At 5 o'clock, sitting in her office near the bottom of the Astronomy Tower, Quinn McGriffin perused a floating disk around a foot in diameter. On one side, this disk was a smooth, unblemished mirror. On her side, though, the disk looked more like a window in space. It displayed an image of a richly upholstered sofa, and her family's House Elf, Dergal, stood in front of that sofa with an elfin knapsack. His skin was pale green, with dark eyes like those of his mistress, only bigger, and tall triangular ears reminiscent of a cat. He was dressed in a fine brown tunic and matching trousers, both of which had the look of hand-stitched garments, and he was digging through the knapsack as Quinn listed off various items.
"Do you have the usual emergency pack? The dossier? The extra wand?" Quinn asked, not sharply. "Yes, mistress," was the reply. Dergal's voice was high like that of most elves, but he spoke in unbroken English. "I have also packed the sneakoscope and the miniature secrecy sensor... and some snacks."
His mistress nodded and said "Good man. I'll meet you outside the gates of Hogwarts." Dergal bowed slightly, a simple incline of the head, and disapparated with a small pop. Dergal could apparate into the castle itself, but that was poor etiquette and should only be done in emergencies. Quinn surveyed her own preparations, using the communications mirror as an actual mirror. She was dressed in her usual teaching outfit, with billowing sleeves to hide the wand sheath on her left forearm. That was her redwood wand, the original one she received from Ollivander when she was a child. At the moment she owned three wands, but only carried two regularly; the third was Dergal's (OOC: with Hermione as Head of the DMLE, wand restrictions might be relaxed? Will edit if necessary). Her spare wand, which she had taken from the corpse of a Death Eater she killed during the war, was hidden in her right trouser pocket, which was affected by an Undetectable Extension charm. Around her neck was her amulet, enchanted to the best of her ability to act as a passive shield ala the Weasley twins' fabulous Shield Hats/Gloves/etc. It would protect her for a time from mundane weapons on the order of small-calibre firearms, and from certain hexes cast by the weaker sort of fighting mage, but it was not something to rely on.
Was she likely to be attacked in Hogsmeade? Well, no, not likely at all on a normal day, but there was always a chance that an impostor would arrive at the Three Broomsticks wearing Professor Adamson's appearance, and she would have to be ready to flee or fight. She had her wands, her amulet, a hefty sack of gold in her extended trouser pocket, and her mirror, which she presently shrunk to compact size. Its chain still connected it to her belt loop, and she stuck it in her unenchanted left pocket. Dergal would be carrying the comprehensive emergency kit in case someone was injured, as well as the Dark Detectors. Since it was in Hogsmeade, she could disapparate out of the pub at a moment's notice, so she wasn't particularly worried. She exited the office, breaking down her privacy charms, and made sure it was clear where she was going and how she could be contacted:
The parchment was posted on her office door with a temporary Sticking Charm.
Below the notice, with its own Sticking Charm, was one of her extra communications mirrors. She still hadn't worked out exactly how to connect them all to each other without going through her master mirror, but she had around a dozen that were all connected to hers. One was Dergal's, one she had given to Mary some time ago due to her vampire ancestor's inability to cast a Patronus, and the others were awaiting new owners and new experimentation. This one had anti-theft charms, of course.
With that done, rather than head down towards the Entrance Hall Quinn purposefully strode up the spiral staircase to the very top of the old Astronomy Tower. With a flourish of her wand around her body, she became Disillusioned, and with a small effort of will she became a near-invisible owl. Though it was still day, and rather bright for her nocturnal eyes, one of her few true joys in life was soaring through the sky on silent wings, and she set off towards Hogsmeade and the gates at the edge of the grounds. Dergal was waiting dutifully up a tree near the gates, hidden from casual view. As she approached, she hooted in a specific pattern, and her House Elf replied with a pattern of his own. Well, there was someone who probably wasn't an impostor.
In one smooth motion, the owl grasped Dergal by the shoulders, and the two of them disapparated. The tiny alley behind the Hog's Head was her favorite destination for travel into Hogsmeade, out of the way and close to a friendly haven. Now standing on the ground, Dergal gingerly placed Quinn's owl form next to him, and in an instant she was human again. Without saying a single word, she tapped the little elf on the head with her wand and gave him his own Disillusionment. He seemed resigned, as if it were all quite routine. He took the sneakoscope and his elf-sized secrecy sensor out of his knapsack, and she Disillusioned them as well, in preparation for the meeting. She became an owl again, and they both left the alleyway to move toward the High Street. The Disillusionment was simply to keep from revealing where she preferred to enter the town, to ward off ambushes. A truly persistent assassin would see right through it, but it was never a bad idea to practice operational security. House Elves are naturally inclined to leave no traces, one of their many useful abilities, so no footprints or other marks were left in the camouflaged Dergal's wake.
