Despite her own usually careless appearance, Professor Ward's classroom was almost always neat. Tonight, however, it was decidedly not. The desks and benches had all been pushed back to the walls, and Professor Ward herself entered in a flurry of robes (and regrettably, several hovering books) some fifteen minutes before the tutorial.
"Locus utilis augeo!" she said, with a sweeping gesture of her wand. The room was abruptly several times its normal size, providing large stretches of empty floor. The charm should ensure that no matter how many students arrived to this extra session, the classroom would provide them with as much space as needed.
Without really paying attention, she plucked her attendant books out of the air and set them on her desk, which was now a good fifteen yards farther from the door than usual. That done, she moved around the perimeter of the room muttering spells, setting up a few basic stations and supplies for Charms practice: bins of cushions, stacks of feathers, barrels of water, targeting circles drawn on the floor. A rack of china plates awaited students who wanted to practice Color-Changing Charms.
As she stepped back to her desk to survey her preparations, several more books arrived behind her. One bumped into the small of her back, and she whirled to face it distractedly. "Oh, for Heaven's sake...revertere!"
One book vanished with a small pop! of bluish light. She waved her wand impatiently at the rest of them, including the ones already sitting on her desk. "Revertere omnis!"
The books disappeared. So did her desk.
Jenny shook her head in resignation and seated herself atop one of the students' desks ranged along the wall. She pulled an extremely battered quill from her pocket and scribbled a note on the back of her hand, then dropped it. The quill vanished before it hit the floor. The moment her mind wandered, another book popped up beside her. She rolled her eyes, but picked the book up and began to read while she awaited any students who might show up.
Later on, she really would have to figure out where her desk had originally come from.

Kleio heard about the extra charms class. This was great. She felt behind in all her classes and any help would be appreciated. She liked charms as one of the more fun classes. She was a fan of the Disney films and thought about the dancing plates. She wondered if many of the things in Disney movies could be done with Charms. While Chalice loved her animals, she also wanted something ... more. She was having trouble with Transfiguration, potions, and divination. She would like to talk to the teacher about what types of jobs wizard do with Charms.
Kleio headed down to the charms classroom and walked into the room. Her eyes widened as she noticed the large amount of space. She slowed her pace as she looked about the room. She couldn't imagine what things they could do with all the different items in the room. She was familiar with the feathers from class. She accidentally made her feather too heavy and couldn't get it off the table. She looked at the rack of china plates and her eyes began to sparkle. Perhaps she could learn to make them dance. Chalice wondered what spell would make them talk. An entire set of talking china would be so amazing. Her mother would have liked that, she thought sadly. It was her mother's specialty charms. Maybe this is where she belonged. She was hopeful as she walked up to the Professor. "Excuse me Professor, do you have a set place for students?" Chalice's green eyes were bright with wonder at the amazing room.

Victoire always liked Charms, they were simple and delicate. Reminded her of Ballet, sometimes she missed dancing. She still did it on occasion but not like before school. It was more of a hobby now something she did to relax that was different from constant study and reading. She walked into the Charms room, arching a brow at the size of the room. Noting the different things in the room. Maybe she could kill two birds with stone today, practice charms as well as the bird conjuring charm for her Transfiguration NEWT.
She walked over to a bin with cushions after she placed her bag on a chair. She could start here once she learned what Professor Ward wanted them to do.

Iris walked into class, alone for once, and paused just to the side of the doorway, surveying the stations set up by Professor Ward along the walls of the enlarged classroom. A few students had already arrived, both Ravenclaws. She sniffed, overachievers. The first year looked ridiculous, staring around with bug-eyed wonder at something as mundane as a bunch of normal items just sitting there. Still, watching the 6th year might give her a few tips on what to expect from the more advanced charm classes. What was her name again? Something french, her mother was that Beauxbatons champion that came here in 1994 for the Triwizard tournament. Um...Valerie? Veronica? Vic...Victoire! Victoire Weasley, somewhat pureblooded, rather popular, sort of pretty, a bit smart, really the whole package, if you think about it. Not that Iris did. She knew that she was better, she was just younger, so it was necessary to be nice, at least for now.
"Hello?" She said sweetly, approaching the older girl. "My name is Iris, I'm a few years under you. I was wondering if you knew what the focus of today's session will be?"

