Madrona fussed with the placement of several scrolls of parchment laid out neatly on a rough wooden table set up on the castle lawn, glancing over at the smallish shelter made out of a wicker basket with an exit cut in it that lay nearby, protecting the day's lesson from curious eyes. There really wasn't much of a classroom setting appropriate for the study of magical beasts, so she had left leaflets in all the dormitories and the Great Hall that her very first class was to be held here, almost perfectly centered between the lake and the forest, but not too far from the entrance to the castle, just in case something happened that required help from another teacher. Not that she was expecting something like that, she just felt it was best to be safe when letting students come near potentially harmful creatures.
She absentmindedly dusted off her hands on her skirt, her robes tossed casually on a stump nearby. Had she thought of everything? What would be the students' attitudes towards her lesson? Was she actually prepared for this, or just fooling herself?
She sighed, and her right hand drifted into her pocket to brush against her good luck charm, Ink, who twisted lovingly around her fingers, trying to allay her fears. Too late to back out now, she had the job, and the students were coming whether she was ready or not.

Victoire was actually excited, she liked magical creatures. Like the stories her Uncle Charlie always told her or she heard from other members of her family. She even thought about getting into the field after graduation. But the idea of being a curse breaker seemed more exciting to her. She gave Professor Pendragon a smile, before taking a set on the wooden table. Getting her materials ready for the class. She always did like having classes outside, kept her clam and with the open space if she did forget herself and catch something on fire. At least, it wasn't inside the castle.

The Care of Magical Creatures will be held out side on the grounds just past the entrance of the castle, settled between the Black Lake and the Forbidden Forest. Please come prepared.
Dmitry never really had a class that surround magical creatures class while at Durmstrang. They where taught about them but nothing like this, nothing hands on. He was acutely excited to look in to something that could possibly challenge him especially after the weekend Hogsmeade outing he had had with Lilianna. After that he felt he could take on anything.
He walked of the great hall in to the day's sunlight, as he was walking out on to the lawns he tried to image just what the class would entail. What kind of creatures would the see, certainly there were some you couldn't bring to a school but he was for more sure that list was small.
Walking down the lawns, making is way to the black lake he saw had to be the class. A professor, at lest he assumed she was the professor, stood by a table with a student already sitting on it. as he got closer he could see he was in the right spot Professor Pendragon was standing waiting for students to show up. Behind her sat a small sack looking structure, which must have held todays lesson. Sitting on the table, was the Ravenclaw girl Professor Okawood had asked to stay behind with him in divination last week.
As he walked up to the pair, he set his book bag down on the table and took out a copy "Wands welding: An advanced guide to dueling 500th Anniversary Edition" and began reading while they all waited to see who else would show up.

Madrona smiled at the students as they began to arrive, taking out books and quills and chatting quietly between one another. She had been worried that some might be a little rowdy, which would scare her friend, but it looked like everyone would be respectful.
She cleared her throat and waited for the early birds to settle down before speaking. "Hello class, my name is Madrona Pendragon, and I'll be your new Care of Magical Creatures professor during your years here at Hogwarts."
She paused, unsure what to say next. "The creatures you will see in our lessons together will range in complexity and rating as we progress, although creatures higher than the ministries XXX rating will be discussed, but not examined until in the NEWT level classes starting next year.
"While we wait for stragglers, can someone please tell me the basis behind the Ministry grading system of Magical Beasts?"

Dmitry, closed his book, placed it back in his bag and gave the Professor his full Attention when she cleared her throat. He didn't know the Ministry of Magic had a classification system for magical creatures. He had never really thought about it until now. Minutes in to the class and already having to think about what he didn't know. This was going to be interesting.

"I know the five classifications range from boring to known wizard killer. Course my uncle doesn't understand why Dragons need such a high rating because he gets on perfectly fine with them. Then he is a dragonologist so that could be it. Course even the most boring creature would be dangerous to a wizard or a witch if they didn't know what they were doing. For instance, I'm not going to just walk up to a Hippogriff, that is just asking for trouble. You have to bow first and show respect. Course Hippogriffs aren't rated boring. But for a person scared of slimy things, a Flubberworm isn't going to be a walk in the park for them." Now she had wished that she paid more attention to the 'boring' stuff Charlie talked about whenever he came home. Rather than just the exciting things.