Once they had reached the center of the town, Quinn removed her own Disillusionment and went about her business, a completely normal customer of the various shops and boutiques that lined the street. She checked at the post office for her large order of Shield garments from the Weasley's in Diagon Alley, but they had been delayed. Suspicious, but there was nothing she could do about it right now. That done, she surreptitiously asked Dergal if he wanted anything from the shops, received a trilling "no" signal from her still-invisible friend, and with renewed purpose she entered the Three Broomsticks. It was half past five, and there was nothing else to be done, so she had time to sit and read the dossier the elf had compiled on this "Dristan Adamson". All public information, of course, with only the barest bit of gossip and hearsay that might speak to hidden truths. While she read, sitting in the corner at the table with the best view of the entrances, she ordered a bottle of firewhiskey. She wanted to be courteous to the aging Rosmerta, but didn't want to drink, so the bottle remained unopened on the table. Perhaps Adamson would have some. Dergal remained Disillusioned, with his secrecy sensor in hand. He was on guard duty while they waited for someone who might possibly be Adamson to arrive.
The Adamsons were publicly wealthy, and she knew from experience that their total hidden wealth was probably rather obscene. Apparently they were hardworking people, though, not like some aristocrats, who simply sat on the Wizengamot and lorded over everyone else for a living. Important work at the Ministry and St. Mungo's, participants in both of the Voldemort wars (on the right side, again unlike some aristocratic families she could mention), they were easy to like as a family. Dristan himself, the eldest son and first in line to inherit the title of Lord Adamson? From public sources, he seemed to take after his father. A competent fighter as early as his Hogwarts days, and a well-liked Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts, despite whatever strange event had lead to his leave of absence this term. Note to self: Could Voldemort's old curse on the position be resurfacing somehow? Must investigate further with Adamson and the Headmistress.
From the reports of his duels and later demonstrations as a Professor, if he did turn violent for some reason, she would have a difficult time subduing him. Her best bet would be a quick flash of disorienting strobed wand-light and tactical Disapparition to flee the scene. If he had somehow set up an anti-Apparition field without her noticing, Dergal could extract her before much real damage was done. If his opener was a Killing Curse? Well, she had practice dodging the curse, so she would just have to trust in her training. Indeed, Dergal would be carrying the secrecy sensor, so she could probe the "Professor" with a few quick opening questions, see if the sensor responded, and act accordingly from there. Yes, she was ready. The time was a quarter past 6, and she settled into her chair to wait for someone with the appearance of her colleague to arrive.

The time was fifteen minutes till seven as the door to The Three Broomsticks opened and Dristan walked in dressed in all black business style suit from a previous meeting before this one. After closing the door behind him he tactfully scans the room first looking for the blonde hair man in a suit and not seeing him Quinn would see his right arm shift a bit and the tip of his wand slide back underneath the sleeve hidden once more. Slowly he turns now and starts to look around remembering what the owl from Quinn had stated what table they would meet at and his eyes fell on Quinn at the table and walked over now his eyes still scanning and his right arm cautiously swaying just in case.
"Good evening Professor McGriffin." Dristan nods in respect to the woman at the table with this being the first time they have met since he was already on leave from Hogwarts before Quinn became the new Professor of Astronomy. Quietly he sits down now and notices the bottle of firewhiskey but for right now let it remain bottled as his eyes looked to Quinn studying the features before him to memory, taking in the entire scene around them got comfortable but yet ready for anything if need be.
"My apologies if I am late but I had another meeting earlier that took longer then expected that sadly I could not leave from." He spoke respectfully. "How is Hogwarts treating you currently Professor?" His demeanor respectful and calm but behind his eyes laid something dark but contained and something he would only allow out when it was appropriate.

Quinn had her redwood wand out, pretending to idly poke and prod at her enchanted mirror, pretending to be deep in contemplation. After some minutes of this, Dergal squeezed her left knee with his small, camouflaged hand. It was time. Her eyes swept casually around the room, hesitating momentarily on the entrant, and she was a little amused to see the sharply-dressed man doing the same exact thing, complete with surreptitiously drawn wand. Kindred spirits, perhaps? As he approached, she lifted herself from the table and returned his nod with a shallow bow.
"And to you, Professor Adamson."
For a few moments, once again her calculating eyes and his were simultaneous, each of them intent on the other, before the Defense Professor seemed to (or perhaps pretended to) relax, and she sat down with him. She smiled broadly, knowing that it didn't quite hide the calculating glint in her eyes, but perhaps it would help to put him at ease. Her wand hadn't left her hand, and the mirror was lying cloudy on the table in front of her as she responded, "My responsibilities in preparing the students for their O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s in Astronomy have taken up much of my time. I have only now begun to look forward, to what needs to be done in the fall..." Her face grew more serious. "Let us talk of Dueling, Professor, and Battle. Later, perhaps, I also want to ask you certain questions about your politics, but that is less necessary."
With a wave of her wand, Quinn conjured up a few static illusory figures, rising from the mist within the clouded surface of her mirror. One was a female mage in red-trimmed robes, alluding to Gryffindor, and wand raised to fight. Separate from her, a trio of aurors (female, male, female) in their distinctive coats faced in three different directions, each watching the others' backs. "This is my basic contention, sir: the difference between a sole duelist, even the strongest of her age, and a group who have trained to keep each other alive. There is much focus on intra-House teamwork at Hogwarts, competing for the Quidditch Cup and the House Cup, and many students are of course powerful duelists in their own right. Given the competence of their Defense Professor, how could they not be?" She gave him something of a sly grin.
"By combining the instinct towards teamwork with the instinct towards combat, together we could teach the student body of Hogwarts how to operate as a real fighting force, and I have no doubt they would excel. Tactics training, war games, competition between groups and cooperation as a whole against illusory outside enemies and all manner of interesting scenarios. Not only would the children have fun working together towards common goals, but if, stars forbid, they found themselves in another war, they would already have the skills to fight together. That's the spiel, anyway." Quinn raised her eyebrow and waited for Adamson's response.

