Jillian left home around sunset and made her way to the Leaky Cauldron as quickly as she could. She was wearing a fairly standard looking set of wizarding robes and her birthday goggles, along with David's jacket. She was a little relieved to see she had arrived early and managed to find a table in the corner out of the way where she sat with a mug of warm butterbeer while she awaited Maria to arrive. Every time either door opened she looked up nervously, feeling a little worried about the meeting. morte

Maria had actually caught a cab from Camden Town into the city a short distance from the Leaky Cauldron. She'd been here before, but not for a long time. She found her way inside, and stood looking around. Yes, she was a vampire, but she was also a professor st a Hogwarts. She had dressed as such, to make her status clear to any who might question and challenge her. A few move to do so, then pause. Some others choose to move away. Her clear lack of humanity raising a few defensive hackles.
She spotted Jillian, and made her way to the girl, sitting opposite her.
"Good evening Jillian." She smiles gently.

Jillian had almost choked on her drink when Mary finally entered, she coughed and hoped the professor had not noticed though she thought that extremely unlikely. She managed a smile when the vampire sat down, well aware of all the looks she was now getting.
"Hello, Maria." she managed, "Er.. I don't think I'm allowed to order Wyne for you, else I would. How are you?"

"I'm well. Busy getting ready to go back to school. You? I expect you have something to say, and you are scared to say it in private, else you'd have come to visit my home."
Her words aren't angry, or accusatory, but neutral in tone. Mary is quite subdued compared to how Jillian has seen her in the past, but then they've never met in a public place before.

Taking a deep breath Jillian nodded, doing her best to stay calm. "Actually, I was instructed to meet here. I would have gone to your estate otherwise." she said honestly, knowing that the statement would probably convey a lot of what she had to say. Mary's subdued and neutral tone was not reassuring, but she still felt she could trust the vampire.
"I suppose you have an idea what I have to say then? I am sorry."

Maria nodded. The moment zjilkian had said she had been instructed to meet here, she knew the girl's decision. She was disappointed, and it probably showed, but she had no desire to force the girl, make her a slave. That wasn't what she wanted. Maria despised ghouls for a reason.
"Why are you sorry? Haven't you made the right decision for yourself?"

Jillian averted her eyes for the first time when she saw the disappointment on Mary's face. "I, er.. I hope so. It was interesting, though I feel I have wronged you somehow."
She clutched her mug tighter as she looked back up, meeting Mary's gaze.

Mary met and held Jillian's gaze, but did nothing with it. She wished she had Auspex so she could tell if anything improper had been attempted, but then likely wouldn't have intruded here anyway. Surely Rose had known that using powers on a witch in this establishment would be immediately reported.
"The only way you could wrong me would be if you lied to me, or to yourself. If you have made this choice freely, then I wish you well. And, should it turn out to not be what you hoped, I will be here." She said. "Rose is, for a Tremere, quite reasonable. You could choose worse. I trust I will still see you in my classes this year?" She asks, her expression becoming slightly more animate.

"I try not to lie," Jillian replied, privately adding that one of the reasons for that was because she was no good at it. "It was my choice, I am my own master." she smiled, feeling far less anxious over the conversation now the worst was over without issue. She was not going to talk of Rose however, that might be taking things too far. "I am looking forward to both your classes, I made sure I would not be restricted there before deciding. My parents were not convinced Muggle Studies was a good choice for NEWT level, but my summer has shown me how important it is to know about worlds other than your own." she took another sip of what remains of her drink before asking a question she clearly much wanted an answer to, "Your offer to be friends despite my choosing another still stands then?"

"Muggle Studies is a fine subject." Maria smiles, "And I am glad youcpve decided to year I'm trying to get permission for an overnight stay class in Hogsmede, so we can experience things like the mobile phone, and other electronic niceties." She looks at Jillian. She was only a little sad that the girl had chosen as she had. Likely her inquisitive nature had been the decider. The desire for knowledge, not power. Maria made a mental note to watch for suitable Slytherin students instead. "Yes, the offer still stands. My word would not be worth much if I were to go back on such a simple promise. And the truce between the Sword and the Camarilla here in London is based on my word, and your new mentor's."

Jillian was clearly interested in the idea of an overnight stay in Hogsmeade. Her mother had a couple of electronic things she kept in a cupboard that had belonged to her mother, but until she had obtained her phone Jillian had not had too much to do with them herself. The phone had proved itself impressive and almost worth what it had cost, so she did want to see more. "I am glad of that, though mentor is something that will take some getting used to.. I still regret having to choose though." she adds, giving Mary a look.
"I appreciate that you will be there if I need. David too, I hope." she smiled brightly. "Although I hope it is not just your word that allows us to talk like this?"

"My word that ensures it, my desire that it transpires so. You are a fascinating girl, Jillian, and it will be a pleasure to watch you grow into your power. I would be lying if I said I do not wish it could be me having a hand in that, but there is still room for friendship." She smiled.

Relief and reassurance spread across Jillians features and she nodded, hoping she had not begun to blush. "It was your lips that said a man can't have two masters," she reminded, "I am glad we can be friends. It was you and your classes that set me on this path after all."

