Students of all levels are invited by Professor Kestrel to attend evening revision classes for Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Normal daytime classes are continuing - in the dungeons - but this revision class is in the usual room.
Professor Kestrel offers assistance with the mechanics of magic - wand movement, pronounciation - and with theory subjects. Should students need more detailed instruction she will call for assistance.
The vampire professor sits at the front of the classroom, shadows swirling about her, gathering at her feet and across the walls/ceiling around her, waiting for students to arrive ....

Max pulled of the hood of his sweater and combed his hair with his finers before knocking on the door. He opened the door and noticed that he was the first student to enter.
"Pardon the intrusions professor. May i enter?" After a short nod Max entered. "I had some questions for professor Adamson nut as he is absent I willl gladly ask you. I have some questions concerning how to deal with skrewts." he took a deep breath and combed once again his hair with his hand. "And could you possible give me some tips concerning my technique On the stunning spell? I think i have it almost down but it seems to lack power. I know it's normally something you learn in your fifth year but I couldn't help myself. When i read something about a spell I need to master it. So if you could help me. I can go back to studying for my exams." he smiled nervously. "I promise I won't use it carelessly!"

Horace slipped in just behind Max. He had questions as well, but perhaps nothing others should hear, so he slipped towards the wall for now and patiently waited, back to the wall. He didn't really know Max. Well, he knew who he was, of course, Gryffindor and all, but had never really met him. Then again, there was no surprise there It was not that he was good at meeting people in the first place. He listened quietly to the questions the boy asked. It seems everyone was all about the exams this time of year.

Mary waves Max inside with a smile.
"Welcome, Mr King. Please leave the door open so others don't need to knock. Take a seat."
She listens to his requests.
"Skrewts. Nasty things, I've heard, but I've never seen one up close. They didn't exist in my day, so I really don't know. Perhaps Professor Pendragon might have some better idea. I read that Mr Potter used a particular charm to defeat one during the Tri-Wizard tournament, but I don't remember reading which one that was."
Mary stood, and approached Max. Her shadows moved with her, flowing with her skirts. They stopped just short of Max's feet.
"Ahh. I assume you were watching the duelling carefully, and want to learn the spells Mr Wolfbauer and Professor Adamson used? A little advanced for you right now, aren't they?"
She looked down at the young wizard, hands lightly clasped in front of her.

Max had Expected this answer but still he was quite dumped out that she thought it was too advanced for him. But he wasn't ready to give up just yet. He knew he would not be able to study if he did not get a satisfactory answer.
"I think that you would be quite surprised with what I am capable to learn if I set my mind to it. I am sure that I could master it if you could give me some advice. I just need some pointers. You see professor. I want to enter the duelling club next year and I need to catch up with the older students. That is way I was researching the stunning spell and why I came here."
Ooc: I asked and it was granted that I could change my age. Max King is now a fourth year.

Professor Kestrel acknowledges Horwce as he enters, watching him as he takes a back seat remaining silent. "Welcome, Mr Euphorbis."
She turns her attention back to Max, listening to his pleas.
"You do realise that you do not need to 'catch up' and that duelling is done in age groups, yes?" she asked. She smiles at his enthusiasm, "Okay, le'ts use that mannequin over there with the armour on ias a subject. Show me what you know so far."
Mary takes a step out of Max's line of fire, making sure nothing else fragile is in his way, and awaits his attempt.

"With all due respect professor. That may be true forr others, but father always told us that the world expects more of us King's." Max stepped forward and pulled his wand out of his robe.
He inhaled and started to zone in on the dummy. He forgo about the Ravenclaw in the corner. He didnt see the professor anymore. It was just him, his wand and his target. He raised his wand and went through the motion. He then shouted out the spell. "Stupefey! (STEW-pey-FYE)" and a small blast of red energy hit the target. Clearly there was something wrong.
Max turned with a mixture of disapointment because of his failed attempt and excitment because he would be getting advice towards the professor. "See professor. I am clearly doing something wrong..."