At Chalice's question, Jenny pulled herself out of her book with a start. She set it down and smiled at Chalice, hopping down from her perch on the desk. She glanced swiftly around the room, noting the other young witches who had arrived. It was a fairly small turnout so far, but she didn't mind that. It would give her time to pay individual attention to the students.
"Good evening, all," she said in a voice pitched to carry down the room. "Welcome to Charms prep. These sessions are intended to give you a chance to practice the application of the spells we've covered this year, so that you can approach your exams with confidence."
"As you can see, I've set up a number of objects for you to practice with, but if you need something that isn't here, simply ask. Similarly, if you want help with something in particular, well, that is what I'm here for. Don't be shy about it. I know exams can seem daunting..." She gave Chalice a kind look as she said this, remembering very well how nervous she'd been for her first end-of-the-year exams. "But I want you all to feel comfortable with your Charms."
"I suggest that you each pick one charm that you would like to practice or improve tonight. Miss Weasley, as a NEWT student, remember not to neglect the theory. The examiners expect you to have a higher understanding of Charms than at the OWL level. You should understand the basic components of each spell: the intention, the incantation, and the wand movements...and how they work together." She paused, her eyes twinkling. "Miss Burke, only the charms we have covered in this year, if you please. Nothing more advanced."
That said, the professor turned most of her attention to Chalice, though she kept one eye on the older students to see what they did. "Miss Storm, what would you like to work on?"

When the other two girls entered, Chalice became reserved. She still didn't do well in groups. After the incident with the moke in the Magical creatures class she also didn't feel very comfortable around Victoire. She waited for the Professor as she spoke to the other students. Once she was done, Chalice quietly stepped forward, "I..I'm having trouble with my Levitation spell. It sank instead of floated."
Chalice didn't seem too distraught over the lack of a floating feather. She did look determined to try again. She had been practicing her wand movements in her room. She understood the swish part, but the flick seemed to cause her some trouble. She wasn't very coordinated. She had watched the others and it seemed the 'flick' had to be short and swift. When she tried, it was either too slow or she flicked her own head which didn't help as her wand was large. She pulled out her Ebony, 8 3/8 inches wand with a core of chimera tongue. "I know it picked me, but it's a bit heavy. Sometimes I feel it has a mind of it's own."

Victorie thought for a moment, might as well try the two birds with one stone. Since she had to understand the theory. "Do you think, I could get some help with avis?"
Maybe she could figure out what she was getting wrong since she had his wand movement down but maybe she was saying it wrong. Maybe she could it the birds and not just the bang and smoke with nothing.
She did give Chalice a smile, she really needed to apologize for the last class. "It took me sometime to get a bond with my wand when I first got it. Olivander says, wand relationships are two fold. The wand learning from the wizard and the wizard learning from the wand. So keep trying, it picked you for a reason."

Jillian slipped into the room awkwardly carrying a large birdcage containing a somewhat perturbed raven and looked around. Noticing the other students were already drawing their wands and in place to practise she gave Professor Ward a slightly flushed smile as she made her way to a space.
"I thought I was going to be late.." She muttered softly as way of a greeting, before placing the birdcage on a desk, rattling it slightly in her nervousness. The raven immediately squawked an objection, glaring at the messy haired girl with its beady eyes.
"I, er.. need to work on my silencing charm, I hope that isn't a problem? I can manage bullfrogs but.." She glanced at the raven which continued glaring at her, she then turned an apologetic gaze to each of the other girls in turn. "I hope it doesn't interupt your practice, I'm certain I'll get the hang of silencing it soon."