Madrona gave a light chuckle at Victoire's answer, smiling at the girl. "Very good Ms. Weasley, five points to Ravenclaw. What she said is correct, there are 5 different ratings a magical creature can receive after being assessed by a ministry official. Now, personally, I disagree with the lowest rating being called 'boring' as you'll find that even a flobberworm can interest you if you know what to look for. The ratings are as follows: X is considering a 'boring creature, usually harmless to handle, and does not regard any human as something to be threatened by. It can also refer to the mental capacity of the creature, as intelligence plays heavily into the rating level.
"XX is Harmless, similar to 'boring', but the creature with two x's can usually be domesticated by just about any witch or wizard, or even a muggle with a particular aptitude with the handling of animals. Three x's is where things start to get a bit hairy, but the Ministry believes that, in their words, 'competent wizards should be able to cope', which does sum up how the Ministry tends to stand on things. Interestingly enough, 3 x creatures are the creatures most often given rating changes as new information is discovered about them.
"Those three ratings are standard for basic Care classes, and it will be a very rare class when we meet a creature rated four or above. Four is 'Dangerous' and five, as Ms. Weasley correctly stated, is 'Known Wizard Killer'."
She smiled at the students around her. "Any questions?"

Dmitry raised his hand. "How often are creatures reclassified? also how long has the rating system been around?" He was slightly disappointed to hear that they wouldn't be working Dragons. He had heard a lot about the ones used for the tri-wizard cup when it was hosted at this school and he was hoping that they might get to see one up close even if it was a hatching.

"Excellent questions, Mr. Wolfbauer," Madrona praised the dark haired boy. "While reclassifications are rare due to the Ministries extensive range of spellwork that reveals most, if not all, of a creature's abilities, there have been instances in the past where a witch or wizard was either killed or seriously harmed due to a mishandling of a magical creature which called for reevaluation. Even after that, only about 25% of those cases result in a reclassification. The most recent one was in 1932 when a Shelliferous Drogodflikerous gouged out the eyes of a field agent for the Department for the Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures, causing its rating to rise from a 3 to a 4. While the rating system was popularized in the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander, it had been used by the Beast department of the ministry by at least the fifteenth century, following the classification of magical creatures into Beasts, Beings, and Spirits."
"Now I'm sure you're all tired of me droning on so much, so why don't we get into the lesson?"

And again, just a tad late, Horace arrived. He was panting and he looked somewhat disheveled. In fact, he looked a bit roughed up, with his robes all wrinkled and wrung and there seemed to be a sprig of shrubbery entangled in his hair. He took a single moment to catch his breath, then straightened his robes and himself, still oblivious of the state of his hair.
"Ever so sorry miss...there was an accident with...erhm..a stranglevine. Won't happen again."
Again, he wasn't off to the best of starts. And he had hoped to make a good impression this time, especially since this was one of those rare subjects, apart from herbology, he was actually good at.

Max walked on the field with a determined look. A look thatvalways resurfaced when exams where closing in on him. A month before exams his playfull demeanor changed and he started to fully pay attention to his studies. He gave a brif greeting to the students he knew before turning towards the professor.
"I am sorry I am late professor. I was in the library studying transfiguration theory and I lost track of time." Max once agained look over the group and saw a first year gasping for air. 'At least I am not the only one thatvis tardy.' he thought to himself.

Madrona nodded at the two late arrivals, waiting patiently until they had settled in. "I'm glad you two are here, but try not to make tardiness a habit, or you'll miss a lot of important information."
"Now," she said, crossing over to the hutch still sitting innocently off to the side, "this creature is one of my favorites, so I thought it would be suitable for our first class together."
She crouches by the entrance to the basket and reaches in, pulling out a large lizard. Its body stretched the length of her forearm as she held it gently against her torso, though its tail extended several inches past her elbow. She showed the creature to the class, its brilliant pebbled skin reflecting silver and green in every direction. It seemed to flinch at the close examination, and Madrona hissed as it's large claws curled tightly into her arm. Before the class's eyes, the creature began to shrink, curling in on itself until it was only a few inches long total, tucked tightly in the crevasse between Madrona's arm and side. It's tongue flicked out and tasted the air as its eyes flickered back and forth warily.
"This is a moke, a magical creature that was first discovered in Ireland. Its main ability, as you saw, is to shrink at any sign of danger as a defense mechanism, making capturing one extremely difficult. It is quick, sneaky, and bright, subsisting on a diet of insects and the occasional fruit. Our lesson today is a bit of a practical. You will each have the chance to hold him, and try to determine his rating according to the Ministry, and be sure to list your reasoning and be prepared to discuss with the class."