Dristan sat across from Quinn very quietly and seemed to be relaxed and listened to every single word that was spoken right now. His eyes turning to the mirror and watching illusionary figures and never moved from how he was sitting. Her words were starting to make sense to him. Concern was there sure but he kept that hidden because he wanted to hear as much as he could from Quinn right now. "I understand where you are coming from. I too carry such a battle scar to this day from the Battle of Hogwarts so thus why my interest with this is peaked for I never wish the horrors and death I witnessed as a seventh year upon any of our students." He spoke directly.
"The students are very capable of defending themselves yes but more training is always needed because quite honestly you never know what kind of situation they could be a part of but.....you have to remember one thing. Hogwarts has focused more on dueling so with that said what you are proposing would a be large change to say it best. I can honestly see this as a great lesson and training to prepare them yes but the way to approach it must be handled with a delicate hand, some parents may not desire their child to be involved and we have to take that into consideration.
A waiter came by to ask Dristan if he needed anything and he just shook his head no never taking his eyes off of Quinn. "We also have to make sure that we are not seen for lack of a better word looking like we are forming and training an army. That could cause a lot of problems in the upper echelons." He shifted finally and leaned forward a bit. "I like what I am hearing from you. We need to figure out how to approach this without chaos ensuing. For example currently within my house I have a transfer student from Durmstrang that will be my dueling captain for my house that is exceptional and a natural leader and this would be right up his alley. Then there is the trace as well if you are looking at doing training during the summer. Special requests will have to be made for certain due to magic restrictions of students." Speaking truthfully once more.
"And you stated you had question in regards to my politics. By all means ask them." His body remained alert and his eyes every once in a while watched people moving about.

Quinn nodded at appropriate moments as the Defense Professor spoke. He was a Slytherin, at that, concerned with the fallout the plan could unleash upon the school. Political fallout. How to spin it to the toadies at the Ministry? How to spin it to the parents? Could they get some of the high-profile celebrities of the last war to speak up in favor? Now, there's an idea...
At the mention of politics, it seemed natural for her to speak up, and she did so animatedly. "You are very right, Professor. Quite so, on all counts! That is why I am here, so that we may plan and determine the specifics together. I will leave aside our personal politics for now, if you don't mind. So, here is one thought I have: the influence of Granger and Potter at the Ministry has changed quite a few things, has it not? Our government is certainly not what it was in '95, to say the least. Being central figures of the war, parents of Hogwarts students and very respected in this country, do you think we could implore those two for support of the project? I am connected to them in a small way, having worked as a tutor for some of their children, but I cannot say I have their ear or any such thing. If we could gain their support, though, the problem of chaos ensuing would be alleviated."
She thought about it for a moment. "We determine the best way to portray the idea to Potter and Granger, Longbottom or any other high-profile veterans of the war who will speak with us. Remind them of the work done in Dumbledore's Army at Hogwarts, how when combined with a competent Defense Professor such as yourself in addition to the input of war heroes such as themselves, the training would be all the more insightful. Work with the Auror Office, and spin the project to the parents as a direct training program for those who want to gain the prestige of working under Potter in that office. Show that we are not revolting against the Ministry, but working to strengthen it from the ground up. If we could get an official stamp of approval on this, oh, the possibilities..." Quinn looked sidelong back at Adamson. "Thoughts?"

Dristan sat back a bit and his mind went into deep very deep thought now as he took everything Quinn had just stated and let the wheels in head begin to turn. "Indeed I personally went to school with Miss Granger and Mr. Potter when I was younger and helped them at the Battle of Hogwarts. My father currently works alongside the both of them at the Ministry as a Hitwizard so...." He had to pause to let his mind formulate a bit more. "I could have a word with them a meeting with the both of them. Speak to them about this after we have all the specifics because I feel they would have a lot of questions that would need to be answered. Does that mean they would be on board honestly I do not know. It would be a worthy try but in the end I do know that they like you stated have children at Hogwarts and I know they both are also trying to live normal lives and not just be known as veterans."
This was a lot to take in already for him with his plate already being full and for him to take this one with Quinn would require a lot of time to say the least and time away from Teagan who was pregnant with his child. "If I accept and help you with this you must understand first that my plate is very full already. I am soon to be wed in the spring and my fiancee is pregnant with our child. I am currently foster a very beautiful eleven year old little girl from America that will be getting her acceptance letter for Ilvermorny this summer. Plus being a professor which entails a lot of time and effort not to mention that I have now been formally given the title of Lord Adamson for my family and have become the Patriarch of my family and all their business dealings and I want to be very upfront with you." He glanced for a moment at a man that was looking at him and the man just simply smiled and passed out and Dristan sighed because definitely the man had too many spirits.
"I love the idea I truly do and I definitely want to put forth the correct effort in this but I also have to find a balance. So before I accept I need to know and understand all the specifics. What are your ideas for training. How you plan to execute the creation of the Hogwarts Battle League and most importantly you will need funding for such a cause. I can definitely help in the financial department with no issue. And it would take several and I mean several meetings with not just Granger and Potter but others as well that were there at the battle and others during the war that are still alive. This will take time to get off the ground if we get the proper backing."
