@rosebelmont @nikolaus
You pull up just down the road from the murder scene. There are still two squad cars here, parked outside, and the street front roped off with police tape. You can see just down a little way is your ghoul's car. You guess he's likely inside somewhere.
Two uniformed officers lean against the nearest car, smoking, clearly first line of defence from the two tired looking reporters huddled around their coffees across the street.

Before getting out of the car, Nikolaus sent a brief text message to Inspector Barnaby, MIT. He knew they weren't going to get around those uniformed officers without his help. Sighing, Nikolas turned to Rose, and reached for his cane. "Shall we?" he said, and opened the door, locking it and setting the alarm with the remote control on the keys once she's out as well. He offered her his arm again, and headed towards the crime scene tape. Hopefully, Barnaby would be coming out as soon as he got the text message. He didn't care how he did it; with the fake Europol credentials he'd said he'd forged, or if he'd just say he called in a couple of experts from the museum to take a look at the runes. If they were indeed Thaumaturgic, he and Rose would need to lie about their origins, and possibly even Dominate the officers. He'd rather this go more simply than that, of course. "The vultures are already here," he said quietly to Rose, ignoring the reporters. When they got to the crime scene tape, he stopped, waiting for Barnaby to get them passed the police tape.

As Nikolaus and Rose approach, Barnaby does indeed come out of the building, and outside the tape, approaching as if Nikolaus and Rose were colleagues. He shakes hands first with Nikolaus, then Rose.
"Thank you so much for coming. I know it's late, but we'd dearly like this cleaned up before dawn."
As he shakes their hands, he palms them their ID badges. They look. Interpol. Excellent.
"Please, come on through. Your office said you had some expertise in this regard, which makes it so lucky for us you are here."
Barnaby nods to the two officers as they pass. The two are too bored to take more notice than necessary. Clearly their boss is OK wiith these two, so they are too. The press, though, are interested, and come running, and the two then take action to keep them back and outside the tapes.
As they walk into the store, the first thing of note is the newspapers taped to the front windows, and the dust and renovation debris on the floor ..l except for the circle in the middle. It's been well swept, almost polished, before the blood circle was drawn out, the body still lies within the circle, though has been covered. Five thick black candles sit, one at each point of the pentagram. There are two other officers in here.
"OK, chaps, out. Let the experts do what they can to help without breathing down their necks." And they grumble, but leave, and Barnaby well back.

Rose barely shakes Barnaby's hand, though she mutters: "Courteous as always, Inspector Barnaby," her own back-handed way of showing him just what she thinks of him shaking Nikolaus' hand first. Hopefully he has no ambition of ever becoming anything more than a ghoul among the Tremere. She still follows him to the center of the crime scene where the covered body lays in the center of a blood pentagram, ignoring the other officers and the press all the same. She crouches gracefully just outside the circle, examining the drawing. Sure, some Thaumaturgy rituals do use pentagrams but the presence of this body in the middle is... unsettling. Also, the pentagram had not been burned into the ground and then covered in the blood of the victim like the Regent would have expected. It seemed to have been simply drawn out. And, black candles? That seems to belong more to witchcraft than to Blood Magic. Rose thinks to Nikolaus. ' Something doesn't add up. I'm going to try and figure out what happened here. Make sure to cover my voice as I recite the incantation.

How he wish he knew this one. This ritual was one of Rose's favorites, and he still clung to hope that one day, she'd teach it to him. To be able to see what she's able to see what she sees... And he would have very much like to watch her perform it but he knew that wasn't what was expected of him.
Distraction time.
Nikolaus looked down at the body. No way he was killed here. Dismemberment is messy. Too messy to draw such a pretty pentagram, and not have the place look like a slaughterhouse. Whoever did this was meticulous; magic or not, it was almost artistic. He starts taking a few pictures with his phone. Then, he passes it on to Rose so that she could pretend to look at it as she focused and that any sound she'd make could be blamed on Siri.
He turned back to Barnaby. "What did the coroner say? What's the approximate time of death? When did the call come in?" If it was during daylight hours, that would all but rule out kindred. As he spoke, he stared at the spot when the journalists were trying to sneak a peek at the crime scene. Visibly irritated, he stomped he cane on the ground and exclaimed in a rather loud voice. "That's the third time this one threatens to tear the tape. Don't you see?" he said to the officers guarding it."Is it at least possible to work in peace?" The more attention he'd get, the less Rose would.

