"La canicule est finie," Nikolaus said, his cane lightly tapping along the pavement as they made their way through the park at night. It was the first nice night in a while when he could actually stand to wear a jacket and tie again, and he was sure Rose could use a bit of time to relax. After having found a couple of tourists to feed upon in the underground, the two of them made their way to Saint James's Park, Buckingham Palace still visible from where they were standing. "And there's finally a breeze." He'd have almost welcomed the rain before; of course, it's London, it rains all the damned time. Except, of course, when it was consistently above 25 degrees Celsius for a whole week. Nikolaus and Rose had found a park bench, taking a seat next to her, his cane leaning against the side of the bench. "That man, Duvall. What are the odds that he becomes a problem?" he asked Rose, turning to face her. "I'd like to think we can find a way to better motivate him to find a new appreciation for his work." Almost habitually, Nikolaus scans his surroundings with Auspex. With the Sabbat ever on the doorstep of their territory, even with a truce in place, one can never be too careful. The Pack they had met, at least, seemed to understand its importance, but there was always the chance some neonate looking to make a name for himself could try taking a shot at the only two high-profile Camarilla kindred in the city, and even be dumb enough to attempt it in a public place with one of the most secure buildings in the country if not the continent just a stone's throw away. "I know the type. Jilted over a perceived lack of appreciation. I saw it all the time in the Chantries. C'est typique."

Find a present for Uncle Harry, check. Hangout with Teddy almost. Enjoy before going back to camp, check so far. Victoire had asked to come home for a few days to spend time with family and to try to find something for her Uncle since his birthday was at the end of the month. So far her search turned up no luck nothing caught her eye. Nothing popped out saying Harry Potter to her. She wanted something special nothing boring. He wasn't Gramps where she could find something muggle and give it him where he would be occupied for hours trying to figure out how it worked or its purpose. She had promised to meet up with Teddy, Dom and few other of her older cousins at the Hard Rock Cafe after her attempted shopping mission. Which was why she was dressed like she was, Teddy had mentioned in passing before how he liked when she wore something other than bright. vibrant colors. She still hadn't come clean to him about how she felt. She was hoping that she would do it this weekend but she had chickened out once again. Course she was way early giving up on the shopping trip, she decided to take the way through Saint James, mumbling to herself as she walked, more like giving herself a pep talk so she wouldn't make a complete fool of herself. Usually, she wouldn't be mumbling to herself, more talking in her head. But it was a park with not many people around, so where was the harm? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=224676382

Rose had put on a rather summery and flowery dress for the occasion. Wearing that outfit reminded her of that summer when her parents took her sister Celeste and her to the French Riviera. Those had been the best holidays she'd ever had. She even went the extra mile and put a pair of sun glasses in her hair, even if they were not going to be very useful that late at night. But the main point of a fashion accessory never was to be useful, now was it? " Oui, enfin." She closed her eyes, enjoying the cool night air. It's true that vampires were not as sensitive to heat as mortals but this year's summer had been particularly hot. She let go of Nikolaus' arm and sat on the bench they'd found. The Tremere looked back as he asked about Duvall and smiled, a barely there smile. She'd known their meeting with the Ministry had been on his mind and it was only a matter of time before he'd brought that topic up. But maybe that was for the better, a walk in Saint James' Park at night like that, just the two of them, it was almost too... romantic. "He'll only become a problem if we allow him to be." She said with a shrug. She chuckled softly at what he said next. She knew the type too. "I can already think of several motivations..." Rose interrupted herself mid-sentence and turned towards the direction from which Victoire was coming. A quick use of Auspex made it obvious the person approaching was no Kine or Kindred but a witch or a wizard. ' We have company,' she thought to Nikolaus.

Rose, as usual, looked amazing. It was nice to hear that his perception was correct, though; of course, it usually was. Even before he had Auspex, he was good at reading people. He'd totally take up poker if the Pyramid didn't drown on gambling. He turned to Rose, smirking.
"Then maybe we should find a way to show him that his job can, if he so chooses, come with fringe benef--"
He saw it too. That smirk faded quickly as the blonde witch came into view. She looked roughly the same (physical) age as Rose. Is the Wizarding World that boring, that it's students don't even want to be there when they're off school? he thought to her, eyes narrowing on the witch. I don't suppose you wish to speak with this one, too?

Vic had been walking along still in her head going over things mainly how to surprise Uncle Harry with something interesting for his birthday. Hopefully, dinner with her family would give her some ideas and maybe she could go in with one of them, maybe. If not she would think of something, she always did. While in her head space she did look at her surroundings, she always did like the parks. Spaces of green in the middle of the city. Made her miss the grounds of Hogwarts. Maybe he would like a book on ancient dark arts, nope that would be Hermione. She shook her head slightly. How to think like her Uncle. Hermione was easy maybe because she also liked books.
She noticed that she was coming up on a couple, the woman reminded her of well the women in her family. She almost wanted to ask if she was part Veela herself, but that would be rude. So she gave the couple a small smile and a nod as she walked past them. That was the polite thing to do, civil nod and just go on about your buisness. Simple as that.

