Mary had opened the classroom to revision, leading up to exams. Though she didn't have many students, she aimed to make her subject as fun as possible.
She had brought in some Muggle history books, and an assortment of Muggle items like ballpoint pens, and other non-tech.
Because she had to divide her time between this class and DADA, she was in and out of both classrooms, stepping between shadows now and then to keep tabs on students and their questions.

Jillian wanders into the room, blue tinted goggles atop her head as usual. Her expression seemed to brighten as she spotted the array of muggle implements and devices, clearly curious she wandered up to the table and began running her hand over each item in turn, doing her best to state each objects name and function as she did so to make sure she remembered her studies right.
"Screwdriver, used to help construct muggle furniture so it doesn't fall apart. Ballpoint pen, a quill which doesn't need dipping but only uses one colour of ink. Duct tape, doesn't come close to as useful as a sticking charm despite muggle belief that it can be used for anything.."
She hestitated, picking up a small plastic pot. She examined it closely for awhile and then made an attempt to open it, quite puzzled by its child-safe lid. After a few moments of trying without success she held up the tub attempting to get her teachers attention. She wasn't afraid of the vampire at all, but had always taken the warning she had got in Defence against the Dark Arts Vampire 101 class about meeting her eyes to heart, though she always tried not to be rude or obvious about it.
"Professor, what is this odd jar for? I can't seem to be able to open it."

Mary looks up, almost surprised to see a student in the classroom.
"Ahh, Miss ... Penrose, good evening." Mary looks at the jar Jillian is holding.
"Ah, yes ... medicine, of the sort used to relieve headaches. Very popular among Muggle workers and students alike. The lid is considered childproof, to prevent accidental overdose, which can be harmful. When, in reality, many adults also find the lid difficult to open."
She smiles. It's nice to have an attentive and inquisitive student in the classroom. She gets up, bringing with her a small bottle of white liquid with a tiny brush attached to the inside of the lid. "You did well to identify the ballpoint pen. Do you know what this might be?"

Jillian smiled wider at the praise, before placing the pot down on the table slowly, a little puzzled at not being able to open it but comforted to know that many adult muggles could not either. The thought of experimenting to see if Alohomora flitted through her mind but she instead turned to face the professor once more, peering at the bottle and its little brush. She looked up at the professor, not quite meeting her gaze with an inquisitive expression, her mind raced.
"I am not entirely sure, professor.. I remember in my first year, there was a half-blood girl in my dorm whose muggle mother had given her some coloured polish for her nails, which was was a little similar at least in regard to the brush but that does not seem to have the same texture. I remember as I borrowed some from her to see if it could be used for potions work." She flushed a little as if remembering something bad but fought to compose herself.
"Does it have something to do with the pen?" She asked cautiously, attempting to make a connection as to why the professor had mentioned the two together.

Mary nods. "Nail polish, yes. It is very hard and shiny, while this dries thin and matte. Yes, you are right, it is related to the pen. It is called 'white out' and used to cover written mistakes when writing. Since the ink from pens is not generally erasable."
She gets a sheet of paper, writes something, deliberately making a mistake, and uses the white out to cover the mistake. She fans it, to make itmdry, then writes over the top.
"So much more work, I know, but for those of us without magic it can be very useful. Not with a quill though. The liquid ink doesn't react well to the dried surface."
Mary gets out a paper, hands it to Jillian.
"Your exam relates to a selection of objects, events, and practices, as covered in the course work during the year. You shouldn't find it too difficult. You may begin when you are ready."

Jillian takes the proffered exam paper and moves to her desk, but then hesitates. Looking up, she gazes at her teachers shoulder.
"I am sorry if I have ever insulted you, professor.." She spoke only a little hesitantly, "By accident I mean, either in the classroom o not. Sometimes I forget that you are unable to cast spells as I do. I cannot help but associate you in my mind with power, that sometimes I forget myself. It must be an interesting existence." She smiled politely, her mind wandering to other things as her gaze moved from Professor Kestrel to the shadows around the room and back.
Quietly and respectfully, as if worried she had overstepped her bounds as a student, she sat down at her desk and began unpacking her quill and inks from her back.

Mary smiles, and shakes her head.
"Not insulted me, girl, just caused me to reminisce. Those days were long ago, but they are not forgotten. Power, though, comes in many forms. Next year, in Defense Against the Dark Arts, you will get a glimpse of exactly how much power one of my kind can wield, when we so choose."
The smile that follows is fully fanged, and not the slightest bit friendly. Quite maleficent in fact. And the shadows around her deepen and dance. Then Mary shakes herself, and it's as if the smile had never been.
"Now, to your paper. No more talking unless it is to ask directly about a question."