Rose conducts her ritual. What is revealed to her is both curious and worrying.
Two men enter the room. One is the victim, the other wears a mask. The victim seems to be under some sort of enchantment. He other man holds a wand. A wizard? He waves the wand, and the floor is magically swept clean. He forces the man to his knees. He sets out the candles, lighting them with his wand. Blood flows from seemingly nowhere as the victim collapses and the circle is created. He then takes a moment to physically cut out the heart, using the blood within to paint runes into the circle. Some are thaumaturgical, but the order doesn't seem quite right. He chants an incantation that seems very familiar, but again not quite right. Like there's been a mix up somewhere. But he seems satisfied with his work, though nothing seems to have been achieved. Another flick of his wand, and the victim becomes unrecognisable. Then the man is simply gone.
Rose shakes herself out of the vision. Then she has an epiphany. The ritual, half thamauturgy, though fraudulent, hid something else, something magical. She realises that, just as she looked back to see who did this, they - whoever they are - are now watching her and Nikolaus.

Rose took a deep breath as she shook herself out of the vision. It was a great ritual and one of her favorites indeed, but it did take a lot from the caster, especially when the vision was as unsettling and preoccupying as this one.
She immediately thought to Nikolaus. 'The one who did that... a man wearing a mask... he had... a wand.' Even as she used Auspex, the Tremere sounded like she was somewhat out of breath. 'He has some thaumaturgical knowledge...' That part was thought with a mix of disgust and annoyance. 'But not enough to do it right, just to pretend that's what he's doing. The runes, the incantation... I know them but... I can't recall. It's like he's mixing several rituals or spells together.' A mix of Thaumaturgy and witchcraft maybe? Just like the runes and the black candles that had nothing to do with each other.
The Tremere paused trying to gather her thoughts. 'He used his wand... except to remove the victim's heart. And he... made sure no one would be able to identify the victim.' Though Rose would know be able to, since she saw the scene from the beginning.
Rose paused again and she started looking around, searching for something or someone. She couldn't shake that unpleasant feeling creeping up her spine, the feeling of being observed. 'He's not there but he's watching. Some kind of magical surveillance spell. I feel his eye on me... don't you feel it too?'
Was it the real purpose behind this messy ritual then, being able to see who would come? Did he make it look like Thaumaturgy because it was bound to attract Tremere to the crime scene? Did they just fall into a trap or was she reading too much into this?
Whatever the case, she hoped the masked man enjoyed mirrors because he was about to get trapped into one very soon and for a very long time. Maybe Quentin Duvall would find a spot for it on its wall.

'A wand?' he thought back. A wizard...? Well, that was unexpected. But the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. He'd never seen Thaumaturgy quite like this, and those candles... it almost looked like someone who was trying to perform Thaumaturgy, and either didn't know what he was doing, or maybe was even experimenting. Or were they trying to throw someone off of their trail, perhaps by disguising some other form of magic as Thaumaturgy?
One thing was certain; the victim was not a vampire, and if he was, his blood was so thin as to not become ash when he died, meaning his vitae would be basically worthless for Thaumaturgy. But maybe there was something else?
Nikolaus' eyes narrow once more, this time focusing on the candles. Maybe he'd be able to gain some insight on the ritual performed? He wasn't as knowledgeable as Rose was on the matter of kine magic, but she was busy with something else. But then, he heard her next thought. They were being watched?
Nikolaus froze for a second after (hopefully) gaining the 'psychic snapshot' he wanted from Auspex. 'How do you want to play this?' he thought back. 'If he's a wizard, he's the Aurors' problem, not ours. But if he has Thaumaturgical knowledge...' He leaves the rest of the thought unsaid. It's not as if he needs to tell his Regent what the Pyramid would expect of them.

