He'd rebooked their dinner. Same restaurant Matilda had suggested. Made sure they had decent wine, the right things on the menu. A secluded table with a view. He had really screwed up by letting business drag him away at the last minute, but some things he just had to do himself. Who'd have thought that placing vampire heavies into his organisation would cause such a stir. It's not like none of his people thought he was anything but ordinary.
Arriving half an hour early, he'd brought her flowers and another book wrapped carefully. He hoped she liked them. He sat, twiddling his thumbs, playing with a book of matches from his pocket. He hated smoking bans more than honest cops.
He looked at his watch ... she should be here soon. He watched the door ...

Matilda arrives at the place soon after and sees him straight away. She smiles at him and walks over to the table.
“Good evening love.I'm sorry if I'm late. I've come straight from work. My annual leave ended on the 2nd and they know it” she is dressed in smart work clothing (a white shirt, black blazer and a pencil skirt) “I hope you've not been waiting long” she says as she sits down opposite him.
“I hope your business went as planned over the weekend” she asked, generally interested in it.

His heart skipped a beat when he saw her, and he smiled broadly.
"It went as well as can be expected. I won't bore you with the details. I'm so sorry I had to cancel like that."
He passes her the flowers, and the wrapped book with a sheepish smile. "A minor amends for the inconvenience." he says simply.

"There is no need to apologise. Things come up all the time" she responds to him "anyway I came back late from North Massachusetts on the Thursday so would have made bad company" she laughs at the last part. She takes the flowers and the book from him. A nice surprise but was not something he should have done. "Thank you for the flowers and the book, but there was no need to at all" she then rummages in her bag for a few moments before she pulls out something from her bag. "Whilst I was back home. I saw this in a book shop, I saw it and thought of you. I guess I thought you might like it" she hands him a book unwrapped with the title Myths & Legends of Massachusetts.

He takes the book, looking at the cover and smiles, then he flicks through the index, nodding slowly.
"Thank you." He smiles, pausing at one, turning the book to her it's on the page of the 'black flash' ... "No one you know?" He chuckles, setting the book aside.
"Do you ever find yourself reading such books, wondering if it's superstitious nonsense, or somehow related to one of the old gods?"

"I'm glad you like the book" she smiles back at him, slightly blushing a little bit. "Ahh The Black Flash. Not somebody I know" she giggles a little bit at that when he shows her that page.
"I've always believed in most of these stories, maybe it is because of the stories I was told when I was a child, or as you said maybe it is related to one of the Old Gods" she explains.

"I'm sure there are many other oddities in the world, but surely some must be of them." he smiles again. He loved to be able to talk to her with this freedom. There was Caleb, but that wasn't quite the same.
"Would you like wine with dinner?" He flagged down a waiter, waited for her reply.

"I'm not doubting that at all. Some things can't be explained in this world" she calmly replies back. She felt comfortable talking about things like this with him. Yes she had her coven but conversation there is very limited. Most of it is prayer.
She sees the waiter being flagged and the offer of wine. "I'd like a glass of Riesling please"

Arthur orders a bottle of their best Riesling, along with iced water, and Chinese tea.
"Covering all bases," he jokes. Then sends the waiter off while they decide on food.
"What do you feel like eating?"
He sat back across the table and just looked at her. Even in her work attire she was lovely, and he smiled again.

"Once again I do apologise for looking formal. I had to keep the library open for a student meeting. I don't normally dress like this" she doesn't know why she feels the need to apologise, she knows she looks too formal for this place.
"Well I was going to go for the Sweet and Sour Chicken with some boiled rice" with Chinese food, I always go for what I know I like. What about you?"

"There is nothing wrong with how you are dressed, love. Though a few pinstripes wouldn't go astray." He winks, smiling.
He listens to her choice, nods. "Cantonese steak, I think, with vegetables. And I might steal a mouthful of your rice if you let me."
The waiter brings back the drinks, pouring the wine, then takes their orders and departs.
"So, tell me about your visit home, and I promise not tombither you with my business dealings." Arthur sips his wine, watching her in anticipation.

"Well my trip home was okay. I had spent most of it with my parents, who I'd had not seen for a long while. My home town is more of a tourist town so I got to enjoy the sights" she drinks her wine. "And just really unwind at one of the many coastal areas which was needed"
"The other thing that happened at home was my parents meddling in my love life, something they've always done since I was a teenager" she drinks more of her wine "I do tell them there is no need to now I'm older"

Arthur listened, nodding. It'd been a long time since he'd had parents, much less family who cared, but he kept that to himself.
When she mentioned them meddling in her love life ...
"How did they meddle? They're not trying to set you up with the boy next door are they? I'd really hate to have to challenge him to a duel or something."
He was smiling, but he found he was actually quite jealous at the thought of Matilda with someone else. Jeremy didn't cut the grade, but some home town boy just might.
"Did you tell them about me?" He asked, almost hesitantly.

"My parents in passing have always asked if there is someone in my life, they did it at college and in London. They're not trying to set me up with the boy next door don't worry so there is no need to duel"
She drinks some of her wine and reaches her hand out to him "I told my parents that I've met you and that you already make me happy and I mean it. They did comment that I was the happiest I've been in a long while and that is because of you"

He smiles, takes her hand, giving it a squeeze.
"Good, I'm not much for duels." He mirrors her, drinking some is own wine. "He'd probably just vanish." He smirks, mostly teasing her, then he has a sudden thought and adds, "and no, I haven't touched a Jeremy! Promise!"
Damn, why did I say that? he thinks. She knows cnprobably do it, and doesn't like to be reminded. Stop with the jokes, you old fool, before you drive her off. He drinks some more wine, then refills both their glasses.
"So ... I'm glad you're happy. That makes me happy." He squeezes her hand again. "So, how can I keep making you happy?"