She raises an eyebrow at Max's comments about his father's expectations.
"I don't really care what he believes, Mr King, but inside this school you will compete in your age grade until you win your way through to the open level competition." She nods at her definitive answer, and her gaze dares him to challenge her on that again.
Mary watches him cast. She refrains from putting her fingers in her ears as he raises his wand.
After Mr King has cast, she glsnces over at Horace to make sure he is OK, before turning to Max.
"Right, well, you are close, Mr King, that is true. But your pronounceation isn't quite correct. You said, Mr King, 'STEW-pey-FYE', stressing both first and last syllables whereas, if my memory serves me correctly, only the first syllable is stressed ... as in 'STEW-pey-fye'. Can you hear the difference?"
"Now, tell me, do you know it's counter?"

Horace's face seems petrified after that last spell, and he has now pressed himself even firmer with his back against the wall, eyes wide. His facial expressions seem to plead 'never do that again, please'! He recovers once the casting has past and nods to the Professor, as if acknowledging he's alright.

Mary nods to Horace, acknowledging his discomfort, moving slightly so that she is between Max and Horace.
"Charms come in all shapes and sizes, Mr Euphorbis. Sometimes, when they don't work, the light show is even greater than if they do work. Perhaps you need to spend more time around those practicing, to get used to the effects."

Max nodded eagerly. "yes, yes i heard rhe differences. That was my problem. Thank you. Thank you so much professor. I got my information from an old spellbook in the library, but you can not learn pronounciation out of a book. I am sure this change will must certainly help me!" he smiled at the professir to show his gratitude.
Max nodded at the question of the professor. " There are two spells that could count as a counter-spell. The protego spell which will shield you from the stunning effect if your shield is strong enough. The other one is rennervate. A spell that will wake up someone that was stunned." Max knew this information by heart.
"I can demonstrate the protego spell if you want professor." He looked behind him towards the ravenclaw at the back. "or maybe I should let him ask his question. I don't want to hog all your time professor. My friends always say I become too focused and egocentric when it comes to learning new spells. It is a working point of mine."

Professor nods, acknowledging Mr King's knowledge of the subject.
"No, thank you, Mr King. I think that is enough advanced magic for tonight. Do you have any questions directly relating to coming exams, and the subjects covered this year?"
She gives him a moment, then turns to Mr Euphorbis, "Did you have anything in particular you wished assistance with tonight?"

"No but i would like to be present during the duration of the revision class if that's not a problem for you professor. It is always good to hear the questions of other students who think differently on the subjects." Max bowed lightly towards the professor. Put his wand away and moved towards an empty seat at the back of the class.

Horace held his head to the side and tapped his ear, then did so to the other side as well. Ah well, he was sure the ringing would cease soon enough, won't it? He looked up as both the Gryffindor and the Professor referred to him.
'Ah, yes, thank you Professor Kestrel...I had a quite practical question really, although it doesn't really have anything to do with the upcominge xams, if that is alright with you? I mean, it is on subject matter, of course...'
He took a step forward from his shadowy retreat in the corner now.

Mary nods.
"Of course. You can spend the time reading your textbook and notes from the year."
She sits back, watching the two first years. Was she ever this young? It seems so many lifetimes ago. Her own time at the school had been relatively uneventful. A few childhood adventures, but nothing worth writing about. She wondered what the years ahead held for these students, and whether or not she would be around to see it.
Outside the windows the night sky gleamed gently. The moon was still bright, despite only half its disk being visible. Mary had always loved the night, and never once regretted her decision.
She looked up at Horace as he spoke.
"Of course, Mr Euphorbis. What was it you wanted to ask?"

'Vampires, Professor...'
He took another, careful, step forward.
'I mean, I have read all the text matter on the subject of course, and I can identify the common weaknesses and strengths, but...there seem to be many different kinds, each with their own particular set of powers, merits and flaws. How are we ever to know which type of vampire we face and how to defend against it, if you don't mind me asking?'
The question had felt awkward in his head and it still did now he asked it. I mean, one does not ask one's Professor how to defeat her every day.

