Thulile had set up for her and Matilda to have their little lesson out in the woods today. Finding a place a little bit off to give them privacy without being too far away that they wouldn't be found with relative ease. There were no easels today, just pencils, charcoals and sketchbooks. Then a few snacks for them to munch on throughout the time they were together. It was far too easy for them both to become lost in their art, and Thulile didn't want to run the chance of missing a meal without having something that could supplement.
For this Thulile had a picnic blanket spread out on the ground and sat with her legs crossed. Smiling as Matilda arrived. Thulile patted the space next to her, feeling an urge to smother the girl with affection and closeness. Needing to comfort her during this very difficult time.
"Hey there, girlie. I figured today we keep it nice and easy. Sketch and chat some. I'd also like to see what you've been sketching lately on your own."

Matilda had a smile on her face as she met Ms. Masters's out in the woods. She sat on the blanket, Morticia had stayed behind with Gomez and Kiami today and that was fine with her. She pulled out her sketch book and looked at Ms. Masters's, her eyes a bit worried. She wanted her to see what she was doing and work with her on it but at the same time she didn't want to be chastised for the difference in her art as of late.
She knew why it was different, she was drawing her dreams, the things that had happened and her emotions. She handed the woman her sketch book just a tad on uneasy about it.
After the pictures of the camp bonfire, several more of Kiami, Gomez and Mortica were sketched in. The next page was of Lili and then one of Dmitry with a heart on it that said brother. She liked that one. After that though, they became darker, different for an 11 year old. Filled with black shades and blots of white spots, mazes filled several pages. The first was a figure in the center, much like her painting. The next one were several people and to Matilda they looked like they were all searching for each other but never finding anyone. Then there was one that had a figure in the center but it was blacked out in red shades, as if to be bleeding and dead. The next was of the hospital room, where Dristan slept, covered with things all around. The last one showed a car wrecked and mangled, a body hanging out, darkness surrounding it, as if the maze was just starting out.

Thulile took the sketchbook, but then reached out to smooth a hand down over Matilda's hair. She gave the girl a warm smile. "Don't look so worried, sweetheart."
Opening the sketchbook Thulile began to look through the images. Smiling and commenting on them here and there. She liked them as they were very much the girl Thulile had come to know. The one with the boy, Dmitry in it calling him brother made thulile smile even more widely. After that, though, the theme shanged. Thulile's expression changed and she didn't make comments as she focused on the pictures. Her mind easily shifting as she searched within them to find their meanings. Fingers tracing the lines and shadows. Her heart twisting up tightly at the images of Dristan and the car. At the end Thulile turned back to the first of the dark ones and then pulled Matilda in close to her side.
"These last pictures... will you tell me their stories?"

Matilda nodded her head as Ms. Masters, smoothed her hair down. She wasn't sure what to say in the moment but her heart was beating faster. The comments about the pictures before the darker ones made her smile but she was still nervous. She watched as Ms. Masters had a facial change, she stopped talking, and Matilda started to fidget with her fingers.
When Thulile pulled her closer, she bit her bottom lip. "Um, well. It is about Dad and his accident. The other ones, are nightmares I have been having. The first one I painted onto a canvas the other day." She was nervous as she spoke, her voice was shaky and low. "Mom, well she said that dad was lost in a maze and that was what I saw." She said as she pointed to the picture.

Thulile gave a little nod as Matilda began to talk and then tilted her head over to rest on top of the girl's. Sitting there, giving Matilda all of her attention.
"These pictures from your nightmares... will you tell me how you felt drawing them? Do you remember what was happening in them?" The fact MAtilda was having nightmares worried Thulile, and she wanted to ask about it, fully intending on extending the conversation further into each grouping of pictures.

Matilda leaned against her and a steady shaking breath escaping. "I was scared. Afraid. This one." She pointed to the first one. "Was the first one. Mom said he was in a maze and he had to find his way out. The lights are people in his life, but they don't seem to reach him and he stays lost. People don't always come out of comas." She wiped a tear away.
"That one," She pointed to the other one, the one with the red x on it. "That one, is him dying in the coma and never coming out." She started to cry, soft quiet tears. "It hurts, but I couldn't talk about it." She sniffled and wiped her nose. "That one." She pointed to the one with several figures in it. "That is Mom, me and Dmitry looking for him in the maze, but it is a maze. You can't always find your way out of one." She sighed and wiped the tears away again looking up at her.

When Thulile saw the tears she reached over and used her thumb to brush them away as well. This poor girl.
"A maze... it is like a labyrinth. Twisting and turning... But, you know. Dristan, he's so smart. And he has so much love in him. So much to live for," Thulile said as she stopped on the image of everyone wondering lost, looking for him. "A wonderful person so full of life... I do not see him staying lost forever. Especially if, instead of wandering blindly looking for him... we all stay stationary and call out to him. Call for him without voices and out hearts. Reach for his soul and let it guide him back."

