketch was oddly looking familiar.
"I don't know much about the story behind who Hermione is. Dad said I'll learn more during Magical History? Though he did buy me a few books as well to read but I've not read them yet. I probably should." she adds as she falls silent for a moment focusing on the hair and the goggles on the head as well.
"I think the hat knew me better. I was surprised that I wasn't in Slytherin or Ravenclaw but Dad seemed to think before hand as well that I would of been either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. So he guessed correctly at least partly." she chuckles.
"What sort of experiments have you done? And did you get help from your parents? Like their notes? And what did they say when you go in trouble?" she asked looking up briefly before going back to her sketch.

"History of Magic is one less I'm glad I've dropped, I enjoyed some recent bits and general knowledge but the names of whatever goblin did what during some thing three hundred years ago.. just blegh" Jillian pulled a face. "There was never any question of house with me, I don't consider myself too courageous and I only this summer just gone I made a big decision to pick knowledge over personal freedoms, excitement and power."
She caresses Morticia's fur while trying to place what the sketch was of. "I prefer my own notes, classes have changed a bit since their day. They accept the occasional trouble, they want me to take after them after all." she smiled, looking down at the kitten as it slept, "Most of my research has involved intentionally casting spells incorrectly to see what happens. Slightly different word inflections or wand movements and the like. Sometimes it backfires, but I found a couple of variations which I like."
"What sort of spell do you hope to learn first?" she asked, curiously.

"I am not really sure what spell's I wish to learn first. Maybe something to help life grow or help animals or something with art." she looks up for a moment with a grin and continues her sketching. She just needed to finish a few more things.
She propped her knees up and hide the drawing away intentionally and worked on the finer details. "So what choice was it that you made then? A career path for when you graduate? Also I think experimenting is smart because I am sure people did that to write spells in the beginning anyway and probably still do. I get that."
She looks up again and makes some more adjustments.

Jillian beamed at Matties understanding, "That is actually my parents job at the ministry, testing new spells that are submitted, occasionally coming up with their own, determining potential side effects of certain magic. As I said, I had an interesting childhood.."
"Interesting answer there.. Have you heard the theory connecting the four houses to the traditional elements? Hufflepuff's are supposed to be closely tied to the earth, so your love of plants and animals might be part of the reason the sorting hat selected you for that house." she chuckled softly and then her curiousity got the better of her, "Who are you drawing?"

Mattie smiled with excitement. "That must be an awesome job!. Do they love it? I bet they do, it is probably why you experiment all the time like you said." she chuckles.
"I didn't know that was Hufflepuff's reasoning for it's background. That would make a lot of sense though as to why I was sorted there then. I wonder what Herbology amd Magical Creature's will be like. I'm quite looking forward to both classes." she said with a bright smile.
She continued to add the finer details to the sketch, it was after all the most important part. To set people apart from others, it was always in the detail. She looked up and wondered for a moment why Jillian choose to ignore her question. Should she ask her again? Maybe she didn't hear her? Though that wouldn't make sense, she heard everything else Mattie had said. She put it aside for now, maybe Jillian wasn't ready to announce her choice or her choice was a secret. ooo I like secrets. I wonder if I could discover it on my own she thought with a giggle.
"Oh well, you see, I love to draw and sketch like I said earlier. You are quite a beautiful person whether you see it or not." she smiles brightly finishes the highlights here and there and then turns the sketch around to show Jillian herself through Mattie's eyes. "You see you are beautiful"

"They do, long hours in the offices and everything! I remember when I was young my dad even smiled and laughed when he came home with antlers one time." Jillian giggled at the memory, "I never took many Care of Magical Creatures classes, so I would love to hear how you enjoy them."
She blushed a little at Mattie compliments, petting Morticia some more in an attempt to conceal it. She looks up as the book is turned about and just gapes, her mouth open wide. It takes her a couple of seconds to compose herself, the blush more apparent as she shakes her head. "You are truly amazing, incredible talented." she remarked, not wanting to point out she did not believe herself that good looking in case she insulted the girl. "I think you could do that for a living however you do here at school!"

Mattie laughed. "Antlers? How in the world?" she shakes her head.
"I think that is a plan. Art for money and living and animals for life. Helping them anyway I can. " she said brightly. She signed the bottom of the sketch and pulled it gently from her journal and handed it to Jillian. "Keep it, to remind yourself on days where you think you are not as beautiful as you really are." she smiles brightly.

Jillian smiled brightly, he only answer to the antlers question being "Magic" and a grin.
"I think the hat choose well, hard working and caring." she said softly, taking the sketch and gazing at it admiringly. "Do you think your cousin will object if I put this up in our room?" she asked, unsure what reply she would get as she was uncertain how close the two girls were now. "Thank you so much! If there is anything I can do for you, help with class, an explanation on odd magic stuff or just a chat somewhere quiet. Do let me know."