Dristan glanced down at her wand out and looked right back at Quinn. "How about we do this....first you might want to put your wand away. People might get the wrong impression with you having it out and such. For example.....it is making me feel uncomfortable because of who I am." He was not being mean or anything but with his training and having her wand out like that rather unsettled him.

Quinn smiled once again, her eyes glinting. "My dear Professor, I mean you no harm, of course. My wand is merely out to engage with the illusions and provide you with the necessary visual aids. We won't be able to work together if we can't trust each other, hmm?" She felt a warning squeeze on her knee. She was setting off the secrecy sensor. Oh, well. "As for time, we have all summer! Surely that will be enough. And we're both independently wealthy, my Lord, so funding will be no issue at all, indeed." She pointedly ignored the comments about her colleague having a lot on his plate. This was about the future of the nation, after all. What could be more important? As she spoke, she did indeed create a great number of illusions from her mirror, visualizing everything she said in one way or another. She really did want him to trust her, after all.
"Now, I will collect my thoughts and detail the project to you as specifically as I can:
- First, starting now and over the summer, we build political support and a roster of people who will help us to train the students. Modify the plan to meet the specifications of the war heroes, spin the eventual project to look either like a new sports league that will happen to help prepare students for future combat OR if we can manage to gain that stamp of approval, spin it as a fully-endorsed pre-Auror training program. Or spin it as both, each to different crowds. By the way, when you go before Potter and Granger, could you deign to bring me along?
- Second, in September, we will determine how many students are interested. I'm sure some of those who will be in your revived Dueling Club will also wish to join the Battle League, and those who want to get a headstart on Auror training, and so on. Probably more older students than younger, but we shall see. We don't need large numbers, but they would allow for larger, more spectacular battle scenarios. I'm hoping that the students will look at the physical exercise and competition of the League and see it as another sport, one with fewer rules and room for more participants than Quidditch. While they are enjoying this "sport", they might perhaps learn something that will keep them alive later in life. That's one way to sell it to them, anyway.
- Third, once we know how many will participate, we will divide them into roughly equal divisions. Perhaps two? Or three, if we have the numbers? The most promising older students will be granted command of these divisions, taking whatever official title they wish. The Dueling Captain you mentioned, for example, might make a strong leader, and perhaps others. Victoire Weasley? We would need to come up with a list and determine who would be best suited to the positions. The students in each division will be allowed to name themselves, devise uniforms and insignias, determine their own command structure, and otherwise conduct themselves with autonomy. They will be both in direct competition with each other and working together as a tripartite army throughout the year.
- Fourth, at the moment I'm thinking we'll have two types of League meetings: training (both division and full), and battle scenarios. Probably training on one or two days during the week, and scenarios on the weekends. The students will also be able to meet with each other outside of the official meetings to train, of course. Training will entail the efforts of myself, yourself, one of our other co-sponsors or a guest from outside the school who has a specific hard-won lesson to impart. We will explain historical battles both magical and mundane, what resources each side had access to, how they used those resources, and what outside factors contributed to the cessation or continuation of the conflict. We will propose questions to them, on the order of "If you were commanding this many troops, and had these resources, how would you achieve your goals?" All of us have practical experience in battle, wisdom to impart that could have saved people we knew. As an academic with experience in war, I can teach them about the great war theorists: Sun Tzu, Slytherin, Tacticus, Grindelwald. Where their wisdom applies, and where it doesn't. With your knowledge of Dark magic, you would be invaluable in explaining how small-scale Dark creatures and curses can be used against us when extrapolated out into the scale of an army. If we could get Potter or Granger themselves to come and talk about how things are done in the modern Auror Office and DMLE, that would be golden...
So, those parts would be theory, and maybe only interesting to the older students. The other aspect of training would be practical, having us and their officers run them around and train them to work together. How they train will be part of the competition, so in this case I believe we just need someone there for safety, and to correct them if they make truly dangerous mistakes or egregious errors in reasoning. You could tell me otherwise. Learning how to learn is always important, and allowing them to make mistakes on that front could be helpful in teaching them how to catch themselves doing so.
- Fifth, that brings me to the battle scenarios. These will be the big highlight of the League, the "fun" part, or more correctly the part where all of the students' training is put into play. Through the use of illusions, constructs with temporary animating enchantments, and the divisions themselves, you and I and our other co-sponsors will put together a combat scenario, and the students will have to work together or against each other to complete it. These as well will be split in two, and the two types will be intimately connected. My thought is this, for three weekends of the month we will have division vs. division scenarios. They will fight in different places, non-forbidden forest, on broomsticks, in closed-off sections of the castle, etc. The divisions will compete against each other, develop their tactical skills in a simulation of real combat against real enemies (represented by the other divisions). At the end of each of these, one division will be crowned victorious.
Crucially, after every set of three division scenarios we will put on an army scenario. Whichever division was more successful in the preceding three scenarios will be put in command of ALL of the divisions, and together all of the students will be made to fight against a large outside enemy simulated by us. They will have to put aside their differences and work together to complete these combats, and it will be entirely possible for them to fail. If they succeed in defeating whatever great evil we devised for them to fight, we will have an end-of-the-month celebration for the entire Battle League. If they fail, we will instead have a funeral for those hypothetical people who were lost in the ensuing darkness. This would probably not go over well politically, but I had the thought that we could collect things from the students, things that they own, to represent something they have to protect. If they succeed as an army, these things are returned to them. If they fail, we destroy what they wanted to protect... I think that could have quite an effect on their motivation, don't you?