Why does he keep mentioning that name. I have no desire to be reminded. It's not Jermey I'm with.she thinks to herself as he does say that. maybe I need to prove that I chose him. Not Jermey
"Just keep being you, simple as that" she says to him. "I like you for who you are both as Arthur and as Dickens. I don't care about your job in New York for a start" she meant it as she says it.

He smiles slowly. She likes both of him ... all of him. The greatest miracle of all. Yet, he sensed he'd said something wrong,
"I'm sorry if I said something to upset you. That wasn't my intention. Sometimes I joke, and the joke can be inappropriate, and when I try to fix things, I only make it worse."
Arthur reaches into his pocket and pulls out his cigarettes, only to put them away again when the restaurant manager gives him a dirty look and points to the 'no smoking' sign. He sighs, picks up his wine glass instead, taking a healthy drink.
"I'm sorry, love. I'm all thumbs at this dating bit."

"It's okay. I can sometimes be pretty bad at working out jokes. I just don't want you to worry about Jermey or anyone else. I'm with you"
She sees him get in trouble with the manager about the smoking ban "If you want to go outside for a cigarette then you can do. I'll still be here"

"No, love, it's fine. When I get nervous, it's a habit. That all. I didn't for a. Inute think that you wanted to be with that nervous skin bag, but when I joked, I didn't want you to think that I was the reason he'd dropped off the face of the earth, either."
He smiles a sheepish smile, drinks some more wine. He picks up a toothpick from the holder on the table, sticks it between his teeth with a grin.
"So, now that you're back at work, I guess days will be days, but weekends will be yours? How do you feel about a little touring?"

“Please love. Don't be nervous. I've stopped dwelling on any nervous skin bags as you say” she says very calming to him, trying to make him relax.
“ I will be working days at Mistatonic but I'll have my weekends. Touring. Yeah I think I'm up for a little bit of that” she drinks some more wine.
“I have some good news as well”

He almost blushes.
"Yeah, sorry. I just never really found a lady who's company I enjoyed as much as you. Yours. Whatever." He smiles again.
"So, good, we'll go touring. It's about time Dickens had himself more than a hundred dollar shit Box of a car anyways. But .. what's this good news?"
He leans across the table, genuinely interested in what she has to say.

She smiles when he says he enjoys her company. It feels good to hear that from someone like him.
“That sounds like a good plan. Whilst I won't be as useful for choosing a car. I'm all for spending more time alone with you however” she says to him as she plays with hair.
She leans closer to him “When I was away. I did some research on our Gods. It seems like there should be no issue with us being together. They don't seem to mix with each other”

To that piece of news his smile broadens until it's about to burst off his face.
"Now that is good news!" He exclaims, getting up and moving to where she sits, lifting her to her feet, and kissing her firmly. When he's done, he seems a little embarrassed perhaps for the timing, but not for the action, and kisses her again before sitting back down.

After they kiss each other after she shared the news. Matilda smiles.
"I knew you would be happy at that. I know that I was when I read it. Could not stop smiling like I am now. If anything our Gods are the opposite of each other so they don't associate with each other."

He laughs.
"They do say opposites attract!"
And they are interrupted by food arriving. Arthur gives her a look of 'typical' and sits back down, refilling their glasses, and raises his to Matilda.
"To opposing outlooks, and shared goals. To long life, insanity, and salvation."

"Indeed they do!" She agrees with him. Thankful that there is no issues with this blossoming relationship from The Black Man. She would ensure that she is still a very loyal worshiper of his.
As the food arrives and Arthur gives the look of"typical" Matilda just says quietly "I know love. Typical" as he sits back down. She raises her glass to Arthur and shares the toast before she takes a drink of the wine.

He drinks, and laughs ... and loves that she accepted his toast as it was given ... and settles down to eat, watching her all the while. They would make beautiful music together, and the sound would be the cries and screams of those sacrificed to their gods.
"So, where should we go first?" He asked casually as they ate? "North? South? Perhaps west? There's some beautiful country around here to see."

She smiles back at him. She knows that her mind is not all there but she still has her faith and she knew he had his. She knew that he would never question her loyalty and she would never question his.
Whilst eating her meal and listening to him casually asking where to go. She has never seen much of the USA. Only really Massachusetts. “I've never seen much of this country. Even when I visited different colleges. I have no preference. As long as we enjoy some warmer weather at some point” she hated the cold weather.

He eats, watching her, wondering about many things, consciously aware of how short his life was likely to be, given his devotions and business practices combined. Dd she really deserve that? A quick fling then the pain of loss? Mentally he shrugged. If his plans succeeded they could both be dead, or worse, before too long anyway. May as well enjoy life.
He smiled, drank his wine, ate his meal.
"Well, I've seen mostly Arkham and New York since coming from London, so we're evenly matched then. If it's warmth you want, south would be the way to go."
He didn't much care for the warmth himself. Arthur was quite content with cool damp air. He was from London, after all. But he'd put up with Florida itself to make her happy.

"Well warmth would be nice. So as you say South would be the way to go. Which would mean somewhere like Florida" she drinks some of the wine whilst eating her meal.
"I was thinking however would you be able to cope with warmer weather due to being from London? I do remember that it can be a lot cooler there?" She never could deal with the colder weather. She guessed that he was adapted to it.