Rose shook her head 'no' in answer to Nikolaus' unspoken question. 'Not particularly.' Especially after their talk with Aisha and David about Jillian. Jillian had been actively seeking vampires out and yet had not been ready for what she had found. Better leave that young witch alone. The Tremere Regent was very respectful of the treaty and since this young girl seemed to have no intention of engaging in a conversation with them, why should she? Because she was a witch? Because she looked suspiciously like she was part Veela herself? This was hardly enough a reason to talk to someone you didn't know. Besides, Victoire was most likely another Hogwarts student but she could have been Hufflepuff or Gryffindor for all they knew.
Yet, as luck would have it, on the bench right next to Rose laid a book. A book on ancient dark arts, because Rose always took a book with her wherever she went, unless it was a business appointment. Usually, the book was either French poetry or a treaty about magic, preferably ancient or foreign magic. The way the book was set on the very edge of the bench, Victoire was bound to see it as she walked by. And even if it was a present for Hermione than for Harry, one could never be too early finding a present for one of their favorite relatives, right?

He could hardly blame her for that. Nikolaus' eyes followed Victoire as she passed, but as Rose herself seemed not to show much interest, neither would he. Turning back to Rose, he barely even noticed the book at her side; to the layman it would appear like a well-dressed high school girl with a love of dark fantasy books. To a witch or a wizard...
"It's been a long night. How about we find dinner and go see a late movie?"
First Duvall, then Aisha and David told them about Jillian... damn it, they've earned a night off. And he doesn't mind at all that that could sound like he's asking her on a date.

To ask about the book or not ask, that was the question. Vic had noticed the book sitting on the edge of the bench as she passed. Seemed old and looked interesting something Hermione would like and well if she found out where the book came from that would be one relative down for a present. Not the one she was looking for but she wouldn't have to worry when the time came. She wrestled with herself a little more before turning back to the couple on the bench.
"Umm excuse me?" She motioned to the book, "But your book do you mind if I ask where you got it? Have an Aunt who loves books." There that didn't sound strange or awkward it was a simple polite question. Course who knew what they were, wasn't like witches or wizards walked around carrying billboards. So she just liked to think everyone was Muggle in the beginning.

'Dinner and a late movie?' Rose repeated in her thoughts. That sounded suspiciously like a date, indeed. And yet, that didn't sound like such a bad idea... Until Victoire interrupted Rose's trail of thoughts.
She looked back at the young witch, somewhat surprised that the girl was still there. "Yes?" She enquired, politely.
The Tremere raised a curious eyebrow as she mentioned 'having an aunt who loves books'. She chuckled, softly. "You have an aunt who likes these kinds of books? Really?" She picked up her book from the bench and looked down at it. "Your aunt sounds like the kind of person I would very much like to meet." She paused, pondering something. "Unless I do know her already? London is such a small world, after all."
Rose glanced, at Nikolaus. 'Wouldn't that be amusing if she happened to be related to someone we know at the Ministry? That would make two of them, with Jillian.'
She then turned her attention back to Victoire. "To answer your question, I happen to sell these books. So, if it is indeed what you're looking for, I might be able to help."

Why, yes, it did sound like a date! And just when he thought Rose might be ready to agree (it would have been a flat 'no' otherwise) the witch turned around and began asking about - wait for it - books.
Well, shit. There goes their date.
If Nikolaus needed to breathe, he would have audibly sighed. 'Yes... très drôle, vraiment,' he thought back, the disappointment clearly detectable even through telepathy.
He turned to face Victoire, silent, and suppressing any sort of disappointment that might have been visible in his expression. He forced himself to smile. "It's a shop for the discerning connoisseur of magical grimoires."
A small hint that she didn't need to hide what she was. They knew the moment they laid eyes on her. Auspex truly was a wonderful thing.

Well, now that she knew they knew about magic. That made things easier she hated skirting around the subject. Her way of thinking it was easier to just come out with it but the laws in place were there for a reason so as much as she hated that one rule it was one that she had to follow. Still, if this lady sold books of this type maybe Hermione had already found her shop. It was worth a shot.
She shrugged slightly, "Not sure has Hermione Weasley ever come into your shop? Since I am going to chance a guess and say you're located in Diagon Alley given the subject of your books. Unless you went with the Muggle side of New Age, Wiccan or Pagan whatever they call it type store." She nodded slightly, "Her birthday isn't until September but I might need your help then. Now if you have something for a guy that was surrounded by Dark Arts most of his life, defeated Lord Voldemort that would be even better because everything I thought of seems boring." Shopping for Uncle Harry had her stumped but maybe two new minds might help her think of something.
"Unless I interrupted something, then I don't mind going back to being stumped. Wouldn't want to put anyone out."

