Madrona noted that Marco was definitely beginning to calm down, and was basking in the praise and awe he was receiving for the simple act of eating his favorite food. She shook her head in amusement as he grew from his initial 3 inch size to a much more stately 7 inches, eliciting more wonder from his fan club. As sje watched though, she noted a slight pause in his bearing as he was held by the last arrival, the first year Ravenclaw. She studied his face as he turned slightly to face her, his tail twitching as if shaking off an annoying fly. Madrona eyed the girls face as she held the moke, her features were schooled into a deep concentration and the hand taking notes was gripping her quill a little too tightly.
Madrona casually sauntered over and listened to the magic surrounding the girl. Ah, she was a zoohpath. That would explain it. She leaned in as the girl passed Marco to another student. "You'll find that magical beasts communicate very differently than the non magical kind. They will only talk when and if they wish, and only to whom they wish to speak," she murmured in the girls ear. "See me after class."

Chalice listened well and wrote down her words. She was so excited she turned to Professor Pendragon and nodded. She couldn't wait. The moke was amazing and she couldn't wait to see what it would say. She began to write down how the skin felt and how it was able to change it's size. She noted that he loved the fruit that everyone was giving it. Chalice made several notes about it's unusual feet and claws. She noted it's color and wondered if it was a boy or a girl. Perhaps they covered all this and she missed it.
She looked for a familiar student and saw Victoire from her house. "Excuse me, I'm sorry I was late. May I borrow your notes?"

Madrona got the attention of the class, calling out, "Now that most of you have had a chance to closely examine Marco, let's try to use a bit of logic. Who can tell me what they think his species' Ministry rating is, from 1-5? Please remember to give some of your reasoning, and be prepared to defend it."

Chalice quickly looked down at Victorie's paper. She noticed the ratings and that intelligence was a factor. Since the moke wouldn't let her communicate with it, she knew it had to be rated highly. How would she explain it?
Chalice raised her hand and waited to be acknowledged. Once she was given the ok to answer, "I would rate it a 3x because of it's ability to change size to avoid danger. This means the creature has intelligence and makes an effort to hide from prey."

"That is a good guess, but also remember that the ratings are also about the danger level of the creature. The footnote of that rating means 'competent wizards should cope', so do you believe that mokes pose considerable danger to a witch or wizard? Can anyone else give me a different reasoning for its rating?" Madrona looked over the class, a bit put out at the lack of hands in the air. Maybe it was a bit silly of her to expect teenagers to be 100% enthusiastic about speaking up in class, especially in a class setting where there were members from several year levels.

Dmitry raised his hand. "Any creature, magical or not has the potential to turn dangerous. Would the rating be based on the fact that if provoked enough the moke can cause a danger to a careless which or wizard either by its teeth or claws combined with it's size shifting?"

Madrona smiled, "Excellent point, five points to Slytherin. That is correct, mokes are mean when cornered and can do significant damage to a person trying to do it or its young harm. Also something to take into consideration is that they are very good at escaping. Potential poachers often lose them suddenly in the middle of a hunt, and magizoologists trying to sketch them look up to see them gone."

Victoire arched an eyebrow as Chalice took her notes. She was all for inter-house unity, but the 1st year had shown up late. That wasn't her responsibility. Then before even waiting for an answer from Victoire she had looked at her notes. Rude much? While her family might have helped the girl and her brother out, rudeness was something Victoire did not like at all. So the 1st was slowly losing points for Vic to become on friendly terms with her. Especially since she had taken the creature from Dmitry when he had asked her. She was still going over the whole interaction in her head, that she missed answering the classification question. Still, she took her paper back from the girl to write down a few notes.

Chalice noticed the protectiveness of her notes, "I...I'm sorry for looking at your notes." She moved back to where she was earlier and wrote down the information just provided. She still wasn't used to big groups and her excitement over the creature had made her forget her manners. She went back to taking her notes and listening more about the wonderful new creature.

"Alright everybody," Madrona called, "I think we are done for today so if you have any other pressing questions let me know, otherwise I will see you next class. For homework, please write at least 2 feet of parchment on the behavior of mokes, both social and independent, to be turned in first thing as you arrive. Those I asked to stay late, you know who you are." She moved over and scooped up Marco, striding over and settling him back into his hutch while the students made small talk among themselves and packed up.

Vic made quick work of her things, gave the Professor a smile. Before heading back to the castle, she had some reading to do on the Fae. So far she was coming up with more questions than answers. But if anything maybe Professor Oakwood could answer them but something said that asking him would give her more questions. So she was going to get as much information as she could before going to him with her questions.

Chalice waited for everyone to leave, she looked away as Vic left. She felt horrible but there was not much she could do. She packed up her things and then got out a notebook. She stayed where she was and watched the moke. He or she was amazing.

