Professor LeFaye waited impatiently for the students to arrive to the first class of the year. Not much would happen in the way of hands on, but there would be ground rules and basic information.
Hands clasped behind her back, Morgana stood, expressionless as she waited for the first student to arrive. There would be no assigned seating, but project work groups would be.
The room smelled of hundreds of years of dankness mulled with sage, wormwood and some smells too mingled to identify. The lamps burned bright enough to take the darkness away, but did little to take the edge off of the classroom in the bowels of the castle.

Mattie was up bright and early for her round of classes and she had an ever so bright smile on her face. With quillb parchment and her potions book in hand she was anxious to be the first to class. She wanted a good spot up front and she wanted to start off with a good impression. She recalled briefly that the Professor for her class was a woman with a ferret from the speech the Head Mistress gave introducing her.
Mattie flushed trying to remember her name and walked down the steps to the dungeons. She was quite turned around for a moment and Morticia had darted off not wanting to join her for this class. No matter, it didn't take her long to find the classroom as other Professor's were out and about directing first years.
She walked into the classroom her eyes wide looking at everything. She didn't bring her cauldron. She really hoped it wasn't needed for the first day. She didn't quite like the feel of the classroom and figured that was why Morticia didn't join her. The kitten knew better it seemed. She took a spot at the front and placed her things on a table. "Good morning Professor" she said quietly.

Yelena was also up bright and early, been to breakfast and was in pressed robes when she hurried into the potions classroom right behind Matilda, almost barrelling into the Hufflepuff girl. She had her books in one arm, cauldron in the other, and managed to stop just in time. She grinned at Matilda "Hi, sorry. I'm Yelena." She says as she dumps her things on a front row desk, making it all neat. "Good morning, Professor LeFaye," she adds quietly.

Morgana looked at the two girls entering, reading their actions and furrowing her brow slightly. Yes, of course. The Hufflepuff and Slytherin from the ceremony. After the first two she had quit paying much attention. As the girls fussed with their supplies, Morgana cleared her throat. "Well, it is at least morning." She said, clasping her hands behind her back as she walked down the center aisle of the desks.
"There will be no need for cauldrons today. However, I expect them to be woth you for every class so that at any moment you are prepared. Cauldrons will be cleaned throughly for every class and will be inspected. Accidents...happen." Morgana paused near Matilda for a moment before turning back around and heading to the front of the class once again. Much smaller than her infamous predecessor, Morgana didn't have the size to instill her authority, but that was no matter.
"As happy and gleeful as mass media and marketing has made potions in the muggle world, boasting them as essential oils, this is nothing as silly as that." She said, giving an indignant sniff.
"I expect arrival to be 5 minutes before the assigned class time and all suppmies ready by that time."

Mattie listened and watched as her potions Professor walked down the isle. She felt a ping of guilt at not bringing her cauldron and made note tk have it at all times for this class.
With everything set she smiled at the girl who took the spot next to her. "Hi." she whispered. "I'm Mattie." she said quietly as the Professor continued on talking about the potions class verse essential oils. She kind of figured potions was about the magic vs some new age natural remedy that non-magical people were in an uproar about but she just quietly whispered to Yelena her comment.

Yelena nodded gently as the professor spoke, smiling under her arm at Mattie.
"You're Hufflepuff, aren't you. You went first." She whispers. "I love your kitten," she adds.
She looks up, taking notice of the teacher. She liked potions, and wanted to do well. She liked the look of the teacher, too, she was pretty.

Morgana heard the chit chatting from not only a few students, but most predominantly Matilda and Yelena. She paused and drew her wand, flicking it and sending a large book flying from a shelf above, swiftly lowering itself to the table in front of Matilda and Yelena, pausing and then slamming down flat with a startling bang. A sizeable cloud of dust billowed up from its old, worn leather cover.
"Ms. Adamson, is it? Since you and your tablemate wish to be heard please turn to page 842 and read the first paragraph about belladonna. Then hand it to your friend to read the next. Both of you aloud." She said, tilting her head slightly, eyes intent on the first years before her.

Mattie smiled at Yelena. "Her name is Morticia." she smiles brightly wondering if the girl knew anything about muggle movies and where the kitten's name came from.
She looked up and saw the old book hovering over the table and then it slammed down. Mattie jumped from the sound and coughed waving dust from her face. She blanced at the Professor and opened her book. "Yes Professor."
"Atropa belladonna, commonly known as belladonna or deadly nightshade, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the nightshade family Solanaceae, which includes tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant. It is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia."