Hermione Weasley? Well things just got a lot more interesting, all of a sudden.
"Unfortunately, I can't say she has, though she may know about it since the Ministry of Magic grants all the authorizations related to the opening of new businesses in Knockturn Alley." Rose answered politely, discreetly correcting Victoire regarding the exact location of the shop.
The Tremere studied the young witch with more attention now. The niece of Hermione Weasley and Harry Potter. Who would have thought she'd meet her in a London park at night?
"I'm sure we could find something that would catch the interest of... your uncle, is it?" Not a hard guess, really. "What about a book on wizard chess, for instance?"
Rose stood up, putting her book back in her purse. "We were having a relaxed evening, but it's nothing we can't postpone to another day. We can go now if you want. The bookshop is open all night, after all."
Poor Nikolaus, the Regent could subconsciously sense her right hand's frustration but the opportunity was just too good to pass. She could always make it up to him later.

"We keep hoping she might," Nikolaus replied. Hermione Weasley? That's her aunt?
... okay, he can almost forgive her for robbing him of his date with Rose, if that's the case. He doesn't need Auspex to see the wheels already turning in Rose's head. This was like hitting the lottery. Exactly the kind of student they were hoping to meet, only better. A blood relative. He was still a bit frustrated, but he'll get over it. This was a worthwhile reason to postpone his date.
"We can take either the Circle Line or the District Line from Victoria to Monument," Nikolaus suggested. "It should take roughly one half hour." That would be the quickest Tube route from Saint James to the Leaky Cauldron. Victoire might notice that he's not suggesting they Apparate. That's because, well, they can't, though Nikolaus can do something very similar with the Path of Mercury.

So not Diagon Alley but Knockturn, that was close enough though given the place’s prior reputation she was a little uneasy about going there. Especially with two people she just met. More so after the mention of taking the tube, not that she wasn’t willing to take muggle transportation. She did find it a little interesting especially given the history of how it came about. Just wasn’t what she was used to. She did glance at her watch to check the time, she still had a time before she really had to meet her cousins for dinner. She pushed her second guessing to the side.
“He does like to play chess, so that could work.” She said with a slight nod, though would he read it. She didn’t have the foggiest idea but it was something he hadn’t gotten before. “Yes, Harry is my Uncle. Surprised Aunt Hermione hasn’t come in before if you’re open all night.” Victoire wouldn’t mind a bookshop that was open twenty-four seven.
She looked over at Nikolaus, “That tube is fine.” Course she had only been on it a few times before now, so she wasn’t a master at it or anything. Still she could tick off one more adventure of her list of expanding herself this summer. Professor Oakwood should be pleased once she was back at school. "Though you might want to lead the way since tube travel isn't my first form of transportation."

"Let's go, then. Oh, don't worry. Ce n'est pas sorcier*, as French people say," Rose told Victoire with a small smile. The pun was, of course, fully intended. "It just takes a bit of practice. And getting used to the smell, sometimes."
Rose started to head for the tube station, careful not to make it too hard for Nikolaus to follow then. "Actually, we also have books on other magical games, in case you think he'd be more interested by discovering something new. Some contain beautiful illustrations." The Tremere was getting the vibe that Mr. Harry Potter, contrarily to his friend Hermione Granger-Weasley, didn't read much. But that only made finding the book he would read even more of an interesting challenge for the book shop owner.
*A/N: The idiom means 'it's easy, but Rose plays on the fact that the word 'sorcier' means wizard: It doesn't take a wizard to do it..

Nikolaus smirked at Rose's pun, curious if Victoire would understand it. Getting to his feet, he reached for his cane, and smoothed out his suit. "Shall we, then?" he asked rhetorically, following behind Rose toward the tube station. "Don't worry, we can pay for you if you don't have muggle money," he said to Victoire over his shoulder. He was aware that few witches or wizards carried muggle money, much less a card for the tube. They generally had no use for either, whereas for Rose and Nikolaus, they carried both on them at all times. It's not like they had much fear of being mugged; anyone who was willing to try had a death wish.
He was used to going up and down stairs with his cane, but he appreciated Rose being careful for his sake. "I enjoyed reading a book on the history of Quidditch, myself," Nikolaus commented as Rose talked about books on other magical games. Hey, it was a sport, but it still counted. And ever since coming to the Wizarding World, Nikolaus has found Quidditch to be such a fun game to watch, even if he rarely got to attend one, and not just because few matches started at night.

