Arthur was nervous. He'd been getting more and more so all week, picking up the phone twice to cancel, then putting it down again, knowing he needed this. After the ritual at Ross's Corners, then what happened after, and events at the Redthistle estate, he could feel things wearing thin.
He also knew his God treasured insanity. It was a juggling match. But, if he was going to bring more to Hastur's following, he had to survive and function.
So, he kept his appointment, arriving 30 minutes early at the Sanatorium reception.
"Um, good morning. Roger Moore to see Dr Reece?" Why did he not sound sure?

The receptionist looked up, brushed some of her red hair from her face and adjusted her glasses. The moment she caught a good view of Arthur she blushed a little, he was certainly nothing like the usual types she saw. Smiling politely she nodded, "There is some paperwork that needs filling out, the information is all provided for you to read." she said, collecting a few sheets from a draw and sliding them over the counter. "I shall call you when Dr. Reece is free," she paused for a second before finishing with, "Roger" and a bright smile.
The forms were as expected; Address, any current diagnosis and medication, contact details of a friend or family member in case of emergency, doctors name, address as so forth.

Arthur smiles at her. He wasn't expecting someone ... impressionable. He took the forms from her with a tip of his invisible hat, and sat down to fill them out.
Most of the information was blank. He didn't really have a regular doctor, previous diagnosis, or medications beyond some painkillers. His address he put down as the shop, and ... who's name? Caleb or Matilda for emergencies? He put down Caleb, just because he didn't want to bother Matilda with medical things.
When he was done, he took them back to the receptionist.
"I'm finished." he says, smiling.

The receptionist gives a warm chuckle at the hat tipping and busied herself with her duties while Arthur dealt with the form. When he was done she was more than glad to take it back from him. Her eyes glanced over the information, there was slight surprise at the blank spaces especially for the doctor but she smiled a little when she noticed Caleb's name. She glanced at the clock, there was still a little time before Mr. Moore's appointment and she did not have too many duties at the moment. "No wife or girlfriend then, Roger?" she asked politely as she moved to organise the paperwork in the appropriate place. She put a slight wiggle into her walk as she turned away from the desk, glad she was wearing a nice blouse and tight skirt today.

He watched her. He was a warm blooded male, how could he not? He appreciated her effort, smiling.
"There's a new girlfriend. But we're not quite at the point of sharing this deep yet. And, I don't want to bother her with things. Sorry, love. Maybe next time." He winks at her.

There was clear disappointment as she sat back on her chair but she kept smiling, "Now that is unfortunate, still.. new girlfriend suggests you don't know where it will lead." she laughed her warmly pleasent laugh and looks Arthur straight in the face. She had noted his address as a shop, maybe in a few weeks she'll be able to pay the place a visit.
The phone rang then and she sighed, "Sorry, Roger." she muttered apologetically and stepped away to answer it, leaving Arthur alone in the reception room.

Arthur grins, his ego sated by her attention. He nodded as she answered the phone, and went to take a seat and wait, picking up a magazine to pass the time. He found himself stroking the scar on his head absentmindedly.

The call keeps the receptionist out of the way as long as Arthur waits, at a couple of minutes past eleven a door opens and an older woman with a less pleasant attitude looks out. "Mr. Moore?" she asks, looking directly at Arthur as he was the only one in the waiting area. "This way," she spoke the moment he stood, turning and walking slowly down the corridor beyond.
Beyond the reception the corridors were a pale blue which was likely meant to be neutral or soothing but instead gave the place a a cold feel. There were no signs on the doors they pass but the staff member clearly knew where she was going. She led Arthur through one door to another corridor and past a set of old looking stairs, up top the lights were off. After a moment she stopped in front of another plain looking door and indicated for Athur to step inside.

Arthur looks up when his name is called, nods to the older woman, and puts down the magazine, standing to follow her. He hated hospitals. Even the normal sort. This one was already feeling ... wrong. The blue didn't do anything to make the walls feel more cheery. As they walk, he finds himself getting lost in the corridors. They come to the door, and he looks from her to it and back again, just briefly, before nodding.
"Thank you," he says, and enters the room.

Manuel Reece was in his late-fourties at least. He is a slender looking man with black wavy hair which has begun to go grey, he sports a small matching mustache and his mexican ancestry shows clearly. He smiles as Arthur steps into the room, "Mr. Moore? I'm Dr. Reece, please take a seat," he says waving to the room where several different chairs and a chaise lounge sit empty.
"I do hope you had no trouble finding the place," he moves to take a seat near whichever Arthur picks. "What brought you here today?"