Morgana nodded "Indeed it is." and flicked her wand, sending the book sliding over in front of Yelena, sending another wave of dust into the air. Her eyes snapped to two Ravenclaw girls giggling at the two in front of them. "Ladies, you will see me after class to wash cauldrons and dust the bookshelves. If you are worried about dirt, may I suggest gloves." She said, referring to the 12 ft tall alcoves looming over them.
Morgana looked back to Yelena, a smirk pulling at the corner of her mouth. "Please proceed."

Yelena quiets down, listening politely as Mattie reads, smiling at her the whole time, then when it's her turn she clears her thirst and reads,
"Its distribution extends from Great Britain in the west to western Ukraine and the Iranian province of Gilan in the east. It is also naturalised and/or introduced in some parts of Canada and the United States. The foliage and berries are extremely toxic, containing tropane alkaloids. These toxins include atropine, scopolamineand hyoscyamine, which cause a bizarre delirium and hallucinations, and are also used as pharmaceutical anticholinergics."
She looks up at the professor in the hope she read well.

Morgana nods in approval and even offers what would pass as a smile. Taking her wand, the book sailed back up to the shelf and settled there as if it had never moved.
"So, with what we just heard, Belladonna is not to be taken lightly. We will begin our first term learning about what ingredients are for good potions and which are used to produce potions for the ill-intended." Morgana took her wand and slipped it back into her robes.
"Belladonna is well known among muggles as a toxic plant. In large amounts it can cause death and minimally paralysis. In small, "pharmaceutical" doses it can be used as a sedative. My job here is not only to inform you of how to make potions and properly use them, but to also inform and instruct as to what not to do."
Morgana produced a box with ornate carvings on it. Pressing a series of small wooden buttons in a certain sequence, the box started to click and grind, rotating and opening to reveal a rack of vials, each sealed with different colored corks.
"Ms. Adamson. Would you please approach the front of the room?" Morgana said. Oh she had her crosshairs on the young Hufflepuff indeed.

Mattie listened as Yelena read her part and then watched the book return to where it came. She listened as her Professor explained what would happen in this potions class. When she produced the box, Mattie watched with fascination as it opened and vials were shown.
She stood quietly and with a look of guilt on her face she went and stood next to the Professor.

Morgana looked at the girl's posture and mannerisms. Pressing her hand gently on the girl's shoulder, she straightened her up. "Show no weakness my dear, lest ye be the prey." She cleared her throat, passing a hand over the rack of vials.
"Let us say that we are going to make a lovely tonic for our grandmother who has a bit of a seasonal bout. Here we have 3 vials. None are labeled, all look reasonably the same. The main ingredient will give her symptoms ease if not relieve her completely." Morgana said, hands behind her back as she looks at Mattie then back to the class repeatedly.
"Choose a vial, dear. Make grandma feel better." Morgana's soft upper class New Orleans drawl accenting her words.

Mattie looked at the Professor and with her words she stood straighter and changed the look on her face. She was determined to be strong and face this first challenge.
Mattie looked at the vials and picked each one up gently and took a smell of each of them. She had studied all summer and read all her books more then once. After looking them over and smelling them she was pretty confident in her choice.
She held the vial in her hand. "This one. It has a hint of mandrake leaf in it when you smell it. Which means it is probably the Pepperup potion for colds." she said confidently as she looked at the Professor.

Yelena watched Mattie and the professor. She was a little bit jealous that Mattie had been called and not her. She loved the idea of potion making. She'd read the book from cover to cover before even getting on the train. She was sure she'd know the correct answer, and wanted to make a good impression, and get points for her house. But, this girl might be her friend, so she'd let her have this moment. There would be others.

Morgana allowed the girl a half smile of approval. "Very well done, Ms. Adamson. Somebody has been curious." She said gesturing for the girl to take her seat.
"One more thing, when you are smelling an unknown ingredient, ot is best to wave it under your nose rather than inhale directly. Sophorous bean powder is rather unpleasant." She said. "Five points to Hufflepuff." Morgana turned and looked to Yelena.
"Approach please. But before your turn, can you address the class and tell us all the difference between the infamous Death Potion and the Draught of Living Death?"
Morgana raised a brow, curious to hear the interesting white haired girls answer.

Yelena smiles at Mattie and her success. When she was called upon, she stood, moves to stand before the professor and turned to face the class.
"The death potion will actually kill you with just a touch," she says. "The Draught of Living Death puts the drinker into a deep death-like sleep."
She seems pleased with her answer. She'd read about the death potion at the MACUSA in one of her parents books last year. The Draught of Living Death was in a sixth year text she'd browsed through while buying her books. She hoped to make it one day.