It was always a delight to have students as eager to learn as Jenny was to teach. Far from being daunted by the questions from each girl, Professor Ward actually seemed to perk up. She greeted Jillian with a cheerful nod, and strode briskly towards the desk with the caged raven on it.
"I'll be happy to help you in a moment, Miss Weasley. Let me just get Jillian and Chalice settled."
She eyed the raven consideringly, then pulled out her wand and pointed it at one of the bird's wings. "Accio feather!"
The feather plucked itself neatly and settled in her hand. She offered it to Chalice, raising her voice a bit to be heard over the raucous squawking that resulted. "Try this, Miss Storm. Charms work the most easily the more appropriate the material is, and for Wingardium Leviosa, a feather from a living bird is about as appropriate as you can get. As for your wand, they do have personalities, you know. Some take longer than others to form a true partnership with their chosen witch, and ebony in particular rewards self-confidence. You must believe the feather will do what you want it to. But rest assured," she added encouragingly, gently steering Chalice by the shoulder to a table at the side of the room, "Victoire is right. Your wand only chose you because you have the capability."
"Miss Penrose, the far end of the room, I think. Otherwise none of us will be able to hear ourselves think." She grinned unrepentantly at the squawking raven, giving a small chuckle. "You are a noisy old thing. It was only a small covert—you'll never miss it. Still, waste not, want not. It saves us having to tickle you. Remember, a nice sharp downward flick at the end of Silencio, Jillian, and emphasis on the second syllable. Keep it crisp. Ravens require a bit more forcefulness than frogs; they're considerably more strong-willed."
"Now then, Miss Weasley...Avis." Her voice was warm as she turned to Victoire. She'd noticed and appreciated the way that Victoire had encouraged the young first-year. "What seems to be the trouble?"

Vic waited for Professor Ward to address the other students. She didn't mind the wait gave her a chance to go over what she could be doing wrong in her conjugation. When Professor Ward address her. She came out of her head with a little shake. Giving the Professor a smile, "I think I have the pronunciation down, but I am not getting the bang with smoke consistently. The birds are hit and miss. I know that this falls under my Transfiguration NEWT. But I was thinking if I got the theory behind it. Maybe it would help me in Transfiguration and then also help in my Charms NEWT. Kill two birds with one stone."
She was hoping Professor Ward would go for her idea, Charms and Transfiguration where two of her favorites classes. So the fact, this year was proving to be a little more difficult than the previous years. Was shaking her confidence.

Jenny nodded and hooked a hand behind her own neck, her eyes going slightly distant as she considered Victoire's problem.
"You're right—although we do teach the subjects separately, the theory is linked together. One of my professors used to say 'Magic is magic is magic.'"
Beckoning, she walked over to the blackboard at the front of the room, where she drew the wand movement: two graceful arcs joined together, the simplest representation of a bird in flight. "Conjuration is interesting, because the spells are both charms and transfigurations. The object of your charm is, of course, the air; but you are also transfiguring air to life, or energy, or spirit...however you choose to think about it. The thing is, according to the laws of elemental configuration, you can't just make life out of nothing. You have to borrow it from somewhere: yourself."
Or at least, that was the only ethical place to take the energy from. Jenny left the other implications unsaid, knowing that she was already skirting dangerously close to raising Minerva McGonagall's eyebrows. She wasn't sure she agreed with the Hogwarts philosophy on such things. Ilvermorny had taken a rather different approach to the spirit world, influenced as it had been by centuries of trading magical knowledge with the Native American magicians.
"In any case, that is why birds are among the most suitable subjects for live conjuration, being so air-oriented to begin with...and why the birds created by Avis will always reflect your own emotional state. If you're angry, for example, your birds may attack the person you're angry with."
Realizing she was beginning to run on a bit, Professor Ward quirked a quick smile at Victoire. "I always think it's easier to do things when you know exactly what's happening," she said, almost apologetically.
"In a technical sense, I think perhaps we might work on your visualization and your confidence in the spell. It's natural to start to doubt a spell when you have trouble with it, but it makes things more difficult." Jenny made as if to sit on the edge of her desk and remembered just in time that it wasn't there. She leaned against the blackboard instead, heedless of the white chalk dust that transferred itself to her black robes.
"Let's try for, oh...three sparrows. Make sure you have a nice clear visualization before you try, and remember what it is that the spell does."