The vampire professor smiles broadly, showing her fangs. The shadows that gather around her feet begin to swirl a little, as if aggregated. It's hard to tell if she is angry, annoyed, or just curious about his interest and providing him with a show.
"An interesting question, Mr Euphorbis. The official answer is this ... you do not need to know the answer to pass your exams this year. Or the next. Or for some years yet. These are details for senior students who are specialising in such subjects."
She paces a little, hands clasped before her. As she does, a blurry black bird enters the room, flies to the professor and lands on her shoulder. It turns dark eyes on Horace as Mary reaches up to pet its feathers.
"Also, one must consider, that where once such things may have been studied in detail, from a very limited pool of knowledge, back when wizards and vampires were at odds, now that we have an accord, studying the detail of our weakness could be considered ... rude. And yet, that is part of my reason for being here, to teach you these things as best I can."
Mary sat at the teacher's desk. The bird on her shoulder flowed down her arm, and curled up on her lap as a cat, where she petted it calmly.
"That said ... for what it is worth, even we have difficulty identifying the different bloodlines when meeting those we do not know. It is not as cut and dried as the difference between, say, an owl and a hawk."

For a moment, Horace gets distracted, as the black bird flies in. Without realizing, he's already studying the animal, tryng to determine what exactly it is, mundane, magical or perhaps something entirely different. Then he forces himself to attention again, as the Professor starts to speak, trying to focus on her and not on the bird...still failing now and then. He listens and nods though.
'I understand, Professor, and my apologies if my question was rude or insulting in any way. I mean, I was curious and you seemed the one with the most knowledge on the matter.' He indeed meant it wholeheartedly, it seemed, and there was no trace of sarcasm in his voice. Knowing Horace, he probably wasn't even capable of sarcasm.
'There were...others..;I mean, as guests, here at the school, during the ball, and I was curious, that is all. Again, my apologies...'

Mary smiles again, more genuinely this time.
"Don't apologise for your curiosity, Mr Euphorbis. It is an endearing quality in one so young."
She pets the cat. Horace can see it better now that it is settled. It doesn't seem to have fur or feathers, but rather it seems to be made of the same stuff as the shadows that swirl around the Professor, just more solid.
"One thing to know ... almost all powers a vampire has are powered by blood. Not all, but most. At any given time a vampire only holds enough blood within themselves as they have recently hunted. So, those who prefer not to kill generally exist on lower supplies than the monsters. Once that supply is exhausted, a vampire will either lose control of themselves and fall into a violent frenzy, and then fall into a deep sleep, or if their control is strong, they will simply sleep. If you can goad them into expending all their vitae, they will be mostly defenceless."

He nodded, now seemingly a bit more at ease when told he shouldn't apologize for his questions. His eyes rested on the curious animal still though and he had to pull them away now and then, to look at the Professor and be polite. Manners maketh man after all. He seemed genuinely surprised and intrigued by the notion of this vitae and nodded.
'I see, yes, I think I understand...the more powers, the less....Vitae? Until the vampire runs out...then it either goes into a form a hunger or sleep. I see, yes... If you don't mind me asking, Professor, what exactly is that cat...animal ? I thought I knew mr. Scamander's treatise on magical creatures by heart, as well as all mundane species local to this part of the world...but I can't really seem to identify this particular creature.'
Again, he took another careful step closer, inspecting the beast.

"Yes, that is well put. You have the basics there. In time you can build on that knowledge."
She pets the cat, looking up at the question about it.
"This is Balthazar. He is my companion. He is not a creature of this world, but more a sentient shadow from the Abyss. Your Mr Scamamder is unlikely to have ever been there to detail its occupants for his book."

"Can he be compared to any creature of this realm perhaps? I mean, he seems to adapt form of what is known here, or is that an illusion? What does he feed on? Does he experience any drawbacks from being here? Do all vampires have a companion like him, just as wizards often do?"
He suddenly stopped himself, realizing his eagerness has turned him into a veritable waterfall of questions. He covers his mouth with a hand.
"My apologies, Professor...I didn't mean to pry"

Lilianna made her way to the DADA room. Despite it being the end of the Term and really wanting to be done already, she was trying to make an Effort to stay caught up in all of her classes, and this meant going back to DADA despite Dristan not there. However, It was a bonus that Professor Kestrel was taking over, until his return.
Stopping just outside the door to listen to the type of conversation, Lili sighed a bit before making her way into the room to see Horace and Max. The girl looked tired. Restless almost as she entered the room.
"Sorry I am late professor, I was attending to other classes and Lost track of time" She smiled, just lightly as she made her way closer to the other students in the room. "Have I missed anything crucial?"