Madrona tucked Marco into his hutch carefully, where he promptly fell asleep, digesting his large meal. She rose and walked over to sit at the table across from Chalice, her hands clasped together firmly in front of her. "If you are not aware of the reason I asked you to stay late Ms. Storm," she began, trying to keep her voice and face neutral despite Chalice's hopeful gaze, "it is because I worry that you are pushing your abilities beyond what you are currently capable of."
Her brows drew together as she studied the young girl before her. "You obviously are aware of your magic, which is surprising for someone as young as you are, but you are...clumsy with it. I don't think you realize the harm that could have come to both you and Marco if I allowed you to continue bashing your mind into his. As I said earlier, the mind of a magical creature is different than that of a nonmagical one; magical creatures are strong and have an awareness that their counterparts in the muggle world do not. They require finesse to communicate with, but your attempt earlier had all the dexterity of a tap dancer at a ballet recital."
Madrona sighed and rubbed a hand over her eyes. "I apologize for the bluntness, I didn't mean to speak like that, it's just I am very protective of my friends. I don't have your innate abilities, and I don't think you need to know just what I'd do to have half the potential for communication you do. If you are willing, however, I would like to spend at least a few sessions over the last few weeks of this year teaching you restraint."

Chalice listened to the professor. As she began to talk about her unique gift, visions flashed before her eyes. She once again heard the familiar voice as the doe had reached out to her mind. She heard the crying of the doe as she ran from the hunter. As her mind connected with the doe, she felt it's fear and panic. A tear slipped from Chalice's eyes as she remembered her scream as the Doe was shot. The glass from the car windows scrapped her face as her dad tried to keep control of the car. The death of the doe pounding in Chalice's mind as she kept screaming. The car flipped as they crashed into a telephone pole. She takes a deep breath as she closed her eyes to regain some control. "Yes. I would like some help to gain control. They first reached out to me when I was little. They were my friends. As I grew older, I was able to talk to them." She became quiet. "Then the accident happened with my parents. I could feel the pain from the doe, it was so real. My...my powers caused the car crash and ... and ... I killed my parents." Chalice had tears in her eyes and looked to the Professor. "I love my animals, but I don't want to hurt anyone ever again because I don't know how to control my powers."

Madrona looked grim at Chalices declaration. "That much is obvious. However, it is not your fault that your parents died. Most of the things that happen in this world can have the blame assigned to no one, and this is one such occasion. You are not a killer, you did not mean to make the car crash, just as the doe did not mean to tear into your mind in her panic. Would you blame your father for swerving? How about the doe for dying? If the answer is no, then the only logical conclusion is that you were not and are not at fault. I'm sure this does nothing to soothe your troubled soul, but it needs to be said. Control over magic is control over emotions, over thoughts, and over yourself."
She looked as if she were about to continue speaking, but broke off to think. "...there is a method used by muggles, called...oh let's see...Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. DBT for short. It is a sort of way to train the mind. Say you miss a class, and your immediate thought would be that you are a terrible person and that the professor of that class was going to fail you for being such a worthless student. That immediate assumption is complete conjecture with no backing in reality, yet you believe it. DBT teaches you how to recognize erroneous thought processes like that, and eventually to evaluate and dismiss them. I think it would be prudent for you to begin by keeping a journal with you. When you feel yourself try to guess the outcome of actions you perform or words you say, write it down. After at least 24 hours, read over the notes, and compare to the actual events that have transpired. Do you think you can do that?"

Chalice wiped away her tears. She listened to her professor explain things from a different perspective. Of course she didn't blame her father or the doe. They..merely reacted to their given situations. She knew her teacher was right and that control must be over her emotions. She would need to be clear headed when practicing magic. It could be dangerous for her, her friends, or even muggles if she wasn't careful. Chalice normally contained her emotions. "I try to control my emotions. I think I..I bottled them up too long and in situations when I get too excited it comes out without me thinking. I ... simply act. Today I learned that I need to try to think through my actions instead of allowing my impulse to have control."
She thought about the second part of what they professor had said. "Does this muggle process work? I could start a journal, is there a way to protect it so no one can read it? I would want to keep it private." She looked hopeful and willing to try anything to relieve the stress and anxiety she has felt since coming to Hogwarts.