Jillian gave her teacher an enthusiastic nod before collecting up the cage again, making her way to the far end of the room. On the way she hesitantly muttered an apology to her fellow Ravenclaws, Chalice and Victoire. Reaching the far bench she muttered a complaint to the bird for trying to drown out Professor Ward's instructions before unclipping her wand from her leather belt.
"Be forceful.. a sharp downward flick.." She reminded herself, eyeing the unruly bird nervously as she gathered herself and strived to relax.

Chalice managed a shy smile and nodded taking Victoire's words to heart before turning back to her wand and the Professor. When Jillian came into the room, Chalice offered a shy smile. She had a raven as well. Perhaps she could introduce them to Maleficent. Chalice was sure she would love another raven to speak to instead of all the owls. They were getting on her nerves. Chalice had to constantly ask her to behave and stop pestering them.
As the Professor called the feather, Chalice silently tried to communicate to the raven. "I'm sorry you lost a feather. Thank you and I'll introduce you to Maleficent later." She offered the bird a smile and followed where the Professor would have her practice. She looked at her wand. It was made from Ebony, he said it knew I was comfortable being the outsider. Chalice felt the wand, it was shorter but he knew Transfiguration would not be my favorite of classes so it made sense for the shorter wand. Her brother said it was because she was stubborn and didn't change her mind when making decisions.
She held her wand carefully and made sure her wrist performed the movement. It took a few times to get the flick just the way she wanted it. Chalice was glad that she didn't hit herself while the other's in class could watch. She put the wand down and then practiced the words, "Wingardium Leviosa". She shook her head as that sounded to fast. Perhaps she should drag it out, "Wing...ardium Lev..iosa". That didn't sound right either. She picked up her book from her bag and looked at the incantation. Professor Ward had told Victorie that intonation made a difference. After looking for a few minutes she closed the book and tried again, "Win-gar-dium levi-o-sa". She said it that way several times before picking up her wand.
It was time to try the real thing. She wanted to be careful as this was the raven's feather and didn't want his sacrifice to be in vein. She picked up her wand and quietly said,'Swish and flick', then she uttered the words, 'Win-gar-dium Levi-0-sa'. As she spoke the words, the black feather began to float above the table. Chalice smiled at her accomplishment and made it dance around her table. She played with the feather for a few moments before trying again.

Iris leaned against the wall, scowling at the reprimand as she watched all the other wonderful underachievers move about on their own little tasks. If she wanted to try more advanced spells who was Professor Ward to stop her? Still, she knew that at least in this classroom, it would be best to present the picture of a devoted student, and so went over the spells her class had covered that year. Lumos Duo or Maxima could be fun, but she might get in trouble for blinding her study mates. Maybe a combination? Might as well have a good time if she couldn't actually try to learn anything useful from the upperclassmen there. There was that smoke charm, oh yes that could work.
She left her bag pushed against the wall and moved to an unused area of the room, twirling her wand casually. As she walked, a series of silver rings puffed out from the tip of her wand and floated gently, holding their shape far longer than regular smoke. Taking her place a good distance from a barrel of water, she raised her wand and murmured "Aqua Erecto". Immediately, a thin stream of water raised from the barrel and began slurping its way through the rings she had set up, getting thinner and thinner as it got farther from its origin. Iris was entranced, and thrilled with her own control, gently encouraging the stream to bend and twist its way through her obstacle course. Just as it reached her, however, that bloody raven let out its loudest squawk yet, making Iris lose her concentration. The spell ended abruptly, dousing both her and the floor in cold water.
"Do you mind?" She yelled at Penrose, furious.