Vic watched as two students showed up, very disrupting but that was not her problem. She wanted to see what creature Professor Pendragon was going to tell them about. She hadn't seen a moke before, only the bag her uncle had. Seeing the creature up close and how gorgeous it looked made her upset that people would kill it just for pouches ad wallets. She liked practicals, got her thinking. That was always a good thing. So she thought about what she knew from seeing her Uncle's pouch shrink around strangers, then seeing the creature in action. And she thought that she had a pretty guess at the rating on the creature. But she kept the fact that witches ad wizards made bags and wallets out of moke skin to herself since she didn't want to upset anyone.

Horace was all attention and wonder for the creature from the moment the Professor took it out of its' cage. He closely studied the different colours, now awed as it shrunk. At the mentioning of the opportunity to hold one, he even got more excited. He was full of questions about this beast already, his hand up in the air, patiently waiting to be acknowledged by the Professor, never taking his eyes off the beast.

Madrona took care to note every student's reaction to her friend, making sure to mark the twitchier ones in her head so she could keep a close eye on their interactions with the creature as the class progressed. She pulled a small container of banana slices out of her pocket and placed it on the table, telling the students to take one for Marco the Moke so he would learn to trust them. She noted Horace's hand waving up in the air and called on him.
"Yes, Mr. Euphorbis?"

'Does he eat all insects, or does he prefer certain kinds? How does he hunt? Is there a specialised technique? Is this a male or a female? And is there any difference between males and females that can be told on sight? Judging the claws, do they climb? What is their preferred habitat? How do they nest?'
He suddenly held a hand in front of his mouth, stopping the veritable waterfall of questions. 'I'm sorry, Professor.' He always did that when he got excited.

Dmitry eyed the small creature in interest. He'd hear about them, read they were prized for there skins. A smile of awe played a crossed his face when he first saw the little thing. He was even more intrigued by the creature when he saw it shrink when it saw the class. He did however in the back of his mind take note about the same time the Ravenclaw 1st year pointed out with his question there was a good chance it could climb. Eying the claws it was probably very adapt it as well. 'Lets not make this little guy mad when you hold it, Ok.' He thought to him self. Beyond that the Color of the Moke was a brilliant silver- green. He could see why someone would use the hide.

Madrona bit back the laugh the bubbled up in her throat at the eager questions that sprung eternal from the first year's mind. It reminded her of herself during her first encounter with a strange creature. "Well, some of those I can answer, but why don't you do some research after class about the rest, and come back to us next class with the results?"
"Let's see, he hunts a lot like many non-magical lizards, using claws and tongue to grab them from their resting places, like on bark or leaves. One trick that he has sometimes used is to shrink down until he's as small as he can go to sneak up on some of the larger bugs, then grows out and attacks, catching them off guard. Marco is a male of his species, you'll find that the females are more silver than he is, and usually have a bit more of a paunch in their bellies. The answer to everything else can be found in the Hogwarts library by a determined researcher." She winked at Horace conspiratorially.
"To introduce yourself to him, hold out your banana slice as I bring him to you, and let him take it from your hand. His claws are more for clinging than gripping, so he'll likely climb onto your hand to eat the whole piece, so be sure to use your non-dominant hand so you can take notes while he eats. Who wants to go first?"

Within parsecs of the Professor's question, the hand of the first years student is in the air already again, this time to volunteer, somehow still making notes with his dominant hand in a small, leatherbound notebook, his gaze switching continually between the Professor and her animal on one side, his notes on the other side.

"Well alright, then," Madrona said merrily, moving over to stand by Horace's side. "Grab a banana like this, no, you'll want your fingers out of the way, he can't always see what's right under his mouth, that's right, now hold still, and breathe, try not to shake too much or he'll get frightened."
She held out her arm and let the moke peer at Horace calculatingly, slowly creeping down her sleeve to pause at the gap between her hand and his. His arm reached out and swiped at the banana, trying to tug it from Horace, but with a light reproach from Madrona, chittered softly and move over to Horace, his claws wrapping around the young boys fingers comfortably to start munching on his treat.

For a moment, one would think Horace was hit by a Petrificus Totalus curse, as he remainded ever so still, his hand and arm extend, holding the slice of banana. He carefully followed the instructions on how to hold the fruit. For a moment, it even appeared he wasn't breathing anymore. Then the moke finally slipped onto Horace's hand and the boy seemed to relax fully, now an oasis of calm and tranquility, his eyes and attention fixed on the creature that was happily munching on the banana. He made ever so soft sounds to calm the creature, studying it up close for every single detail he could soak in. It was almost impossible to hear what he was saying, or chirping, or whatever sound he made under his breath, except for the actual words 'Hello Marco, I am Horace'.