Anyway, this will continue along to the very end of the year, when we will have a final exam-style "Capstone Scenario", with more difficulty and greater stakes than any of the others. I'm thinking it will involve an entire weekend, with multiple combats one after the other. Their performance in that will color the entire final week of the year, but it should bring them just a little bit closer to understanding what it's like in the real world."
She thought about it for a good long moment, and said "That's the basic outline, for now. Do you think it could sell?"

Dristan just sat there letting every single word sink into his brain and was completely silent, no emotion no nothing to show Quinn whether he was excited or did not like this at all. This was insane to say the least. The time, the energy, the drastic change of it all was insane. A good idea maybe but as it was presented..this was going to be a very long meeting and he knew Teagan was not going to be happy at all with him not being home again when he said he would be and he would have to deal with that aftermath later tonight with her. "You must forgive me about your wand. Just makes me uncomfortable is all. Yes you are using it for the illusions and I understand that the last person person that pointed a wand in my direction it was a bad moment." He spoke truthfully remembering what transpired between himself and Dmitry in the great hall before he was relieved for the summer.
"So lets break this all down because I can already tell you there are some I can agree with and others I do not. So perhaps compromises can be made.
-(One)We can not spin anything to the Ministry. We have to be very up front with them. I recommend this as a strictly volunteer option at the school for 6th years and 7ths no lower. The ramifications of 5th years and below if they get hurt is not something that I would want any of us to deal with. Yes in a war situation that type of mentality is out the window but you have to understand that we are not at war right now and we have no justification for having anyone younger then 16 to even be a part of this right now. You and I can definitely go speak to Granger and Potter but I am telling you right now do not be surprised if they flat out say no to this right out of the gate.
-(Two)Again make this strictly volunteer as are the Dueling Clubs and Quidditch when we come back in September. And again 6th and 7th years only. No one younger. As far as this be a part of an auror style training we would have to speak with Granger about that because right now we already have in place what we need to assign students once it is time to become aurors and the Ministry take care of them after we recommend. Also if you wish to make this like quidditch as you state Not only are we going to have to speak to the Ministry but also Department of Magical Games and Sports.
-(Three)In regards to the division and team setup that can be addressed at a later time because we are going to be very busy trying to make this work.
-(Four)I feel the training schedule needs to be more negotiable because of studies, and other activities the students are doing not to mention any of the sponsors and what they have on their plates. With me stating this you have to understand Quinn that people can not just drop what they are doing or plans or any of the sort. You want this to work, you have to be able to understand outside things that could effect scheduling. Now theory itself definitely a great tool and the people you spoke of I am alright with save Grindelwald. He was a very dark wizard and it is in my opinion that we should not teach anything of his to the students. It would be like teaching something that Voldemorte himself used as tactics and that is a definite no go and will get us shut down before even starting.
-(Five)Again I bring up the conflict of scheduling for the three weekends a month. I strongly feel that is not going to work. Perhaps starting with one weekend a month and the battle scenarios if approved would have to have safety as paramount. We can not have any student harmed or worse. I understand the idea of constructs and also illusions created safety measures need to not only be implemented but also thoroughly monitored. And I will tell you now the Headmistress will not approve the castle for use at all.
Dristan now pauses and waves for a waiter and requests a bottle of bourbon and a glass. Not a moment later it was brought to him and he poured a glass and taking a drink. “Now I understand the army scenario you are saying but having them go through a mock funeral might not be a good idea. Some students it could scar. I get you want to prepare them but you have to understand each student is unique physically and mentally. Hypothetical…..get have a student that is great at the physical aspect and in the end they lose the scenario and we do a mock funeral and mentally it screws them up so bad that now we have another problem on our hands.” He spoke as he took another drink.
“As far as the Capstone goes we can see how everything else goes with our discussions and also meetings and such before we go fully on with that part.” Finishing his glass he poured again. “Do I think it could sell? I do not rightfully know. There are so many what ifs, so many factors that we would have to break apart and look at it further. Your idea is a grand idea and a huge game changer in regards to Hogwarts and its students. But allow me to say this so you know where I am coming from and please do not take offense to this. We are not Durmstrang. We are Hogwarts. Durmstrang is more militaristic. If you truly wish for your dream of this to work you have to be open to compromise, scheduling, parental concerns, staff concerns, students themselves. Something like this needs a delicate hand to say the least to even get it off the ground and if you want the support you are looking for you can not be pushy at all about this and be willing to listen openly to others and if you do that Quinn I have a feeling your vision could work like you want it to.”

Now we're talking! Adamson was proving a useful litmus test for what others would say. Quinn wondered how much he would budge on some of his points. She could extrapolate that out to see how much effort the whole thing would take to get going. It was time to probe.
"Yes, the delicate hand, a web of compromises. A case must be built, piece by piece, until it sounds so reasonable they can't possibly refuse. I thank you for your arguments! Not even Durmstrang has such a grand tactical tradition, they are all so focused on individual power and glory. We are going to be teaching teamwork and cleverness here, not militarism.