Thencandles are thick and only black on the outside. The inside appears to be some natural tallow. When Nikolaus touches one, he can feel the wizard who handled them. He gets an image of the wizard, of bright blue eyes, long dark hair, but no features, they're hidden by the mask. A name, Max. And two gold teeth.
It does appear that the wizard(?) had at least an observational knowledge of thaumaturgy. He'd at least seen some practiced to get an idea of procedure, runes, etc. And then mixed it up, either deliberately, or just not knowing what he was doing.
Barnaby starts to fidget over by the door. You're taking a long while. He glances over, then looks away again.

Rose looked towards Nikolaus as he used Auspex. She tilted her head, curious to know if he could sense anything worth mentioning. The Spirit's Touch is known to be a little bit random in terms of the quality of the results depending on how long the objects have been handled and of the residual spiritual energy left.
'So?' She thought to him. 'Did you see his face?'
She eyed Barnaby fidgeting by the door. They couldn’t spend much longer here without it getting suspicious. She turned back to the other Tremere. 'We’ll decide of our course of action later. Let’s get out of here before your ghoul loses the rest of his countenance.'
With one last look towards the crime scene, Rose started walking to the door. After a moment, she used telepathy one more time, like some kind of afterthought. 'The blood the wizard use… if he did pull it from the victim, he used a similar technique to the one you sometime use to feed. It could have been a spell, though.' But all those coincidences and similarities were really starting to bother the Tremere Regent.

' Not enough to make a positive ID, but it's enough to ask some questions,' he thought back. ' He must like that mask. But I have his eyes, his hair, even a first name.' It was then that he noticed his ghoul. Rose was right; time to go. "We're done here, Inspector," he said, intentionally making his accent sound even more German, instead of the German/French mix typical of Alsace. "Would you be so kind as to walk us to our car?" He did, after all, earn his blood for the month. As they'd walk, he turned to the journalists. "No comment," he'd say pre-emptively. "Interpol does not comment on ongoing investigations. Wait for the London Metro Police's press conference." He casts a sideways glance to Rose, giving her a polite smile. ' They've overstayed their welcome, no? Please let me take care of this.' he thought to her, before turning to the taller of the two journalists, the one who seemed in charge, making eye contact with him from behind the tape. "Show's over. Leave." He then quickly turned to the other one. "You too, leave." Emphasizing the word 'leave' as his Command, he motions for Barnaby to follow him. Hopefully, he's smart enough to tell the other two cops to stay behind. He's not getting his blood, otherwise.

Barnaby nods to Nikolaus, his eyes ever hungry. "Sure. Sir." He indicates for them to precede them and walks out with them past the waiting officers.
The reporters aren't too hard to deal with. The guy looks hungry for anything you can give him, so when Nikolaus speaks he is all ears. He just nods and packs up his gear and walks away. The woman seems more resistant to his Command. She blinks, nods, and starts to pack her gear.
Barnaby happily follows, having motioned the others to go back to guarding the scene. They stop at the car. He looks edgy, like an addict readying for a fix, and hoping he's done enough to earn it.

'What's his name, then?' Rose asked, somewhat impatiently. Because the rest, she'd seen too. Although she could use a confirmation on the eye color too, but well, the name was a much more interesting piece of information.
Rose nodded as Nikolaus indicated he'd be taking care of the journalists. Honestly, she could care less about those. She headed out and to their car without waiting on the two men she knew would be following her. Then, she got in the car and started writing everything they'd seen or heard in her notebook for later use.
She knew Barnaby would be expecting his 'reward' but he was Nikolaus' ghoul. So, it was his business, not hers. Hopefully, it wouldn't take too long. She had a lot of research to do as soon as they'd be back to the Chantry.

