Hi I'm going to be making a vampire for game. One that is quite old, and was in torpor during the Voldemort incident. I'd love to have one or more current wizards to be one of her descendants I'm happy to start a conversation to that end with anyone interested Morte

Hmm, depends. Got any wizarding blood in your family tree?

If it's allowed, that was the plan.
Wizards can be embraced, so I figured, if there was interest, my char could've originally been a wizard, who'd had a family, and been embraced in later years, and watched her family grow and die, and grow, and die, then distanced herself to avoid that pain, now after a torpor stint she's looking them up again :)
I'm still working out her details, so now's the time to speak up :)

It is true, Wizards can be turned, they gain immortality and new powers and lose their wizarding powers totally possible got ties in a pure blooded wizarding family.

Hmmmmmm... Lorelei's status of being Muggleborn is terribly important to her. If she has any wizarding ancestors, she certainly doesn't want to know about them. ...However, having read between the lines of what Binns teaches about the Second Wizarding War, she IS interested in procuring a still-living(ish) witch "ancestor" whom she could claim if, somehow, Muggleborn Registration ever reared its ugly head again. You know, as insurance. So tell me, ancient vampire - OTHER THAN BECOMING BLOOD-BONDED, what could a 12-year-old witch offer you so that you'd agree to "claim" her as a descendant if they ever started persecuting Muggleborns again? (*pokes Erin* if YOU wanted her as an ancestor, that could be how we meet, lol. Only if you want though!)

Blood bonding isn't necessary, dear child. I'm sure there are plenty of magical oaths which would work if we ever needed to go down that path :) For now, a little blood, now and then, would be most beneficial. After all, I'm old, and there is much work for old professors to do around the castle, other than heading out in the depths of the night (especially in winter!) to feed!
and, of course, you'd have to endeavour to do extra well in your studies! :)
now ... what am I teaching again? Was it potions? Or muggle history? Hmm.... :)
*laughs*
*looks around for Erin* do you want a great great great... um, whatever, ... grandmother? :)

*sniffs as only a Slytherin can* I always do extra well in my studies.
(Might have to be Muggle Studies, though! Potions requires wandwork, which vampires can't do.)

potions can be done without wand work if the professor has an assistant. Its mostly alchemy.

I think that would be really confusing for students, especially ones who are already struggling with the subject. I could see a vampire making a potion with someone else's help, but teaching it requires both an expertise that someone who hasn't been able to use a wand in centuries is unlikely to have, as well as the ability to clearly explain and demonstrate each step without switching from one person to another.
I'm actually just about to post some ideas on this very topic in the ooc forum, though! Gimme a sec!

Re: Shared Ancestry A link to Erin Thi Cao would be perfectly acceptable to me. Erin's mother is Witch Ailis Kestrel, who takes her surname from the Kenmare Kestrels (the quidditch team). The team was founded in 1291, and the team founder had the surname Kestrel, which was passed to their descendants. (Whether the founder took a new surname from the team or named the team after themself is a matter of debate within the Kestrel clan; everyone has a theory whilst in their cups and it's all very pleasantly combative.) The Kestrels have been a variety of houses over their time, but Ailis was a Ravenclaw and Erin is a Hufflepuff. The Kestrels are also fiercely protective of each other and are fond of their little half-blood niece, no matter who her father is. They are pretty open-minded about muggle- and Veela- intermarriage in their ranks; family is family. That doesn't mean, of course, that they would react with universal pleasure to a vampire in their midst, but there would be people who considered Kestrel blood to be thicker than magic and who would oppose anyone who got stake-happy over the situation. Sooooooo, interested?

I'm perfectly happy to forego being Potions Master, for Muggle studies ... the suggestion was originally Rose's. Or, is there other subjects potentially more interesting she could teach? I'm open to suggestions.
Either way, she'll be hanging out in the basements of the dungeon most of the time :)
I think we could work a lovely tie between Mary and Erin! Kestrel is a wonderful family name for me to give her :) somewhere, about half way between 1291 and now, Mary came into the family, left her mark and several children, then left again :)
If you'd like to work out specifics, we can message privately or email or whatnot.