Also, I must say, I thought that as a Slytherin you would be all for the political game. It needs to be explained to the students, to the parents and to the Ministry, and each of those groups have different concerns. The only way anything will ever get done is by emphasizing the best parts relative to each group. That isn't such an unreasonable concept, is it? You know that the League will be good for the students... Why else are you even at Hogwarts, teaching your class? Do you really think that every single one of your students will face all of the Dark magic you teach them about? This is one more way of preparing them for the world they might face as adults, and if that is true, there's no reason not to make it look as attractive as possible to all of the concerned parties.
- As for your concern over injury to students... Have things changed that much at Hogwarts? When I was a girl, getting hit by a bludger and falling a hundred feet from your broom was a regular Thursday night. You know those things are solid iron, right? Dueling and Quidditch both are far more dangerous than their muggle counterparts, sport fencing and football, and the former pair have been ensconced at Hogwarts for centuries! Healing magic is so overwhelmingly effective, it's hard for anyone to be permanently injured by anything...
Getting hit by a stunner as part of a mock battle is much less of an impact than a hit from a good beater, is all I'm saying. If you're that worried about safety, you should be campaigning for Quidditch to be 6th and 7th years only. I can understand restricting the League to the very youngest, they don't have the magical power to participate effectively, but the students would be better served by drawing the line at 4th year and above instead. If we let 4th and 5th years get smashed in the face by cast-iron cannonballs for nothing more than bragging rights, we should also let them in on the sport that will actually help them survive as adults.
- As for the League being voluntary, well, of course it would be. Like you say, Quidditch is voluntary, as is the Dueling Club. It's an idea for an extracurricular organization, not a core class. Just because it's the most interesting and useful extracurricular the students could choose doesn't mean I want it to be mandatory, it should draw participants all on its own. It hits such a sweet spot of individual skill and achievement, teamwork, intellect, courage and cleverness that we should get students from all four Houses flocking to be a part of it. And the best part is, it doesn't have to be so small and limited as the Quidditch teams. We can take as many as are willing to participate! Oh, the advantages it has over Quidditch especially just go on and on...
- That brings me to your next point, negotiability of scheduling. Obviously I will be able to run meetings and scenarios without input from any co-sponsors, if they aren't available. If I couldn't handle that much, I wouldn't even be at Hogwarts in the first place. And, just like any extracurricular, the students will be free to skip any practices, training sessions or scenarios they wish. All it will do is make their division and the total army weaker, and that is realistic. Real armies have layabouts and lazy members as well. Point of fact, how many non-negotiable training sessions do the Quidditch teams have every week? How many non-negotiable matches each month? The Battle League will be far more negotiable than that venerable institution, to be frank. Two one-hour-long training sessions during the week, one two-hour or less battle scenario each weekend, and perhaps a three-hour battle scenario at the end of each month. That is far less time than I remember the Quidditch teams taking to practice and play their silly game, at least when I was at the school. I doubt much has changed.
- Now, where I agree with you the most is the mock funerals. It is important to motivate the students, but that could most certainly lead to unintended consequences. I am more than willing to excise it from the plan. And, of course, the exact list of battle theorists will have to be edited to appease the Ministry. I didn't think you'd agree about teaching Grindelwald, despite his tactical genius. No one seems to remember the neutral qualities Dark Lords and Ladies have had, just their evil qualities. It's a shame."
The entire time the two of them have been talking, Quinn has continued to create illusory visualizations (bludger smashing into a student's face, students skipping training sessions, etc.). She seems quite excitable, and every time she mentions Quidditch there is audible disgust in her voice.

Dristan twitched a bit and then a dark smile crept over his lips. Oh now this was going to get very interesting as he stared at the bourbon in his glass and slammed it down his throat with ease and placed the glass down on the table and made a motion with his right wrist causing his wand to launch into his hand and he placed it on the table and himself turned and leaned forward now and those emerald eyes were a lot duller right now as he glared at Quinn. "Okay.....allow me to introduce myself. I am the wrong guy to screw with and be disrespected!" Dristan voice was cold, and very commanding and direct. "So if you want my support in this you are really going about it the wrong way by questioning my position as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and the icing of this cake my heritage!" He darkly smiles now and his eyes showing just how much anger was seething from him right now.
"Now.....I will not sit here and be questioned by anyone on how I treat my students because I assure you number one there are more than several students I have taught that would make you quake because what I have taught them. One in particular that has my absolute respect because he stood toe to toe with me and survived. Number two those students are my life. If any of them ever got hurt whoever hurt them would deal with me personally without remorse or so much care in the world because I would make them suffer and beg for death by the end." Dristan paused and popped his neck.
"Number three....You think you can call me out because I do not act like a Slytherin. My entire family is Slytherin all the way back to our progenitor. So for you to even sit here and say what you just did is a direct slap to my lineage and if you were any other person besides a professor I would truly show you just how much of the snake I have in my blood. So final warning! Do not cross me or at anytime ever again disrespect my family, my students or me." Now he leans back now and adjusts his coat and keeps glaring.
"Back to what we were speaking about. Quidditch is a sport. You are right players get hurt but never death. This battle league can get someone killed. You need to stop pushing so hard with this agenda and actually for lack of a better word pull the wand out of your backside and come off your high horse that you are on. Even with the constructs spells can rebound and if a hex or curse hits a student just right then game over." Dristan refilled his glass and slammed it down his throat again still reeling from his anger.