Jillian had taken a couple of extra long steps back from the cage before practising her wand movements, obviously worried that she would accidentally jab the bird while attempting to add a little extra force to the final flick of the wand. Even so the raven did not seem to be appreciative of the gesture at all. Jillian had just opened her mouth to make her first attempt at casting her silencing charm when the raven let out its squawk which was closely followed by the Slytherin girls complaint. Jillian spun around, eyes wide and cheeks flushed with embarassment as she caught sight of the damp younger student. For a second she was unable to find her voice as she realised what must have happened but after a moment she stepped forward toward the girl.
"I.. I'm so so sorry!" She said, sounding flustered. "I'll get the hang of the spell soon, I'm sure!"
Jillian paused, quite unable to meet Iris' eyes. Even so she managed to put on a smile and adjusted the grip on her wand.
"I, er.. I know a hot-air charm if you like?" She hesitated, pointing her wand at Iris and trying to rack her mind for the correct incantation.

"So like making a haircut but without the murder." Made sense in her mind and at least the Professor would know she had some idea what she was talking about. After all, she had grown up on the stories of her uncle and his friends. He listened to what else Professor Ward had to say and committed it to memory.maybe now she could do it. So she cleared her mind thought of what she wanted to do and why. Did the motion as she said the word. Hearing the bang and the smoke with a blue flash. Three sparrows appeared, making Vic smile as she got it.
Though she left them disappear as she heard Iris. Sure she had every right to be upset for getting wet, the bird was annoying. Clearly, her housemate was flustered and they didn't need anymore mishaps. So Victoire walked touched Jillian's shoulder, "Let me try, you clear your mind and try again with your bird." She pointed her wand at Iris made the gesture her Aunt had taught her, saying aer calidus. And a blast of hot air shot out drying Iris. Giving the previous wet, now dry girl a smile, "Much better, helps if you drown others out."

Iris quelled her temper and managed a small, albeit strained, smile to Victoire. "Thanks," she said, "sorry I yelled, that was rude of me."
Though, she thought snidely, a drought charm would've been more effective. She decided to demonstrate this on the floor, after all, this was Charms class, and she couldn't have her classmates slipping. With a wave of her wand and the appropriate incantation, the puddle was gone. Easy.
Or maybe not so much, as the water merely gurgled back into existence a few moments later. She cursed under her breath and ran to her notes to see where she went wrong. Maybe it was the inflection of her voice?
"Professor? What's the right inflection for the incantation of the Drought Charm? I thought you dropped the 'oh' in the middle, but that didn't really seem to work."

As Jillian's raven squeaked, Chalice accidentally caused a small "Pouf" as the feather disappeared. She shook her head trying to figure out how that happened. As her head cleared she began to notice things in the room. Iris seemed to be all wet, Jillian seemed to be upset, and the raven looked agitated. She watched as Victoire assisted their housemate with instruction and drying Iris. Chalice needed to figure out how to patch up her mistep with Victoire. She was so nice and her family had been so helpful.
Chalice watched as Iris used a different charm that she hadn't seen yet. This was the second new charm for her to witness tonight. She went to her books to look up how she made her feather disappear by mistake. She opened her standard book of spells year one. The Levitation charm had three other charms listed: Hover, Rocket, and floating. Chalice flipped to Hover charm and it seemed that only made items float not disappear. Next she looked at the Rocket charm. It said it violently makes the item float. Perhaps she did that by mistake. She looked at the final variation but was sure that wasn't the case. Chalice smiled to herself. It definitely wasn't the floating charm as it simply made things float.
Chalice went to the bin of feathers and took them back to her desk. She looked over to the other girls and they seemed to be well in hand. She took one of the feathers and began again. "Win-gar-dium Levi-O-sa" This time she said it with more confidence. The feather started to float but not as high as the Raven's feathers. She would have to ask Maleficent for some of her feathers.

Jillian turned a thankful smile to Victoire, she had of course heard of the upperclassmen whose family was rather well known but she couldn't remember having actually spoken to the girl before. She blushed a little as she turned back to the caged bird on the desk before her, adjusting the goggles atop her head and raising her wand. Hesitating a little she glanced back at the younger slytherin student, feeling a little relieved that Iris had turned her attention elsewhere. The fact helped her relax.
"Alright.." she whispered to herself, fixing the raven with as fierce a look as she could. "No more trouble you, okay?" More determined than before she ran the incantation through her mind once more before saying it aloud, "Silencio!" she stated firmly, tracing her wand through the movements and ending with a sharp downward flick as instructed. The belligerent raven made an attempt to put her off but was cut off halfway through its squawk.
Jillian stared at the bird with wide beaming eyes as it made a few attempts to make a sound. Her smile was bright and proud as she leaned forward, carefully examining the raven to see no sign of swelling. She had done it and on the first attempt too, of course being able to reliably repeat the effect was the most important thing. She calmed her expression, taking a moment to look around the room while she waiting for her charm to wear off. For a moment she considered thanking Iris for inadvertently helping push her to be firmer than usual but she decided against it.