Arthur nods to Reece. He makes a move to shake the doctor's hand in greeting, but when waved to a seat, he takes an armchair not the couch, wiping his palms on his trousers as he sits, resting his cane against the chair.
"Yes. And thank you. And no, the hospital is easy to find." He clears his throat, clearly uncomfortable with being there. Perhaps not entirely sure he's made the right choice.
"Life is getting ... complicated. Work has been stressful. I've got a new relationship. Her life has been stressful. I've found it's getting harder to, well ..." He's not entirely sure why. "Cope?"

"Life has ways of doing that, yes." Reece nods, "Sharing your life with someone entails also sharing difficulties and often complicated pasts."
The doctor took a relaxed position facing Arthur, "You used the word stressful twice in a row there, did you notice that?"

He shifts, one hand involuntarily going to the scare that runs up his head.
"Yeah? Is that important somehow?"
He notices what he's done, and puts his hand back in his lap. He's wondering, again, why he came. He can't be fully open with this man. Doctor confidentiality doesn't cover everything like a priest's does, right? If he tells the doc everything, he's likely to be locked up, one way or another. His mind is going a million miles a minute.

"It shows you have a lot more on your mind than what you were saying." Reece smiled in a relaxed way, "You realise that everything said here is entirely confidential? Any session notes I make are kept sealed and do not include names, so they cannot be tied back to you. I am checked and tested every couple of years by a national board to ensure my practises are up to date and the only reasons I would ever break that confidentiality is if I felt you were a risk to yourself or others."
He looked totally at ease in Arthur's presence, he did glance up to the scar when Arthur touched it but decided to leave it for now. "Anything else will remain entirely between us." he added.

"And what constitutes a risk to myself or others?" he asks quietly. "You're not a priest. They keep confession, don't even break silence if I tell them I'm a serial killer or about to assassinate the president. What about you?"
He looks at the doctor, his fingers scratching at the back on one hand.
"Not like I'm about to admit that, by the way, it's just an example."

Reece nods, not phased by the question. It was a normal one to ask. "Suicidal or murderous thought combined with intent, but even then I would do my utmost to determine whether I considered there to be a serious threat. More than that, I would not contact anyone else without consulting you first." he nods firmly. "We are not too dissimilar from priests in that respect, though while confession can ease the soul, I strive to do more."
He leans back a little in his seat, "Is that acceptable?"

Arthur listens as Reece spells out his responsibilities. He doesn't like what he hears. There's no clear cut answers, and that bothers him. A Yes, or a No, would be so much easier to deal with than the vagaries coming out of the doctor's mouth.
"I guess it'll have to be." he says, clearly unconvinced. But, it's accept, or leave. He's trying to stall the leaving bit for now.

Reece noticed the reluctance and nodded slowly. It was not a good start but there was little he could do but hope it would never come up, he had never needed to break confidentiality before and had no plans on changing that record. At first glance Mr. Moore did not seem to compare to some of the former felons he had dealt with before and the fact he had come here of his own free will suggested that even if there were thoughts like that, any intent was being resisted.
"Alright, so tell me about all this stress. Your work and your girlfriends life."

"My work is on multiple fronts. First, I'm a procurer and seller of old and rare books. I have a shop in town. Acquisition can be as simple as attending an estate sale, or a high stakes bidding war on the internet, through to complicated and convoluted cross country adventures into god knows where." He pauses, shifting in his seat a little. "Second, I'm an investigator. A business my new girlfriend and I are sharing together. Harrow and Moore Investigations. We sort out unusual problems for people. That too can get hairy." He starts to reach for his scar again, catches himself, and puts his hand back in his lap. "Lastly, I have a business based in New York. Large staff. Often conflict with competitors. Which is why I stay here a lot, working on other things."
He looks at the doctor.

"You are a busy man," Reece observed and nodded, "Clearly you travel an awful lot too. Many people would not consider owning a book shop to insolve such much conflict and high stakes competition." He notices the gesture again, "I am curious what constitutes an unusual problem, that too sounds rather unlike what people usually associate with private detective work. Should I assume it was that part of your profession life that led to your getting hurt?"

