When the sun set, Mary didn't even bother moving. She lay on her bed, staring into the darkness at the ceiling behind.
She was weary. Exhausted. Not hungry, she'd fed before she slept. Fed deeply. But she was still drained.
Their little sting, catching the man who had been trailing Dristan and aliliana, had taken more from her than she had admitted. By the time she had collapsed into bed as the sun was rising, it was all she could do to stand. If it hadn't been for Balthazar's assistance, she wouldn't have made it.
She could feel his cool for, lying along her legs beside her. Normally he returned to the Abyss while she slept, but it seems not today. He'd kept her company, clearly concerned for her wellbeing.
I don't feel that much better, honestly, she thought to herself. It was going to take a while for her to recover her strength. She liked to use the Abyss to travel, but it did drain her. So much in one night ... she hadn't imagined it would take this toll.
She shut her eyes again, reached down to touch Balthazar. The shadow moved against her, purring like a cat, licking her hand.
Instead of getting up, Mary let herself drift back to sleep.
Hopefully no one will need me tonight, she thought. I really don't want to face the world today.