Mattie grins and hugs Jillian. "I don't think she would mind. I have something to give her as well but I'll get to it when we have time." she looks at the older girl. "Thank you. I'll let you know if I ever do. Just sitting here and talking while sketching you tho was a perfect way to spend some time." she smiles brightly

The hug took Jillian by surprise but after a second she reacts, returning the gesture and smiled as Mattie leans back. "Seeing you certainly has made my walk a lot more enjoyable too," she giggled and then checked that she had not woken Morticia when she moved with the hug, "Its nice to have another friend, I think I'm on a record this year."

Mattie smiled brightly and looked at Morticia as she seemed disturbed. Mattir chuckled softly and look back up to Jillian. "I think this year is my record as well. I only had one friend back home in New York, but she isn't magical so it has been hard to keep in touch with her. Plus I've sent like three letter's and have not received any back. I wonder if she forgot me?" Mattie shrugs it off. "Besides her I met Kiami at camp and Yelena in class. But they are both Slytherin. I do hope we can stay friends though. It will be nice. Plus there is you now and Lili and Dmitry."
Mattie stood back up and looked at Jillian. "Would you like to watch me paint the lake landscape?" she asked.

It is clear by her expression that Jillian has no idea about muggle mail which is why she declines comment about Mattie writing to her friend.
"Yelena is that girl with the scars, right?" she asked, her thoughts going back to her theory on the girl. "You know much about her? I have a few old friends I talk to in both Slytherin and Hufflepuff, don't let the houses prevent you having fun. You must share some classes."
She shift slightly, getting comfortable before making an attempt to comfort the small kitten. Failing that she'll reach for her wand to play with it some more. "I would love to see how the painting turns out." she admitted.

"Yes she is and no not much. We've only talked about classes right now. I'll do my best not to let the houses seperate us. I know if gets harder as time goes on and interests can change with classes."
She picked up her brush again, a dull green yet something sparkled about the shade as she began to work on grass and trees.
"When do we start to pick out what classes we want? Are all core classes stayed the same until Owls?" she asked looking over her shoulder for a moment.

Jillian nodded, smiling at the girls determination and apparent maturity. She watched curiously as Mattie started to paint, as a child she had owned some fairly basic magic paint which changed colour when you tapped at the paper but what Mattie had was possibly something more professional. She supposed she should not have expected otherwise from an Adamson.
"You will get to select some electives when you reach third year, but you can't drop any classes until you finish your OWLs." she explained happily.

Switching brushes she started with a deep dark blue on the lake itself, letting the green on the canvas dry some before adding other greens and some browns and other touches.
The lake was fairly simple for the most part. "What electives are there? Do we get to choose any now? Or only core classes until our third year?"

"Only core classes until your third year. I wouldn't worry about the electives, they seem to change them up all the time." she shrugged, "You already said you aren't interested in ancient runes. Sadly I haven't even been able to take apparition classes yet. I assume you know what apparition is?"

"I hate apparating. It makes me so sick to my stomach. Even after doing it multiple times with my dad and the port keys also! Would be so much easier if there was a teleporting or flying network." she laughs softly and puts the blue brush down as well. The painting needed time to dry.
She sat in the grass and began to clean the paint from her two brushes with a jar of water and a cleaning towel. "Is there a spell to help dry paint or to produce water? Or fire? Or wind? Like elementals?" she asked looking up again.

Jillian shivered at the thought of a flying network and hoped it hadn't been noticed. "I have been apparating side-along since probably before I can walk. Have you never used the floo network?" she asked.
"There are a few spells like that, yea. You'll leave a standard fire making spell this year. There are spells for drying up pools of water, conjuring hot air, creating enough water to help put out fires and all sorts." she was happily in her element describing all this, "One thing you can't do is create food out of nothing though."

"Floo network? What is that?" she asked raising an eyebrow and the noticing the slight shiver. "I guess you never looked forward to Madam Pomfrey's flying lesson's? I'm quite excited to give it a shot." she smiles softly but doesn't laugh. A fear of heights could of been the problem and you don't laugh at people's fear.
"Do you think you could do a small wind one like a blow dryer for the painting? It could help. Otherwise it'll take days to complete as the paint has to dry on each layer. Miss Masters's my art mentor use to do it, but I can't remember the spell she used."

"The floo network is a system of connecting wizard fireplaces together so witches and wizards can use them to travel between each other. You need a speciak powder and you have to speak carefully, but it is easier than apparating and such." Jillian explained and then sighed, she figured Mattie would learn sooner or later so best she get it over with, "I was exempt from those classes actually. I hope you enjoy them though, your father must have told you about Quiddich at least?"
Carefully Jillian, focusing silently for a moment until she could feel what she thought was the right temperature of hot air coming from it before directing it towards the painting. "Glad that worked, I've been practising my nonverbal spells for this year."