"I promise you it will help. As for guarding your notebook..." Madrona looked awkward at Chalice's question. "Er...well...maybe I'm not the best person to ask about...things like that. You should try Professor Ward, or maybe Professor Ria, they'd have some suggestions for you, unfortunately, I'm pretty rubbish at charms.
"Gaining control over your powers, well, that I can help with. Ink?" she called, smiling, "Ink, could you come out for a moment?"
Slowly, something black poked its head out of Madrona's pocket, it's pink forked tongue flicking the air curiously. It moved out and up, sliding up onto the table with a grace that could only be achieved by a snake. As it slithered up, flashes of red shone from under it. "This is Ink," Madrona stated proudly, stroking the reptiles head. "He's a young Red Bellied Black snake, only a few months old at the moment, so he's not that big, but I suspect he'll be one of the larger specimens of his species by the time he's full grown. I keep him with me because as a baby, he tried to take a bite too big for him, which gravely injured him and ruined his fangs. He's no longer able to hunt for himself, so an old friend sent him my way. I know some are afraid of snakes, but he's a real cupcake, aren't you?" She tickled his sides and he rolled a bit, exposing his crimson red belly for scratches. "I'd like you to keep him alive over the summer. He'll let you know when he's hungry, and when he wants to sun himself, otherwise he's pretty easy to get along with. I want you to practice reaching your mind to his, and also shutting off his voice in you. He's mild mannered enough not to be insulted, and I find his kind are pretty relaxed about speaking with mankind."

Chalice nodded at the Professor. "I will see if either professor is available." She wasn't overly worried about her 1st year Ravenclaw girls. Her biggest worry was her big nosy brother. Ever since they found her, he keeps looking at her waiting for Chalice to start crying. The nightmares are less frequent but still happen.
When Ink came out, Chalice perked up. She had a smile as if she was meeting another person instead of a snake. As his tongue flicked the air she wondered what he was thinking. Could he taste her lilac soap? How was his eyesight? As he moved she wondered how his scales would feel against her skin which caused a giggle to pass through her lips. She looked at the teacher with a smile as she listened carefully. As she mentioned that he was hurt, Chalice looked back at Ink with care and concern. When he rolled over to get belly scratches, Chalice's smile seemed to get bigger. She loved his personality and how he was receptive to being touched.
When the professor offered her to take care of him, she couldn't believe it. "Oh Professor. He is adorable. What does he like to eat? Where does he like to sleep? I ... I don't want to put him in an aquarium like the muggles do." She had a bit of a frown and worry on how to take care of him. Chalice knew that most people didn't like snakes. it also didn't help that He Who Must Not be Named had a fondness for them. She nibbled her lip thinking of how she could take care of him without one.

"No, and I doubt you'd find an aquarium or terrarium big enough to fit him when he's grown. He's little now, but be prepared for him to get over a meter long within the next few months. I would recommend you finding or making a den for him, someplace warm where he can curl up to sleep.
"He like frogs best, but I know you aren't allowed to use magic outside of school, and frogs are a bit tough to catch without a wand, though I do know that some muggle children like to make a game of it. Otherwise, lizards, fish, or eggs are good, but you do have to make sure that they're dead before feeding him. I can give you a bag of food with a preservation charm that should last you the summer, as long as you don't fall for his trickery. He likes to beg for food even when he isn't hungry, and nobody wants him to get sick from overeating, so remember that once a week is plenty."
She smiled down at Ink, who was curling his way around an inkpot, tongue flicking madly. "Remember, snakes are deaf, so he might feel the vibrations of your voice, but he won't know what you are saying unless you try talking a different way. Why don't you try introducing yourself?"

Chalice smiled and looked at the baby snake. "I'm not sure what will happen this summer. We were living with my friend Rose Weasely but...I'm unsure of what our plans will be after the school year. If we do stay with the Weaselys, I can send an owl asking about where we will stay and how to make a den for Ink."
Ink was so cute and she couldn't wait to start talking to him. She was from Scotland and her uncle had a strong accent that she could try to mimic. She made eye contact with Ink to be polite while talking to him. Her baroque was a bit light but still but held a bit of vibration, "Hello, my name is Chalice." She thought it sounded gruff to her, but hoped it was ok.

Madrona choked down a laugh at Chalice's first attempt at communication. "Er...that's...one way to go about it," she attempted to be kind about it, but struggled to find the proper words.
"When I said 'use a different voice' I didn't mean an accent. Snakes are deaf, remember? Tone and inflection mean nothing to them. What I meant was find a different voice than what comes out of your throat, and more what is in your mind. That's what tbis exercise is: an exercise of mind. Now try again, and don't make any sound."

Chalice winced and gave a bit of a smile. She looked at Ink once again. This time she smiled and let her eyes make contact. She began to concentrate and feel out with her mind. She felt something and reached out towards that contact. She could feel little resistance. As she began to press gently, she thought of the same words. In her head she could hear her Scottish baroque as she tried again. "Hello Ink, my name is Chalice."
She waited patiently as she looked at the little snake.