"Books are big business. When you're dealing with items that are unique, and quite pricy, the deal can be everything. And finding them," he smiles, "that's fun, too."
He shrugs a little. "I do travel a bit, but less than you might think. I'm back and forward to New York a lot, but don't go much further generally."
The question about unusual problems, and his scar, stops him briefly. He reaches up to trace the line of it, centre forehead all the way back to the crown of his head. He nods.
"Yep. That happened in July. Was dealing with a problem in a house for a friend. I guess you could call it a haunting."
He waits, to see the doctor's reaction to that.

"Fun?" the doctor asks with a small smile, nodding his understanding of Arthur's travels.
At the mention of the house and the haunting there is a look of acceptance on the mans face and perhaps even interest. "A haunting? So is paranormal investigation the focus of that business?"

"Travel can be fun, yes. Took a trip to Florida with my girlfriend recently. That was nice. Went to Disney World, went fishing, spent long days just the two of us. Probably the only unstressful thing of late."
He watched the doctor's expression, and the look of acceptance on the man's face, and actually relaxed for the first time.
"Kind of. Not its entire focus, but definitely something she and I both have experience with, yes."

Reece actually smiles as he listens to Arthur talk about his holiday, it was certainly clear that whoever this girlfriend was she had become a truly important part of his new clients life. He then nods politely as the experience is mentioned. "Rare to see an overlap between paranormal and private investigation." he observed.
"I imagine something truly unexpected must have happened to escalate your concerns since that holiday, you do not seem the type to relinquish control easily. Nor the type to seek help like this without putting a lot of thought into it."

"I guess that puts us in good standing for business, then. Offering something no one else does." he smiles a little at the doctor.
"Unexpected? Worrying, more like. She's got family problems, and keeps saying she doesn't want me to feel out of place. Which leaves me feeling like maybe she doesn't think I belong."
Arthur shrugs. "I could be reading too much into it. I probably am. Isn't everyone recently in love slightly paranoid?"
He's clearly hoping for an affirmative there.
"And, you're right. I'm a bit of a control freak. So coming here was hard. And staying has been harder again. But sometimes I feel myself slipping. Like I'm losing control, not just of things around me, but of my own mind, and I didn't want to get on that slippery slope where it's too far gone to know it's gone. You know what I mean?"

The doctor nods and smiles brightly, "Love brings with it a lot of unexpected emotions, some paranoia is certainly commonplace. Moreso if you both live somewhat dangerous lives." he nodded to Arthur's scar. "Had the two of you talked about each others family before these problems came to light?"
He listened to Arthur talk of his uncertain lack of control and nods slowly, "I believe I do, such a lack of control like that would remove much of what makes you who you are."

"We never talked a lot about family. I don't have much to talk about. Mine kicked me out when I was a kid. She's talked about hers a little. She's more local."
He rubs his scar again, grinning.
"That was an interesting one. But we put it down. I think. I hope." He smiles. "Do you actually believe in such things, doc? Spirits and monsters and ghosts and gods? Things that go bump in the night?"

Reece gave an acknowledging nod at the comment about Arthur's parents, it did not sound like an issue that weighed on the mans mind too heavily now but he would keep it in mind. "Is hers a large family?"
Put it down, that was an interesting turn of phrase not usually associated with most paranormal investigators, he thought. The mention of gods too, not one but plural. In his experience most people who believed in the paranormal were atheists in any case.
"I believe there is an awful lot in this world which cannot be readily explained, Mr. Moore." he spoke truthfully.

"I know of her parents, and her twin sister. She hasn't mentioned any others. We're going to visit them soon. Problems with her sister. Things have been awkward, between her and I, not with the sister. When we were discussing going, she kept saying things like she wasn't sure if I'd feel comfortable, or fit in, or something. She said otherwise, but I can't help feel that maybe she's ashamed of me in some way."
He shrugs, and watches the doctor's reaction to what he said about their investigations. He wasn't sure if the doctor believed or not, but at least he wasn't automatically pegging Arthur as a nut case.
"There is, doctor. And I've seen a good deal of it up close and personal. London in the late 90s being a good example." He wonders if aything got out about the troubles there, or if it all got contained somehow.

"There are other possibilities." Reece gave a sad smile, "For example, if she feels uncomfortable or at odds with them herself it would be natural for her to want to protect you from that too. Are you so sure it is you she feels ashamed of and not them?"
At the mention of London the doctor gave a small almost non-committal nod. He knew nothing of such events personally but through his career contacts he had heard of more than a few people from various walks of life and mental states who had had something to say on the matter. Too many to consider it a coincidence. "And yet you still seek out more?"
