Mattie put her phone one her night stand and hopped out of her bed. She went looking for her father first in his room. "Dad?" Not here.
She sighed. She knew the only other two places he would be the library or his study so off she went looking for him. Not in the library, so study it was.
She quietly stepped into the open door. "Hey Dad." she says quietly. She knows he had Elijah put her to bed an hour ago but she couldn't sleep and she wanted to apologize to Mary and well see her dad so here she was in slippers and pjs standing in his door.

"Hey sweetheart. Can't sleep?" Dristan put one of the books he got from the bookstore down and turned on the couch motioning Mattie to join him.
"Something on your mind you want to talk about?" He asked curiously and with concern since the spell had worn off an hour ago.

"I'm good. Not really tired tho." she walks in and sits on the couch. "I sent Aunt Mary a text. I wanted to apologize to her. She said she could stop over if you allowed her too."
She looks at the book. "What are you reading? I don't think I've seen that book in the library. Are you holding out on me?" she giggles softly.

"Did you now? So are we expecting a guest this evening Mattie?" Dristan smiles at his daughter as she joins him on the couch.
"Not holding out. New books I purchased recently to add to our collection on history, mythologies and lore. So far it is a very good read about several distinct cultural lore."
He places the book between the both of them so she could see what he was speaking about.

"I don't know if she is going to come tonight or not. She only said she would come visit if you said it was okay but not when." she picks the book up and looks at it, leaning against him.
"Um, Dad?" she laughs softly. "You do know some of this is written in another language don't you?" she points to some of the exerts here and there.
"What language is that?" she lifts her head up looking at him.

Dristan smiles as Mattie curls into him and he wraps his arm around her. "Well she is always welcome anytime sweetheart." He whispers.
"Mhmmm...it is latin. Lets see if I can translate for you." Pulling out wand and placing it to his for a moment and whispering.
Once he is finished he tell her the story written in latin.

As they're reading the Latin stories, the shadows begin to thicken near the fireplace. The gateway opens, and Mary steps out. She's wearing black slacks, a matching top that flares from under the bust, and a long loose coat that looks like silk from the way it flows. Her hair is wild and free, and she's wearing her rosary around her neck.
She looks at the pair on the couch and grins.
"Hello. I hope I'm not interrupting."

Mattie listens as Dristan reads to her, almost nearly falling asleep before she heard Aunt Mary speak. Her eyes open and she looks at her with a giant kid smile that shows she was almost out, but like kids do it was gone just as quick and she was bright as ever.
"Hi Aunt Mary." she stands and goes to her, kind of a guilty look on her face and she looks down. "Um, I'm sorry for last week." she says looking back up. "I didn't mean to hurt you. You came when we needed you and I got all angry when I shouldn't have." she fiddles with her hands. "Can you forgive me?"

Mary looks down at Matilda. She reaches out her arms to the child as if to pick her up, if Matilda allows, she will, and carry her back to Dristan on the couch. Mary is very strong.
"I know you didn't mean to hurt me. You were hurting yourself, you are allowed to be angry, it is part of grieving. Thank you for acknowledging that you had hurt me. And for your apology. You are young. I can forgive you a great deal. Had you been adult, there would be reparations to make. But not tonight,"

Mattie allows herself to picked up and carried back to the couch. She nods her head at the reply and settles for a moment.
"I will try better next time. I make no promises, I hear teenagers are worse and I've seen plently screw up. But I'll try to be mindful." she says.

Dristan watches Mary pick up Mattie and for the briefest if moment something hits him. Words she spoke to him at the ball he threw for her. For now he would leave it be and ponder on it later.
Listening to both speak back and forth as Mary sits down next him on the couch with Mattie he just watched quietly. The scene before was a surreal one to say the least.

"Hmm, teenagers today can be brutal. In my day, your father would be looking for a husband for you about now. You're almost a good marrying age. A husband would know what to do with you, don't you think?" Mary smiled. It was hard to tell if she was joking or not. She looked across at Dristan, her expression teasing.

Mattie blinked her brown eyes seemingly wide and then she busted out laughing. "Boys my age as a husband?" she is laughing hard. "I can run circles around most if not all of them." She stands up and looks at her father.
"If you ever plan to marry me off, we are going to have a problem." She shakes her finger at him trying to keep a straight face. "Besides, I don't want a husband someday or any day." she looks at them both for a moment. "I want a wife." she bites her lip. She had never told anyone she liked girls more, she even had a crush on Kiami but wouldn't say anything to her ever.

Dristan caught Mary's teasing glance and was about to teasr back when Mattie was trying to be all serious and the next part caught him from complete left field.
He was silent for a moment and saw Mattie biting her lip and he gently places the book down and brings his daughter to him.
"And you know what Mattie there is nothing wrong at all if you like girls. As long as you are happy and treated right that is all that matters to me sweetheart." A genuine smile.

Mary looks at Dristan. "So, down to Dmitry for heirs to carry on the family name." She smirks. "Best let him know now," she laughs. She looks at a matilda. "Good for you, for sticking up for what you feel. Do you have a special girl already?" She asks.