Watching the exchange and taking notes, Dmitry was roughing out a sketch of the creature and trying to describe it's movements. Raising his had both to be the next one and to ask a question. "Professor, is there any size difference between the genders?" He continued scratching out his notes.

"Well, when a creature can change sizes at will, it makes it very difficult to determine gender differences like that. But," she conceded, "a wizard by the name of Jonathan Widnick tried to circumvent this by finding a clutch of moke eggs and measuring the children as they hatch. At least in youth, before they start shifting, there is no difference in size. Horace, be a dear and pass Marco over to one of your classmates, I want everybody to get a chance to see him up close."

'Yes, Professor', he softly answers.
Ever so slowly and carefully, and perhaps a tad reluctant, he passes the creature over to the next classmate, before starting to frantically annotate his notes with findings, observations, questions he needs to ask or research and even a little sketch, which does hold a certain likeness to Marco. Well, safe from the lopsided eye, that is.

Dmitry offered up his hand next. His palm flat, piece of banana in the center. He held his very still waiting for the lizard to walk for Horace's hand to his. Again there was a little hesitation on Marco's part but that could be expected. There were a lot of new sites sounds and smells. "Professor, besides shrinking are there any other known defensive mechanism this creature has?"

"Besides his claws, no. Mokes are not fighters, and due to hunting both from predators and wizarding kind, these creatures spend most of their time hiding. A moke that fights back is a dead moke." Madrona smiles sadly, watching as Marco poked at Dmitry's proffered treat before digging in enthusiastically. She worried about how much food he was going to consume today and resigned herself for his tantrum when he learned that he was going on a diet for a while after this.
Ink twisted in her pocket, as if sensing the sorrow in her voice, and she reached in to soothe him, her fingers brushing along his form.

Chalice wasn't sure if she could attend. She was so excited that she forgot where it was. She was always getting lost. She roamed first one side then te oþer until she remembered the note. She immediately started in the right direction heading down towards the lake. As she arrived her hair was wind blown and full of static. She tried to pull it down to look decent before arriving and had a bit of success. It was laying straight but the ends were still fuzzy.
Chalice mouhed an apology for her tardiness and found a place in the back to hide. At least she didn't trip or anything embarressing.

Vic took in the information that she heard as she wrote her notes. So far this was an interesting class, one of her favorites. Especially with the new information she was getting about mokes. She watched the first year volunteer to hold the creature first. She smiled at his excitement, she remembered her first year and spouting off answers. Now she usually just sat back and waited not wanting to be a know-it-all along with all the other assumptions that people made about her. She saw Dmitry go next, writing down what he asked on her note paper.

As he held it Dmitry watched the little lizard chomp his banana treat. He noted how heavy it felt compared to it size, also noting how his claws wrapped round his fingers. A few moments later he lifted his head looking around for the next volunteer, he could appreciate the chance he'd been given and thought others should be able to enjoy this just as much as he did. As he looked around he noticed the the older Ravencalw girl from Divination sitting next to him scratching down notes. He cleared his throat lightly, "would like to hold him, Miss.....", he couldn't remember her name, but then again after what his weekend had been there was lot that he seem to have to focuses on remembering, not that he had any complaints of course.

Chalice got settled and looked at the Moke. She was so excited to see the new creature and was excited to get a change to hold it. She wondered if her ability to listen and speak with animals included magical creatures. She looked at his length and body. The lizard looking thing looked amazing. She wondered if his scales were smooth or slimy? Were his claws nails or similar to her dog's nails back home? As she looked at the lizard, she decided to try to get it's attention and understand it's feeling. Was it nervous or excited at being around all the kids petting it? How intelligent was it? She had so many questions but since she was late, Chalice knew she had to wait. Or she could ask the Moke.
When it was her turn to hold the lizard, her attention changed. She looked ... happy, excited, and engaged with the new creature. She looked into it's eyes as she was careful to pet the lizard in the way his scales were meant to move. Chalice concentrated while petting it. Perhaps it just took time for her to get a feeling or connection with a magical creature. She spent more time with the creature and another student had to be reminded to give it to the next student. She sighed and gave a shy smile to the next student as she handed it over.