"Yes, it was. What have you learned about that expression since then?" She asked with a twinkle in her green eyes.
"I'm glad my class has had such an impact on someone," she laughed gaily. She wondered which class that had been, but it didn't really matter.

Jillian stared into Mary's eyes, trying to figure out exactly what she was thinking. Those green orbs were the first vampiric eyes she had looked into after avoiding them in class for so long. She surprised herself how much that habit had changed over the summer, she could happily gaze into David's eyes for hours given the chance and she had learnt from Rose that the habit was not good defence and that trust was important. "I have a mentor, but I am my own master." Jillian said plainly, still watching Mary for any reaction though she did not actually expect to see any. "You and your classes," she repeated.

Mary nods to Jillian.
"Correct. You are your own master. You cannot have two. Remember that, as you move forward. Remain your own master. And, should any try to take that from you ... well, I will always be here." She smiles. "I'm glad. And I will look forward o the coming year,"

"I shall gladly keep that in mind, Professor." she said using the title not to belittle any friendship that may be forming, but to show she still holds great respect for the vampire. She hesitates for a moment before asking, "Has your summer been okay? You seem different than you did at school the couple of times I have seen you. Very different environments each time I know, but I wanted to check. I know an awful lot has gone on after all."

"I have never been better." She answers. "For many years, I struggled to hold onto something that was becoming more and more a burden, for the sake of my pack and Ssct. When you contacted me about the phone, with your lovely owl, I was in Greece, visiting my sire, finally giving up that which had tormented me for so long.now that it is gone, I am free to move forward, free tomshoulder new responsibilities. Yes, my summer has been good." She smiles. It's predatory. Like the cat that's caught the canary. Satisfied and deadly, but not immediately dangerous.

There was definitely a great deal of curiosity in Jillians expression as she listened to Maria's words. Part of her really desired to ask more but she remembered how she had been told that any friendship between them would include limits on what they could talk about if she accepted anothers mentorship. That look to the vampires smile sent a shiver up her spine but only made her more curious. "I am glad for that, I guess.. Your sire is still around then?" she asked, thinking the question a safer one. She had no idea of Mary's age but she had a theory which was enough to know that her sire must be a very old one.

She nods. "He is. And yes, he has existed for far longer than most. Once upon a time, bored with the life I had, I took the hand of a man I loved and admired, and stepped into another world. I loved him dearly for the longest time. In many ways I still do.." she smiled again, but there is more tenderness in the expression.

Jillian sighs, watching Mary's expression with a soft smile. "The exotic and unconventional pirate?" she asked wistfully. What little she knew of the story was truly romantic she thought, so different from the tales of David or Nikolaus.

Maria smiles. It's genuine mirth.
"Yes. Both excellent words to describe my Diego. It was an amazing time. The world was so large then, and we saw so much of it together." She laughs gently. "But times change, and now a metal bird can take you places in hours that once took weeks. All the romance has gone from travel."

The smile was wonderful, it brightened Jillians day just to see it. Knowing she had brought that about gave her confidence that they could make the friendship work despite all the obvious troubles. "I have never travelled myself, I can't help but feel there is still romance to it all. All the way to america, I've no idea how much I shall see. Wizarding communities are kept so small that even with aircraft the world seems quite vast to my eyes."

"Yes, wizarding communities do seem to keep very much to themselves still. Once we were less closed about what we were. Back before the Statute of Secrecy was introduced. Things were simpler then I think."
She is glad that Jillian still feels comfortable to be around her. Glad her ... lack .. hasn't made the young witch too uncomfortable in her presence.

Jillian still had no idea what burden her friend and teacher had given up to change her outlook and attitude, but she had grown up around so much strangeness that she felt as long as Mary was happy with herself, then it would be alright. She had found it no surprise to see that the woman was different outside of the classroom in any case.
"I think I appreciate the Statute, is hard to imagine what it must have been like before it though. At least magic has come a long way since that time!" she smiled, a slight hint of pride in her voice with that last.

"I gave it up so long ago, sometimes I forget what it is and isn't capable of," she says. "I'm sure they've added wonders untold since my day, though. School was very different then, too." She looks at a Jillian now more like Professor Kestrel than Maria the friend. "Which subjects are you taking this year.?"

"They certainly have," Jillian said with some certainty, not noticing the change in Maria's demeanor at first. "As for classes.. Yours as I've said and of course Charms. I'll also be taking Potions, Transfiguration and Arithmancy. I am thinking about sending a request to continue Defence Against the Dark Arts too, when I get the school. Assuming my OWL grade is high enough."

Mary nods, listening to her class choices.
"I think Dristan will accept you if you ask. If he doesn't, please let me know so I can bend his ear on your behalf. I do so like bending his ear." She smirks, and laughs, clearly meaning something else entirely.

Jillian's head tilted a little, both puzzled and curious about the laugh. "How many of you professors are good friends outside of school?" she ended up asking, her mind thinking that she already knew that Maria, Aisha and McGriffin had obviously all been on close enough terms. She knew that much, even though it was obvious that would not be too accurate a fact now.

"Fewer than you might think. I've known Dristan now for nearly six years. Long before I became a teacher. We reconnected at Hogwarts, though. I'm also familiar with Professor Oakwood outside of school. And there may be a new teacher this year I know, too." She smiles. The community isn't that large, as you mentioned."