"Also what you are telling me is that because people have lives and plans that despite the fact they would miss a session that you feel they would become weaker. And you obviously are so set in this mindset of all of this you are definitely not seeing the bigger picture. So let me be very blunt with you. It is one thing to teach and even prepare them for a possibility that could happen but the way you are coming at me right now I assure you right here and now you will get a solid no from everyone unless you really re-evaluate your stance and actually back the hell down a bit. If not well then...."
He leans forward once more. "I mean listen to yourself a moment and this is your exact words......No one seems to remember the neutral qualities Dark Lords and Ladies have had, just their evil qualities. It's a shame." Dristan paused to let that sink in. "They were Dark Lords and Ladies for a freakin reason. So now here is my question to you Quinn. Exactly why are you so hell bent about this?" Dristan chuckled a bit because of something that came to his memory. "And by the way my family is all Slytherin but me I was a very proud Gryffindor."

As Dristan placed his wand on the table, Quinn extended the forefinger of her left hand, hidden in her lap, and tapped her left leg twice with her forefinger. Dergal squeezed her knee twice in response. He was ready to extract at a moment's notice. Her right hand gripped her wand tighter, keeping its angle within a single flick of the angry mage across the table. Oh, well, that was quite a reaction to the probing. High-strung, doesn't like being challenged. Well, I don't either, there's something we have in common. I think it's time to give a brief explanation, and then to lose. I'm going to have to update my estimates on the difficulty of this project, again. Quinn gave an internal sigh, leaving her face neutral in the wake of Dristan's anger. She hated losing, even if it was to further eventual plans. She really needed to work on that. "My dear Professor," she began evenly, "I hoped that we would be kindred spirits, and I was wrong. I apologize. What drives me so? 80 years ago, we weren't ready for Grindelwald. 40 years ago, we weren't ready for Voldemort. 20 years ago, we still weren't ready for Voldemort. In all of these wars, we had to rely on destined heroes to save us. What happens when we have no destined heroes in the next war? When we face a truly intelligent, humble Dark Lord, and he succeeds in killing the destined hero in childhood where Voldemort failed? From what I have heard of the story, all Voldemort needed to do was send his servant Black to the Potter house with a knife, and Britain would have fallen in 1981. We would still be living in that Britain, if he had been smart and humble. You say that you carry scars from the Battle of Hogwarts, and this is what stirred my hope that you would see the necessity as I do. The scars I carry from the war of Voldemort's return have given me cause to prepare the nation, and at some future point, prepare the world. Prepare them for battle with this intelligent Dark Lord, for he or she will rise. It is only a matter of time. Naturally, to enact this I have first come to Hogwarts. Hogwarts is the very soul of Britain, and over the next generations, through Hogwarts the nation can be molded, made to prepare itself where it has not ever before. This preparation is my every waking moment. So, yes, it is important to me. As important, perhaps, as your fiancé, your unborn child and your students are to you. This country and this world are too precious to waste a single second in trying to save them." She grew sad, and her face became drawn, as she stared into Dristan's eyes. She reminded herself to shore up her Occlumency barriers. Losing was mentally tricky, and someone like Adamson was almost certainly a Legilimens. "More important, however, is my respect for liberty. If I become a tyrant myself, who have I saved? I am a Gryffindor from a long line of Slytherins myself, sir. I had family among the Death Eaters. I know how difficult it is to do the right thing for the right reasons. I am truly contrite, here, today. What should I do, Lord Adamson? Where should I go to accomplish what I seek?" -- (OOC: I think Dristan is demonstrably incorrect about the danger of mock combat compared to Quidditch. There is nothing stopping someone hit with a bludger from dying of a brain hemorrhage, or getting a fatal spinal cord injury from falling several stories to the pitch. One wrong move and a promising student is dead. This doesn't happen because the medical facilities at Hogwarts and St. Mungo's are ridiculously robust. This concept is no more dangerous than Quidditch or Dueling Clubs.)

Dristan grabs his wand and locks it back to the mechanism under his right sleeve and it vanishes under his coat once more and sighs. He looks at the bottle of firewhiskey and stands up now and walks over to the bar and grabs two fresh glasses and returns with them. Definitely needed firewhiskey now. He pops the bottle and pours Quinn a glass and one for himself. "It seems you and I are definitely kindred spirits." Dristan whispers still very angry as he take a drink and lets it flow down his throat.
"Let me give you a bit of advice. No matter how much training any of us do we will never be ready for the likes of the Dark ones plain and simple. That was proven time and time again. Your passion for the nation is more than warranted. But you are going about it all wrong. You care about the nation more than anything. Then listen to what I am about to tell you Quinn. I too had a problem five years ago that fire you have right now well mine was driven by revenge. I did not care about others. I did not care what I had to do to see it to its end. Then......." Dristan paused and took another drink.
"Then a certain woman entered the picture and she actually works at Hogwarts, our Muggles Studies and Vampire 101 professor. She helped me see the path I was going down would have destroyed not just myself but everything I cared about. And that is what I see with you right now. Your passion right now will cause nothing more than pain and destruction. So I am going to help you like Mary did for me." He returned to his chair now and sat back down.