Matilda listened and looked up at Ms. Masters's as she spoke. She had never thought about it like that before and she was thinking about it deeply.
"Is it possible? Can we do that? Aunt Mary, Dad's sister and Mom and Lili and even Dmitry all keep telling me that we can't do that. That we can't enter the maze to help him. I want to though. Aunt Mary said they are looking for someone with the ability to use telepathy to at least reach inside. Could someone put us all there? With the magic? Can it be used to help him find his way out?"
She had hope again in her eyes as she seemed to come back to life. She couldn't think straight at the moment her mind was wheeling into a million different directions as she thought about the possibilities of being able to possibly do something like this. Maybe there was more to magic and everyone was ignoring her because of her age? She was young and new to this world. Her of all people didn't really know hardly anything no matter how many books she read in Dristan's library. She wasn't being patient and everyone kept telling her to be just that. But she was just a kid, scared, afraid, lonely and not wanting to be left again.

Thulile was quiet a moment as she thought on how to explain further what she had said. "Magic isn't everything," she began with.
"The mind is a complicated thing with many depths and wonders yet to discover. What I speak of ties in more with Faith. Something even muggles have, as well as willpower and passion. Of the mind's ability to see and recognize things and piece millions of things together to form a picture and impression. Visiting him, talking to him. Letting him hear your voice even as he is in a coma. Faith in him. And just... thinking and pushing your energy out there, like you would when praying for something very hard? Things like that. These are the things that we can do. Yes, a telepath would be great, but these things... these are the things we can do."

Matilda let out another sigh. "I guess. I never really prayed though to be honest. No reason to. I stopped doing that a long time ago. Stopped having that kind of hope after many years. I guess though, they were answered just not in my time way back when, seeing as I am getting a family now." She looks over at the snacks and picks up a juice box and opens it taking a sip.
"Do you have faith? Like do you pray to God? I mean I have faith in family somewhat but I am still learning. If I had better faith in God though, he wouldn't have allowed me to be left alone on a firehouse step to begin with. He would of let my parents raise me. Some day I will go looking for them. Regardless of how Dristan and Teagan take me in. Shove it in there faces that someone loved me enough and then ask them why they didn't. But that is years from now."
She looked at the sketch book and sighed over the pictures. "I guess I shouldn't be so afraid. I just, I don't know how to accept that nothing can be done. But it is like before I knew magic excited, doctors can only do so much." She had to stick with that conclusion because in the end it seemed like everything was now resting with the fact that Dristan had to figure out himself how to get awake. She had to come with the terms that his own body had to heal in ways she couldn't understand.

"I have faith, though more in the lines of basic spiritualism. Faith in a higher power beyond our comprehension. Faith in the good things and humanity. Faith that there will always be a light in the darkness," Thulile mused in a soft voice as she looked out into the wooded area around them.
"I do pray, in a way. When I was a kid I would call them my wishes, but they were one and the same with prayers. Projecting my will, passion, and desires out into the universe. And then I found art, and I started doing it that was as well. Back in my street art days... I did it so often. Little murals and images on the side of buildings that bore my greatest hopes and dreams for the entire city to see... That was my way of it." Thulile then smiled and gave Matilda a one armed hug. "I think you'll find your one way of doing it too, however that may be if the basic prayer things don't suit you."
Thulile didn't take up the topic of Matilda's birth parents, knowing it was youthful anger. That as she grew her opinions and desires would alter as well. There had been a time Thulile had felt much the same about her father. Now? Thulile was content to let the man forever stay anonymous.
"No no. Never say you shouldn't be afraid. You have every right to feel the things you do, even fear. You are within your rights to be afraid of what is happening. Only, don't let that fear make you give up hope. Hope is the one amazing quality, the best gift Humanity has. Hope, and Faith. Faith in yourself, in the people around you. Faith that your voice will help to lead Dristan home. Faith that Dristan will come back to you."

"I think I have faith in the higher power. I never really thought about it before to be honest. I mean I have faith that he is strong, I just don't know much about medicine to be able to have faith that it can help all the time. I also have hope in many things. I am always looking at things with a smile and like hoping things turn out for the better. I just wasn't expecting that he would get hurt like that. It really shook me." She says quietly as she listens to Ms. Masters's speak more.
She sips the juice box again. "I mean, as far as the fear goes, I can try not to let it take a hold. I am not sure how to do that though. It is scary and I am afraid, I just, I guess have to trust that the adults know what to do and that they are going to do everything they can for him." She said after she sipped her juice.
She wasn't sure what else to say on the matter either. "Maybe I can visit him again for a few hours and talk about camp and stuff then this weekend? I know I was there just a few days ago and going back and forth can be a struggle, not to mention the port key thing makes my stomach turn. I don't like it." She chuckled softly.