Victoire smiled at the idiom, it sounded something like her gramps would say. She nodded slightly, "Nope it doesn't and as my gramps would say, Muggles are just fascinating." And they were with all that they thought up without a wand, she couldn't understand why some were still stick in their backwards thinking. Considering there had been a war not too long ago. Vic tried to carry Muggle money with her while she was away from her world. It was just logic in her mind to help blend in. "Thank you." She told Nikolaus with a slight smile, not that he would be able to see it. "If anything this might make a good entry in my journal." added absent mindedly.
She considered Rose's idea, "That might be a little better, Uncle Harry does like his sports." And she had a feeling Rose might like to find a book for him. Maybe between the two of them, they could think of something. "Quidditch is fun, my uncles and aunt played for the house team. Aunt Ginny played professionally for a while now she works for the Prophet." And since she hadn't placed them both as non-magical yet. She added, "Maybe you could come to my Gramps and Gran's the family usually gets together to play each other most of the time. Not the same as official matches but it can be just as entertaining."

Rose did not take offense to be told that she used idioms Victoire's grandparents' used. She was, most likely, older than them. 'Fascinating' would however not have been the world she'd have used to describe muggles. Unless it was sarcastic, of course. They were creative and resourceful, the Tremere had to give them that. Still, more often than not, they were arrogant, reckless and foolish.
"Your journal?" Rose inquired, politely. "Is it some sort of summer assignment? Or do you mean a diary you write for your eyes only?"
The Tremere Regent nodded and her next words only confirmed what the young witch had guessed. Rose was determined to find great presents for Victoire's aunt and uncle. "Very well, we'll look at those books as soon as we get there. And, even if none of those catches your eye, I have no doubt we'll end up finding the perfect gift."
The sudden invitation surprised Rose. "I'm afraid neither of us actually plays Quidditch." The first reason for that being that neither Rose nor Nikolaus could actually ride a broom. "That said... I am certain it'd be most entertaining to watch. Isn't it some kind of family gathering, though?"

Nikolaus made little reaction to mention of a 'journal,' or Rose allegedly using an idiom that Victoire's grandparents used. It was true; Rose was probably older than her great-grandparents. As they approached the stairs leading to the tube station, Nikolaus reached into the interior breast pocket of his suit, and withdrew his wallet.
It was then that Victoire had said the magic word. Nikolaus froze, and turned to face her directly, wondering if he'd heard her right. She was inviting them? To watch Quidditch? With her family?
'Quelle chance nous avons!' Nikolaus thought to Rose. It was incredibly difficult not to blurt out an acceptance to such an offer, knowing it was Rose's place and not his, and her question, albeit necessary, only made it harder for him to wait.

"It's something I have just started, really for my eyes only. Had a professor give me two challenges last year so this is just another way of keeping my information straight and gives me proof that I have added a little more fun in my life other than just books and studying." Which reminded her, she needed to add more to her Fae list. "Two heads are better than one sometimes, so I don't doubt we will find something." Merlin knew she could use the extra help. And she was branching out by getting added help instead of doing it herself. Another new thing to add for her summer entry.
Vic nodded slightly as she checked the money she had in her bag, "It is but I don't think Gramps and Gran would mind if I told them I invited some people to come watch. Hermione doesn't play, Uncle Harry said that was the one thing she had trouble with in school. If I remember right. So no worries about not playing." Broom riding wasn't a standard requirement for magical people. At least in her opinion anyway, she liked flying herself but she liked books better. Which was probably why she was usually a stand in when it came to the family game. Bench warmer is what she had learned from listening to muggles. So she was alright with that for herself. And as her younger cousin, Rose would tease. She would probably get hurt by just watching Teddy than what was going on.

"They gave you challenges?" That was the kind of teachers that had always been to Rose’s liking. "What kind if I may ask?" The Tremere studied Victoire quietly. She could be the same age as Jillian or one year younger or older. She was a lot more soft spoken and less passionate, on the surface at least. "What year will you be in next September?" No need to ask what school she attended given her family background. And the way she took about books, she was definitely a Ravenclaw. Rose glances back at Nikolaus, "Three heads, even." The Tremere Regent wondered if it wouldn’t be too premature to accept an invitation like this but she could feel Nikolaus’ excitement without even using Auspex. It was radiating from him. But then again, he was a Quidditch fan through and through. So, she turned to Victoire and said, with a nod. "Well, in that case, I see no reason to decline such a nice invitation." When Nikolaus used telepathy to talk to her, she smirked slightly before replying the same way. 'If the invitation still stands after she finds out we’re Kindred, then we’ll really be lucky.' That was a pretty big 'if', even if Hermione Granger-Weasly was considered pretty open-minded on the subject. Also, that would mean they would agree to postpone their family game until after sunset. -------- (To be continued here.)