"You love this nation yes? Then take the summer to get to know her again, not just the nation itself but its people...muggle and magical and even the magical creatures that inhabit it. Listen to their songs, their stories get to know them on a personal level. Make friends, make allies and establish yourself here at Hogwarts with the students. You do that I know you will understand what I am speaking about and in the end your vision that drives your passion will come to fruition."
Dristan finishes his glass and pours more. "If you want I will be right by your side every step of the way as she was for me." He raises his glass a bit to her.

Quinn put on an air of deep, conflicted contemplation, looking down at her lap like a good little servant before her Lord. She really did have a good bit to think about. How was she going to respond? This meeting, and especially that "advice" had been quite eye-opening.
After a moment, it was fairly obvious. It was going to be a long summer, but there was nothing for it. The petty little mage in front of her needed to keep thinking he had won, if she wanted him as an ally. Through her next train of thought, she had to work to keep herself from looking openly angry, though a bit of internal conflict would be appropriate to the moment, so she didn't have to hide it that much. "We will never be ready," what nihilistic horseshit. Does he teach the students that they should close their eyes and wish in the face of danger, waiting for bloody Harry Potter to save them? You can't keep some people from marching proudly to their own ruin, but stars above, I wish they wouldn't take so many innocents with them.
What would old Mad-Eye say? He'd probably smack Adamson over the head with his staff and dare the man to retaliate. Speaking of, let's not forget, he thinks he can lecture me about loving the people, when he was threatening me with painful death not ten minutes ago! I have more love for the world in my little finger than this idiot has felt in his entire life. No sense of scale, just like the rest of them. Even if he has quenched the revenge of his past he spoke of, all he can think about now is his precious little family, his coddled students, he cares nothing for the world beyond his bubble... He swears vengeances on those who threaten that bubble. I swear them on those who threaten us all. That is why we are most certainly not kindred spirits, but I won't push that point again. He's powerful. Better to let him think he has won, indeed. She almost wished she was a Dark Lady, so she could simply kill the man and take over his position at Hogwarts immediately. It would certainly be expedient, and as the Defense Professor she would have an easier time pushing her agenda at the school. I need to think about it more realistically, no killing. He's easily riled. I don't have to kill him, I can just provoke him, get him fired from his post for assaulting a fellow professor. Better yet, trick him into assaulting a student. It isn't like he needs the job, he's rolling in money... Maybe I'll pull it off in a couple of years, once I'm in better graces with the Headmistress. Yes, patience is key when dealing with powerful idiots. Patience and losing. Besides, if I actually do come to some sort of profound self-realization while I'm letting him win, it will be two birds with one stone. And alternatively, I just might win him to the cause. From powerful idiot to powerful ally? He would certainly be too useful to just throw away.
She wrenched herself out of her own thoughts, and looked up, speaking with careful faltering and weakness. "If... If you are willing to help me in this way, Professor, I can do naught but accept. You are very gracious." Laying it on too thick, reel it back, reel it back. She rallied a little, gaining a bit of the confidence she was displaying earlier.
"By that I mean, perhaps my focus on the dangers of the future have blinded me to the pleasures of the present. My party at Midsummer might be only a token effort. I will speak to Mary about it, and I would be happy to host you and your family in a less... formal circumstance. I could take you both on a tour around Cambridge, perhaps? I have a part-time position there, when I'm not busy with other things. The way the mundane world works is so fascinating, I'm sure you would enjoy it, and feel free to invite anyone else you please!"
You've played long games before, Quinn. This will be no different.

Dristan stands and placed down the galleons for the drinks and nods. "I will take your invite into consideration. You have a lot to think about Quinn. I am just an owl away if you wish to talk. Until then I need to get home." With that he turned and headed out of The Three Broomsticks and headed home.

Yes, a curt-but-polite dismissal. He is done with me, as I am only weakness in his mind. Good. I think I have lost perfectly. Oh, my dear Professor, you have no idea the things I have to think about... Go and play with your little family, have fun with your money and your power. I may be pretending to like you now, but you are part of the problem of this world, Lord Adamson, and I will fix you in the end.
Quinn smiled at the swiftly-departing Defense Professor, thinking of the fate of the world. She had a new long-term plan in place, which was nice. The Battle League had continued to meet with much more resistance than she expected, but then again, she was being overly optimistic in the first place. Inertia is a powerful force, even when you tell them that you'll do all the work yourself and they won't have to lift a finger. I have to pick my battles, as always. Getting in good with the faculty and the Headmistress will make everything that much easier. Perhaps I should also try being social with Granger and the other war heroes, at least enough to gauge them. Hrm. I'll talk to Victoire, maybe send an owl to Bill. The Weasleys are always having family gatherings. Yes, this sociability plan will be much easier than the other undercover work I've done. I just have to be nice to people. As it goes forward, setting up life-threatening situations for my potential allies to be saved from might be expedient, but such things have to be done carefully...
She left the Three Broomsticks not long after Adamson, and went through the routine of Disillusionment --> Owl --> Disapparition, returning with Dergal to the spot in the tree near the castle gates. After commending and thanking her House Elf, Dergal returned to Belfast and Quinn flew as a near-invisible owl back to the top of the Astronomy Tower.
New plots were always mentally draining, and she got to the tedious process of creating her mental list of all the friendships it would be prudent to include in this one. Relative political power, relative power over Hogwarts and relative ability to affect Quinn's own purposes. This was going to be a long summer, indeed...