Throwing this out there, but having an OWOD veteran player play a Vampire Professor who teaches ABOUT VAMPIRES would be awesome both from an in-universe perspective (the children kinda need to know) and an ooc-perspective (the players kinda need to know too, ha). I don't know if you or Mary would be interested in playing out a teacher who teaches Vampire culture, clans, history, etc. but I thought I'd throw out the idea.

Well, I *should* say no ... the Masquerade, and all that :) BUT, vampires and mages worked together during that dreary Voldemort business, so there was already plenty of sharing.
So, Mary could well educate the sweet young witches and wizards about the dreadfully dangerous world of vampires, for their own safety :) After all, the magical community accepts her still, despite her centuries "in the darkness" :)
her advice ice will be a little biased, as such things are when there are factions. But at least it will be useful. For the most part :)
Rose, is that all ok with you? Mary Kestrel, professor of vampiric studies? :)

Ha, oh yes, the Masquerade. I assumed (possibly wrongly!) it was adapted a little around the Wizard community since they're magical and secretive too. And I think a little bias should be fine; I had more in mind, like, Vampire 101. "How to be polite to a vampire", "how not to get blood-bonded to a vampire", "how to conduct oneself as a vampire guest", "vampire rules of safe passage", and the usual cross-culture stuff for magical beasts and creatures, heh.
(Man, now I want to attend this class!!)

Masquerade doesn't actually count towards the magical world via canon book references (on the owod house rules there is a rundown of book references etc...).
Yeah vampiric studies could be very interesting. But I'd also think it would be text book vague as i'm sure the school wouldn't actively try and make vampires seem 'cool' to lose their wizarding blood. heh.

CANON REFERENCES TO VAMPIRES:JKR's Vampires are considered to be Dark creatures. They are referenced in many books on Defence Against the Dark Arts, and covered in DADA classes [POA3]. Gilderoy Lockhart devoted one of his books - Voyages with Vampires - to this creature [COS4].
Vampires appear to originate from Europe, as every reference to them thus far has been associated with a European country. Quirinus Quirrell apparently ran into some Vampires in the Black Forest [PS/SS5], and there was also a rumour going around the school that he'd stuffed his classroom full of garlic in order to ward off a Vampire he was worried had followed him from Romania [PS/SS8]. Later, Hagrid had a disagreement with a vampire in a pub in Minsk (which is in Belarus) on his way to visit the Giants [OOTP20].
Vampires are regarded as non-wizard part humans [GOF10], and are classified as "beings" rather than "beasts" by the Ministry of Magic. This classification is seen as controversial in some quarters, however [FB].
Nevertheless, Horace Slughorn saw fit to invite the celebrated Vampire writer Eldred Worple and his Vampiric friend Sanguini to his Christmas party in 1996. Sanguini was relatively well behaved, although he did look a little over-interested in a group of young girls [HBP15]. |

*nods* Oh, I'm sure it wouldn't be glamorized at all! But a combination of basic cultural tips (to avoid anyone stupidly inciting a war via insulting a prince or something) + survival tips (to keep the students from being embraced or drawn into the culture too deeply) would be, I think, very reasonable.

harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/VampireRowling using Dhampire and Garlic Aversion in her version of vampires. We haven't decided yet if we are going to allow the same or not -yet-.

So, from discussions, I'm looking at her doing the occasional guest lecture in Defence Against the Dark (the how to survive an angry vampire), and teaching regular classes of "Vampire 101" (the how to not get a vampire angry), and Muggle history. Does that work?
Mary is really very nice for a vampire. :)

That makes sense to me! Headmistress McGonagall would interview her for the teaching position, but it sounds like Mary is not dangerous to children, which is good.