Jillian shivered at her professors words, the pools of her eyes filled with not only fear but also a dark glint of curiosity. For a moment it seems as though she was dearly tempted to raise her gaze to meet the vampires eyes but as Mary shakes herself Jillian managed to get hold of her own senses. At the professors instruction she looks downwards, focusing her attention on the paper before her.
After reading through the questions she started to write, slowly at first but as she wrote she seemed to settle more and more back to herself. A few minutes later she was writing quickly, quite caught up in the work and enjoying herself as only a ravenclaw can during a written exam. Occasionally she would glance up to check how much time she had, always glancing to her teacher and the shadows behind her before focusing back on her paper.

Professor Kestrel watches the young witch begin work on her paper. She wasn't that young, really. In the blink of an eye she would be adult, and out in the world, fending for herself. Ray knew she needed to do more for these students than what she was doing. They needed to learn how to survive in the world ... and not through Quinn's battle league. They needed to learn how to survive the Muggle world
Next year ... she would up her class program. Teach them politics, economics, survival skills. Yes, that would be good. Useful skills. Maybe even a little religion. It couldn't hurt!
She smiled as Jillian became really engrossed in her work. At least some of her students appreciated her subject.

Jillian finished writing with enough time to read over her answers and tidy her desk. Afterwards she rose from her seat, flashing a smile at Professor Kestrel. Clearly she felt like she had done well, as had been the case with past muggle studies lessons. The fact that this class did not involve much practical work for her anxiety to get the better of her probably played a part in that. She knew that the vampire in front of her was certainly well aware of her struggles when it came to practical DADA lessons.
"I've finished, Professor." She said, "I hope my answers don't let you down."
Collecting up her bag, she started filing towards the door. "I very much look forward to both your classes next year," she added, pausing near the rooms exit.

Mary takes the paper from her, but doesn't look. She smiles, and says "If your quality of work is of the same standard you've shown all your, you won't have let me down, Miss Penrose. Enjoy your summer. Are you attending summer camp?"

Jillian looked back, still not meeting her teachers eyes. A smile spreads across her features at Mary's words however.
"I am hoping to, I have yet to send off an owl to see if there are many spaces however." she spoke hestitantly, doubt filling her mind. She then brightens a little, the doubt being replaced with curiosity and a small amount of additional courage brought on by Professor Kestrel's confidence in her, "What are you summer plans, Professor?"

"I doubt they'd reject you if you want to go. It's a fun place, I'm told. Most of my summer will be spent in London. I'm not dond of the summer, the nights are too short. I may head south for a while."
Mary seems tired, and it's probably that the year is almost over, or it could be the summer and short nights, or any. Umber of things. She smiles, tries one last time to catch Jillian's eyes, just for fun.

Jillians nods slowly, trying to imagine for herself what it must be like to live as a vampire and how different the seasons must be for her teacher. After a moment she blinks and glances up with a look of realisation and sudden curiousity, "Are there many vampires in London? I grew up and live in the city and don't think I ever saw any, nor do I remember my parents saying anything about them.."
She hesitated, realising that in her eager surprise she had met her teachers gaze. She silently scolded herself for letting the post-exam relief and relaxed conversation get the better of her before making an attempt to quickly look away.

Mary smiled broadly, fangs briefly displayed, but there was no maleficience in the smile.
"When we don't want to be seen, we are like the wind. My kind would not have survived since the beginning of time without discretion."
Mary's eyes were a clear green, like absinthe. And that was all they were. There seemed to be no danger there, no power, just eyes.
"Enjoy your summer!" Mary hands Jillian a small spinning disk with a grin.

Jillian had fixed her gaze on Mary's neck but a slightly puzzled look of contemplation was spread across her features, the brief moment of tension in her shoulder that had come with her realisation fell away as she wondered about those eyes. She was not sure she had ever actually seen them properly before.
At her teachers words last words she came out of her reverie and accepted the small spinning disk with a puzzled expression, eyeing it with interest before looking back up. For a second she thought to meet that gaze again but she still felt hesitant and settled her gaze on her cheek instead. "What is this?" She asked.

"A child's fidget toy. All the latest rage apparently. Enjoy it over the summer, and let me know next year what you thought of it."

Jillian beamed, giving Mary a delighted smile and meeting those green eyes intentionally for a moment before nodding.
"Thank you, Professor." she said happily, examining the toy and spinning it between her fingers as she turns to leave the classroom.