Thulile gave a nod of her head. It was easy to understand what Matilda meant. Even as an adult thulile herself didn't have much knowledge with the medical arts or healing practices. It simply hadn't been her calling. She could understand, though, how the lack of knowing might make hope hard to hold onto.
As Matilda spoke on Thulile nodded her head, understanding what Matilda meant as she went on even further. "The port keys are rather upsetting, you never really get used to them," she said with a grimace. "But I think that would be good. Definitely visit him as much as your able, I don't see how there could be any harm in that. And if you ever need me at all, always remember that I'm here." Leaning over Thulile pressed a kiss to the top of Matilda's head.

She turned and wrapped Ms. Masters into a big hug. "Thank you for talking with me. I know it seems like I am all wrapped up around this. I should be a kid and let the adults handle it. It is what I keep hearing, but when my fate seems to be tied into all of it. It is hard. I don't want to end up back in the system after finally a place where I could belong."
"Should we draw something nicer then? Maybe about all off us standing in the maze, with each of having our own light? Pushing the darkness out? I think it is a good idea." She smiled at her.

"I'm always here for you, sweetheart. Promise. You're successfully wiggling yourself right into my heart," Thulile said with a smile, her free hand coming up to rest over her heart. "And it's ok to worry. I understand. Adults can say that, because they don't want you carrying the weight of the world around with you. But I know you still will worry. But that's why you got me, right? And even if you have to go back into the system, I'll never stop being there for you. Hell, I'll try to move heaven and earth to find you a good home. Alright?"
"You know, that sounds just perfect."

"Alright." Said Matilda with a bright smile. She pulled out a few things from her stuff and grabbed a pencil to start drawing outlines for what she wanted.
"I think this will be better." She said.

"Alright, let's do that." Thulile said with a smile.
Leaning over, Thulile was content to watch and comment as the girl drew. "I think it will be just as perfect as the other. Remember, putting even your dark feelings onto paper is perfection and an expression of self. Don't ever let someone tell you it's wrong to. But now that you have, yes. Let's bring light into that darkness." Thulile grinned, wanting to show Matilda her complete acceptance in this. It was her little promise. She'd look after Matilda for Dristan and Teagan while the girl was at camp.

Matilda smiled. "Yes, It think you are right. I told that to Aunt Agatha the other day when I got sick from the sun. She asked if I wanted to burn the painting I did based of that first sketch I drew. I didn't want to though. She took and it and put it up in the office. I think it disturbs some of the other kids and even Ms. Redthistle. Maybe you could take it to your place and hold it for me that way no one is bothered by it. And this one when I finish with it? I don't want to put anyone off with what has been going on with me. You know?"
She was concerned how the other kids would take the fact that she had painted it, she knew the one girl, whose name she didn't quite catch was put off and nervous about it and it bothered it when Aunt Agatha wanted to know if Matilda wanted to burn it. She was glad she didn't go with that route. With the outlines drawn she began to paint the black into the picture, this time only in the walls and not surrounding him as much.

"If that is what you want, then I will happily take it." Thulile said with all honesty. "I will take it and keep it safe because it is a piece of you and you should never be ashamed of it. If you want it kept then it should be." Reaching over she gave Matilda a half hug.
"But I understand. Some people look at things and feel differently. So pieces like these might be too difficult for others to acknowledge. I mean, so often we're all trying to suppress parts of ourselves. Deny our fears. Not everyone is able to bring those out and essentially bare their souls for all to see. So when they see someone else doing so, by art or music, or any other means, they can feel awkward by it. Since it's something they can't do." That was something Thulile herself had to deal with when she was younger. Making her art with the brash honesty of a child not yet taught to suppress all those things inside.

Matilda was painting and listening as Ms. Masters's spoke to her about the painting. "I guess I can understand that." She said as she moved on to the next portion. She was determined to finish this new painting. "Can you take this one with you as well? Together it seems that they could tell a story. Maybe someday I can show Dad without him becoming upset. I just hope he wakes soon."
She sighed softly and focused on the painting so she wouldn't have to worry about her mind wandering again.

"Of course. I would love to." Thulile said. She would love to take any art Matilda wanted her to take and would proudly display it in her little flat. How could she not want to show off the artwork of the one little girl she was teaching? There would forever be pride there for Matilda. That she got to help and touch that girl's life in any way. That she was gifted that.
Sitting with Matilda as she worked was something Thulile found she enjoyed doing. Watching as the creativity of another took place and chatting all the while. Snacking on the food she had brought out for them. The time seemed to fly by, and all too soon they were packing up their little outdoor class and picnic. Walking back with Matilda and promising she would take care of the paintings the girl had done before taking the other also into her possession. It was with a bear hug that Thulile left Matilda, hoping that their talk would leave Matilda in higher hopes than before.