Jenny had started to move towards the far end of the room at the sound of Iris's shout, but she checked herself as Victoire headed over. Hanging back to watch, she was pleased to see that the girls seemed to have smoothed things over by themselves. From her own student days, she'd formed the opinion that it was best to let such things play their course, unless it started to get out of hand. Otherwise, you ended up with students feuding in private, and before you knew it jinxes and minor curses broke out in the halls every time a professor's back was turned.
Having noticed Chalice's success, she patted the young first-year approvingly on the arm. "Well done, Miss Storm," she said quietly. "You see? You can do it. Five points to Ravenclaw for now—show me before the exams that you can do it, shall we say...five times in a row with any feather, and you will earn another five."
She left Chalice to practice and walked down to the other end of the room, where she was pleased to see Jillian manage to silence her raven. She gave the girl a quick smile for her accomplishment before answering Iris's question.
"Locum sicco is the incantation you want, Miss Burke. It's important to keep the area that you want to dry very firmly in mind when you use it. We don't want to dry the entire county, after all...just that puddle. Give it a try if you like."
Professor Ward perched herself atop the nearest desk to Victoire while she waited. She nodded to her and murmured softly, "Nicely done, Miss Weasley." She didn't elaborate. She could have been talking about Avis or Victoire's peacemaking. Or both.

Chalice smiled at her professor and looked around the room. Everything seemed in order so back to work she went. She took up the next feather and began to work on it's levitation. She sat at her desk and practiced the 'swish and flick'. She once again pointed her wand with confidence and tried again: "Win-gar-dium Levi-O-sa". This time her voice was strong and with more passion. She noticed that her feather floated a bit higher this time, almost 4 inches off the table. It would only let her make it dance a few times before falling to the table again. She continued to work on the feathers trying to get them to the same height as the raven feather.

Now that everyone seemed to be back to doing their own thing, Vic decided to try her charm again. After all practice makes prefect and in away she was killing two birds with one stone. She liked helping out especially those in her house. Which was why she probably should apologize to Chalice for getting possessive over her notes. But she could worry about that later NEWTs were more important right now.
She looked over at Professor Ward saying softly back to her, "Thank you, professor." before setting her mind back to work on her spell. She focused on what she needed to do again. Before going through the motion again, producing the same bang and smoke again with three birds. She was trying for four but three was good. At least, she had produced something again.

Jillian focused on the raven in front of her, noticing that things had quietened down in the room and not wanting to disrupt things again. Her thoughts wandered briefly to the other students in the room. First she thought of Victoire and how she did not want to let the older student down by failing with her spell now, not after Victoire had come to her aid. Then she thought of Chalice, remembering her own first year and how inspired she had been by the older students. No, she could not fail in front of her either and nor she felt could she face the girl if she hurt the raven in any way. Finally she thought of Iris, she had no doubt that the girl would give her a scathing look if Jillian did so much as expand the raven slightly and right now, that could perhaps be worse than any comment or remark she could make.
"Okay.." Jillian took a deep breath, focusing hard on the bird before her which had just begun to get back its voice. She stared at it as if she could silence it with a glare, if not the spell. She raised her wand, "Silencio!" She incanted.
The downward flick was a little more forceful than she had intended and her wand tip clipped against the cage. The raven jumped and opened its beak to shriek but again there was no sound. Jillian glanced around, beaming to herself but a little nervous in case anyone, especially Chalice or Iris, noticed what she had done. She held her wand low, surreptitiously checking the tip with her other hand, it was undamaged.