Mattie handed the vial back and looked up at Professor Lefaye and took note of how to smell potions for future reference. She smiled at Yelena as she went back and sat at her desk. She was quitr excited. She earned her house points the first day of classes!
When Yelena explained the differences between the two potions next Mattie listened. She never wanted to learn to hurt people. Would they be learning to make a potion that could kill someone? She paled a bit at the thought but didn't raise a question about it. She presumed it was better to listen at this point.

"Very good! The ingredients of the Death Potion are classified. The Draught of Living Death is not, but luckily for you all, we will not be learning it." Morgana gestured to her seat. "Ten points to Slytherin." She said, looking around the classroom. The Ravenclaw girls were silent and looked like whipped dogs, knowing they were in for some hefty chores.
Morgana cleared her throat. "Now, please open your textbooks to page 23, basic measurments and properties of dry ingredients."

Yelena smiles, nods to the professor and returns to her seat with Matie. She is proud of answering correctly, her pre-school reading her paid off. She took out her text book and opened it as instructed. It was a good start to the year.

Mattie listened as Yelena spoke and then as the Professor followed up. She wondered why Yelena got more points then her but didn't say anything. Actually she was quite happy that Yelena was answering the question's as good as she was. That meant they could possibly be study buddies with Kiami.
She gave Yelena a big ole grin when she sat back down. Mattie opened her book and began to read. Maybe Potions wouldn't be so bad with Yelena and Kiami there to help as well.

Morgana lectured for the rest of the class time, the students taking notes with their quills, questions coming up every now and then. When the time came for dismissal, Morgana held up a hand before the students scampered off.
"Cauldrons. Clean and ready for next class. Bring them along with what you have today. The two ladies from Ravenclaw, please stay back." She said, waving her hand to dismiss the rest of the students.

Yelena gets up when class has ended, smiling at Mattie.
"I'm gonna love this class," she says with a smile. "I just know it."
She picks up her things, smiling to the professor before she exits with a spring in her step.

Mattie gathered her things and walked with Yelena out of the classroom. "I hope I do well enough to pass the owls by fifth year. I'm not so sure she likes me." she laughs softly.
"I think we have Divination's next. I'll meet you there?"

"Yeah, sure." She doesn't seem overly convinced, though, as if she's already judged the class an enforced waste of time. "I need to go check on Dragonborn first, make sure he's doing ok."
She heads off down the corridor, deeper into the dungeons.

Kiami had been sitting quietly at the front of the class. She had slipped in behind Yelena and Mattie. She had intended to take the seat beside Mattie, but before she could the other girl dumped her things on the open desk. Claiming it as her own. Kiami shrugged, noticing a student taking the place on Mattie's other side. "Oh well" she thought with a quiet sigh.
Deciding instead on the desk at the end of the front wall, snuggled nicely against the wall. After setting all of her things up in order. She intended to go over and say hi to Mattie before the class started, but her friend was already in conversation with the other girl. Again, Kiami sighed, taking her seat instead.
Gomez lay curled up, alert under her desk. His ears flickered, tail lazily swishing about. His tiny body quivered with the same excitement that danced in Kiami's dark eyes.
She had been excited about potions class all summer, even before her parents had told her about their move to London. In between all the things that happened during summer camp, and the move Kiami had been buried in potions books well above her grade level.
They were the last books packed, and the first unpacked. With her fathers extensive library she had access to a huge selection of potion books. Even some rare copies, and a few original.
As the commotion around her unfolded Kiami watched it all with huge eyes, Mattie had already found trouble. A smile pulled at her lips from the irony of it. Kiami was the one that normally found herself in trouble. The year was only just starting though, so she was sure things would happen.
The green on her robes flashed under the dim lights of the dungeon room as she shifted in her chair, watching with amazement as the teacher pulled out a small ordinate box, before she even had it fully open Kiami knew what it was and her heart beat with jealously. The potions box had been something she had been begging her parents for, but they had told her she needed to wait until she was sure potions was something she succeeded in.
She was determined to do just that. As the professor called Mattie up, and gave her the scenario she mentally ticked off the three bottles in front of the girl. Even from her spot, she could see by the color of the liquids in the bottle, what they were. Something her father had taught her.
Then, once the teacher took the class back over Kiami scribbled note after note with her quill. Soaking herself in the knowledge that the professor shared. She became lost in the words as the class went on, and before she knew it. It was over.
When the students were dismissed, Kiami gathered her things, and placed Gomez on her shoulder. "Now. No scratching this time Gomez, or you'll spend the rest of the day in the dorm. Got it?" She scolded him as she followed the flow of students out of the classroom. "Goodbye Professor. See you later." She said as she gave a slight smile and a nod on her way out the door.