Mattie gives her dad a hug and kisses his cheek and the looks to Mary. "Women don't carry the name either way. Now though we could. Like the wife if I ever marry could take on my last name. Besides we could adopt also." she smiles with her matter of fact like voice.
Then Mary asks another question and she blushes brightly. "Um, no not really." she wasn't spilling that bean just yet to anyone.
"Oh I do have something I want to show you though. I'll be right back." Mattie runs off out of the study and goes to grab something.

Dristan leans back on the couch and is smiling and silent. His little girl never ceased to amaze him and the more he found out about Mattie the proud he became of her.
"Oh this is going to be an interesting school year with her." He whispers a gives a teasing glance to Mary.

"I do believe you are correct there. She is quite bright, and will definitely be a handful. Which house do you think she will end up in?"
Mary didn't think the child had a Slytherin bone in her body.

Mattie was only a few doors down, she walked into her art studio and took the sheet off the painting. She very carefully checks the oil paints to make sure they are dry. With a smile. She covers the painting back up with the white sheet and holds it one arm. Grabbing her easel with the other hand. She carefully walks back to the study.
Once back she smiles at them both. She puts the easel down with a tad bit of trouble she finally manages with one hand. Then she places the canvas down careful not to reveal anything yet.
"Is Balthazar around?" she asks Aunt Mary.

As if on cue, the catlike creature wanders out of a nearby shadow, leaping up to the back of the couch, watching Matilda. It sits there, staring at her.

"If I had to guess Hufflepuff or Gryffindor honestly." Dristan spoke truthfully.
"I look forward to the sorting ceremony with her." He glances over his shoulder and see Balthazar and smiles looking at Mattie setting everything up for her surprise for Mary and Balthazar.

"Yes, they do sound likely," she commented to Dristan. "The ceremony is always interesting." She wondered, if the hat were sorting her now, would it choose the same for her as it had then.
"It seems he was around, yes." Mary smiles, reaching up to pet the shadow. "What is that you have?" She asks Matilda.

Mattie waited until Dristan finished speaking and she smiled at Balthazar. "Hi Balthazar." she gets all giddy for a moment and looks at Mary. "Okay so, I only just finished it. I haven't showed Dad yet either." she seemed nervous for a moment and then she pulled the sheet off.
The canvas was paiting of both Mary and Balthazar. Mary was standing near a fireplace, the one in the study, dark shadows encircled her and faded into the background. Balthazar was at the top of the painting in raven form looking as if he was flying and then he disappeared into the cat sitting on the mantle.
The shadows almost seemed to come alive from thr canvas thanks to her paints from Thulile. She stands there waiting to see what they would say.

As soon as the painting was revealed Dristan locked his eyes fully and smiled. He took in every detail his daughter had done even how she did the shadows.
"Beautiful sweetheart." He whispers as he continues to gaze at Mattie's painting.

Mary looks at the painting. Her eyes widen. She gets up and approaches it, getting close, really looking at it.
"Oh, Matilda, it is beautiful. The shadows are so perfect, almost alive."
She reaches out a hand, her fingers tracing lines just above the surface of the paint, not wanting to touch it. Balthazar flies over, landing on her shoulder, looking too. He makes an almost raven sound at Mattie, bowing his head. Mary reache sout and takes Matilda's hands, kissing them one at a time.
"You have a great talent. Never let a soul say otherwise. Thank you."

Mattie smiled at her Dad and then waited. It seemed like time slowed down as she held her breathe waiting for Mary. When she stood and walked to the painting it was in slow motion to the young witch. She chewed the inside of her lip.
Then she smiled and spoke and Mattie lite up like the sun with happiness. Balthazar even came over and made and odd sound and she giggled as Mary took her hands and kissed them. "Thank you Aunt Mary." she beamed brightly.
"It is yours. A gift." she looked to her Dad 'I read in a book there is a spell to preserve paintings throughout time. Could you do that. So Aunt Mary could have it for always?" she is beside herself with happiness as she looks at the painting and back to Mary.
"The eyes are vividly green, but they don't pop as much because I thought it would take from the shadows. I can add to it though if you want."

"I know the spell sweetheart. Let me know when you are ready for me to use it." Dristan smiles and watches Mary's reactions and Balthazar's as well.
For someone wh casts no reflections to be painted in such a way as Mattie had done was more than a gift and he understood just that remembering a night he shared with Mary.
This was his daughter's moment and he was there for her and the reactions he would never forget.

"Awesome!" she smiles brightly. "I'm so happy you both like the painting. Kiami and I hung out this past weekend and she helped with some of the paints and stuff. I'm trying to learn Thulile's technique for the paint cause I'm almost out of her special paints. But I think she uses magic as well and I can't duplicate that yet. Maybe when school starts."
She wraps her arms around Mary and gives her a hug. "I really am sorry." she whispers stifling a yawn.

"You are forgiven, little one. And I am so happy with my gift. And the eyes are just fine. Thank you so much."
Mary looks over Mattie to Dristan, and back to Mattie. It's clear the child needs to be in bed, and Mary is at a loss.
"I'm sure one of your teachers will be able to help you," she says, guiding the child back to her father.