'Max', he thought back, with almost audible scoff even over telepathy. Not the most intimidating of names, to say the least. Nikolaus was pretty sure the guy who does his dry-cleaning was named Max, too.
With the journalists packing up, Nikolaus would open Rose's door at the front passenger side of the car. Then, he would open the back seat door next, and climb in, waiting for Barnaby to get in next to him. The windows were tinted black; nigh-impossible to see through at night, at least without some seriously heavy duty lights. When Barnaby got in, Nikolaus would begin rolling up the sleeve of his suit jacket, and then undoing his silver, pyramid-shaped cufflink. "It's not vampire activity," Nikolaus said bluntly. "Whoever did that wasn't one of us, but we believe it was still supernatural activity. You might get a visit from somebody else in the future, but rest assured, it will be quite painless."'
Nikolaus then bit into his own wrist, blood immediately pooling around the two fang marks. He then held it out to Barnaby. "Tell the press you're suspecting a Satanic cult. Probably just kids who read one too many Stephen King novels."

Barnaby kissed Nikolaus' palm before bending to drink. It's clear his addiction is still strong, and that he really needed this badly. As is probably normal, he only stops when Nikolaus forces the issue.
"It will be done. I'll let you know if anything similar comes up."
In the rear vision mirror, Rose can see that the female reporter seems to have shaken off Nikolaus' command, and is approaching the car.

As she finished her second page of notes, Rose noticed the female reporter heading in their direction. She rolled her eyes and thought to Nikolaus: 'I thought you said you were taking care of that.'
Without turning back to them, she said out loud. "Time to practice what you were preached, Inspector Barnaby. One of the journalists is coming back this way. Please be so kind as to deal with her." The 'before I decide to go and deal with her myself' was left unsaid but the Regent had no doubt that the inspector would hear it loud and clear.
Although he was Nikolaus' ghoul, he knew better than questioning Rose's requests.

"Wha--" he actually said it out loud, just as Barnaby finished feeding. Nikolaus looked into the rear view mirror, and grit his teeth. 'I did!' he thought back in protest, hastily licking his fang marks closed.
When he finished, he nodded toward the approaching journalist. "You heard her. Lose the vulture," he said, unrolling his suit jacket's sleeve and pocketing the cufflink. He'd fix that later. "And make sure your breath doesn't smell of blood when you talk to her."
Despite the patronizing tone, Nikolaus knew Barnaby was always careful about not smearing any blood as he fed. As addicted as he might be, he was a sensible man. He knew all about the consequences of breaking the Masquerade and he wouldn't risk compromising his career.

Barnaby nodded, getting out of the car and moving to head off the reporter, calling over two uniforms as he walked. She wasn't happy to be escorted away, nor to have her credentials checked, and double checked. Rose and Nikolaus were free and clear, but Rose could see in the rear view mirror the flare the reporter gave, and that she was writing notes as they drove away.

Barnaby was gone and as Nikolaus started the engine, Rose observed the reporter. She was really putting up a fight now, wasn’t she?
She closed her note book and said out loud, her eyes never leaving the rearview mirror. "That journalist, I saw Barnaby check her credentials." Twice. "I’d like for you to ask your ghoul to do a little research for me. I want to know where she works and where she lives."
Simple commands might not work on that woman but it didn't mean she couldn't be conditioned over time. The Tremere Regent had yet to meet a kine who couldn't. Maybe it was time they had their own private informant among the London Press.

Nikolaus was in the driver's seat of the car in no time at all, turning the keys in the ignition. He stifled a smirk as he pulled off into the street, turning into a side street to avoid traffic on the way back to the Leaky Cauldron. "A journalist?" He asked, before scoffing. "At least she's not a politician, I guess."
He'd send the text first thing when they got back to the Chantry. Cell service in Knockturn Alley sucked, but that's what their SchreckNet-equipped WiFi was for.
Whether she was planning on ghouling her, dominating her, or just blackmailing or otherwise coercing her, he didn't want to be her. She had made sure Rose would notice her. ...Be careful what you wish for.