Mary ignores most of Horace's latest barrage of questions, and turned to greet Liliana.
"Welcome, Miss Garcia. Please take a seat. Tonight is an informal study session where you can resolve any questions you may still have on the subject matter. You have missed Mr King asking about charms, and Mr Euphorbis asking about vampires. Nothing of consequence." She smiles.
"To answer some of your concerns, Mr Euphorbis, each vampire has abilities related to their blood. Those of my blood summon and control shadow. The Abyss is a realm of shadow and darkness that we have access to. Not all of my blood obtain companions from the Abyss. Balthazar might be likened to a small morphing creature. He tends to choose small creatures that are typically black for his form, as he has no form of his own."

Horace looks over his shoulder for a moment when his House-mate enters, but quickly returns his attentio to the Professor and her curious familiar. He nods and mentally notes the information given.
'Thank you for your time, Professor, it was very interesting. I will now step back and allow the others some questions.'
Which he promptly does, finding his spot against the wall again, out of the attention, especially now more and more flocked to the class. His eyes stayed on Balthazar however, in utter fascination.

Lili simply nods taking her seat at one of the tables near the front. She looks at the smaller students and tries to smile as Professor Kestrel notes the subject matter...She pulls out her own notes, reviewing them herself. She Looked about to see if Balthazar had indeed taken any form as of late and smiled at the cat now settled on Kestrels lap. She had actually enjoyed the snuggles from the last meeting with the Professor.
Listening to the back and forth from Horace and Kestrel allowed her to re-read through some of her notes from previous classes, or notes she would have to ask the professor about, later from other sorts of readings.

"Thank you, Mr Euphorbis, for your curiosity and your enthusiasm. I suggest you refresh the material from Professor Adamson's last few classes, since he isn't here to revise it with you."
She looks to Liliana. "How are your studies, Miss Garcia? Is there any work in this subject you require assistance with? Or are you just being diligent ?"
Balthazar stretches, looks up over the desk. He spies Lil, and hops up off Mary's lap, vanishing into a nearby shadow, and popping out of the ones beneath Liliana's desk. The pseudo-cat hops up onto the witch's lap, and curls up purring.
"Well, that traps you with me for a while it seems." Mary openly chuckles.

Lili looks up to Kestrel as Horace moves back to the wall. "Both, I would guess" She says softly leaning back in her chair as the shadow creature appears below her desk. "Hello Blathazar" She greets as he hops onto her lap. She gives care and love to the cat before looking up to her.
"More so, trying to catch up. I've added in some extra...help with Professor Ambrose and Its been interesting to keep up on it all. I was looking more at learning more defensive and Offense spends to use against dark arts. An example, the room Badly and I had found ourselves in. While a uncommon occurrence it left us a little stranded. Nothing we did helped at all."
Agian, Lili's eyes look down to Balthazar and she shakes her head. "I'm okay with this Professor. I enjoy his snuggles anyways."

Dmitry walked in, his heavier booted foot steps proceeding him in to the room as the sound echoed off the dungeon walls. "Guten Abend, Professor Kestrel." He greets the professor as he walks in to her room.
Past the door he scans the room to see all who's shown up. "Lili, fancying running in to you" a quick smirk and a wink run a crossed his face as he pulls up a seat next to her. Dmitry hears a purring as he looks down and sees Professor Kestrel's showed familiar, in his cat form curled up on Lili's lap. "got a study buddy already I see" as he nods to the the cat form in her lap.
He pulls is book bag next to his chair and pulls out his books and notes. As he does so he again looks around the room, he notes a Gryffindor 5th year and... the Ravenclaw first year from Divination. the same one who was there the night he and Professor Adamson went head to head.
Dmitry waited for Lili and Professor Kestrel to finish there conversion before getting her attention, "Lili!" his voice lowered as to not draw attention, "who is that first year in the corner, the one from Ravenclaw?"

Professor smiles at Liliana. "Enjoy his company, Miss Garcia. Just don't let him be a distraction to your studies."
Looking up at the sound of boots she sees Mr Wolfbauer. "Good evening. Glad you could join us. This evening is for revision for exams. If you are having difficulty with any topic, please speak up"
Mary smiles slightly at the interaction between Lil and Dmitry as she looks back at the book on her desk.
