Ignoring the faint snores of her coworker McGonagoll looked back to the scroll, reading off another name who ended up getting sorted into Ravenclaw. Three more students were sorted by the hat until a noticeable name was called out. “Rose Granger-Weasley!”
A young girl with the famously obvious Weasley hair made her way in front of the school, that was the only thing she seemed to have inherited from her father however as beyond that she looked just like her well known mother. The Sorting Hat seemed to take a few moments to think before finally declaring, “Gryffindor!” “Thank Dumbledore!” the girl cried as she got down off the stool, thanking McGonagoll before making her way to her new house table who were cheering in delight much to the disappointment of many of the Ravenclaws.
Several more students were sorted, each house clapping and welcoming their new additions gladly. Scorpius Malfoy was sorted into Slytherin about as quickly as Yelena had been, which he expressed by giving the girl a slightly weak smile as he took his seat.
Finally after a couple more names, McGonagall called out “Albus Potter!” causing some commotion among certain students. Everyone seemed especially interested in seeing where this student would end up. There was silence as the hat sat on the messy haired youths head. He was short and thin with green eyes and dark hair, he looked almost terrified to be wearing the hat. Puzzlement spread out across the hall in whispers but after a long minute, the hat straightened up somewhat defiantly and called out, “Slytherin!” causing everyone to fall silent once more. Albus looked truly puzzled as an almost hesitant McGonagoll removes the Sorting Hat from his head. Nobody says a word until the blond boy, Scorpius, cheers and yells out that Albus could come sit next to him.
McGonagoll attempts to keep some order as she reads out the next name, but whispers are abound at every table about what had just happened. Several more students are sorted but it takes awhile for the atmosphere of the room to settle back to what it was.
Thankfully things had just about settled down by the time she reached, “Kiami Summers!”

Mattie listened more first years were sorted. Most of the names she didn't know but she heard the way other students were whispering. So the Malfoy family was always Slytherin, Weasley's were always Gryffindor and then a Potter kid was called up. She watched like everyone else, hearing a whisper from another student saying he was also a Gryffindor.
When the hat announced Slytherin though the entire student body erupted into so many conversations. Everyone was shocked and surprised and even the Head Mistress struggled to bring the students back under wing for several moments.
She listened to rumors and finally drowned them all out as she tried to focus on the ceremony. Kiami was the last one standing there, which meant she was next. Mattie crossed her fingers hoping Kiami came her way.

Through out the entire ceremony Kiami had been quiet, studying each student as they entered the hall. Mattie had been called first, she gave her dear friend a squeeze of encouragement before she headed up to the front.
Kiami, cheered and clapped along with all of the other pupils in the room. On the surface she was calm, collected, prepared as each new year made their way up, and were then sorted into their perspective houses.
The further the list moved down, and the more the group of new students thinned, the more Kiami's nerves danced, frayed, and sizzled with fear, excitement, and, anticipation.
Before she knew it, she was the only child left to be sorted. Finally, after the commotion around her began to settle down her name was called. She stood, shoulders squared. Determination, fear, and excitement etched itself quickly across her face as she made herself to the front of the class.
Taking her spot on the stool, she inwardly squirms, unsure of what the hat would say, where it would place her. Would she be Gryfindor where so many brave and strong students were placed? Hufflepuff with her friend Mattie? Ravenclaw, the house of the studious? She felt being placed there would no doubt make her parents proud. Or, would she be Slythrin? This quiet, reserved, always observing young child placed into the most infamous house of Hogwarts. That last thought sent a thrill of excitement through her emotions, she looked around at all of the students, her eyes settling on Mattie. She smiles at her, feeling all of her turmoil settling as she waits for the sorting hat to be placed on her head.

Yelena smiles as Scorpius was sorted Slytherin just like her, and just as quickly. She knew of the Malfoy family, of course. When the potter boy was called up, and the hat took its time, she was as curious as the rest. When it announced him Slytherin, she wasn't sure to cheer or laugh. When he came to sit with them, she just smiled and nodded. This was going to be interesting. Then the last girl got called up. She did hope she'd have a nice room mate for the year, and crossed her fingers.

The hat smiles broadly as the Weasley girl is called upon, quickly sorting her to Gryffindor, and the potter boy into Slytherin. Yes...Right choice for both it would seem!
As Kiami comes to join him on the landing and he is placed against her head she tilts and shifts the girls head as he thinks allowed.
"Ahh. Yes. quiet- studies hard like our ravenclaw friends. quick to anger and stand up for your friends sounds more like a gryffindor....but there is something deeper then just the books ad the defending..something deeper in your soul and your thoughts...Cunning, and almost defient.."
The hat chuckles a bit. "hmmm Well then... Better be SLYTHERIN!"

Yelena applauds as Kiami is sorted into Slytherin, smiling broadly at the darker girl, and patting the bench beside herself to welcome Kiami into the house they now share.
im sure we're going to be friends, she thinks to herself, as she waits for the other first year to join her.

Kiami squirmed under the hat, his quiet thoughtful voice muttering in her head. She wasn't sure where she wanted to be, but she knew she wanted to be happy with the decision.
Suddenly, the sorting hat shouted out her house, and Kiami blinked unsure if what she heard had been real. But then the table of Slythrin students erupted into cheers and applause.
Hoping down from the stool, she turns to look at Mattie's dad, confusion etched in her eyes. Then she looked over at Mattie, a thousand unspoken words between the two as she made her way over to her house table.
She smiles back the other girl that smiled at her, patting the seat next to her. Kiami wasted no time joining the girl, Gomez skittering across the room from his spot by Morticia to jump into Kiami's lap. She gave him a good scratch behind the ear and whispers over at the girl next to her. "Hey, I'm Kiami. This is Gomez. Nice to meet you."

Mattie stared blankly. She had just lost her best friend to Slytherin. She swallowed and turned to look down at Morticia who also felt sad that Gomez wouldn't be rooming with her.
Mattie did her best not to cry, she didn't want the attention, she really had wished Kiami would of joined her. She sighed and buried her head on the table.

Jillian hardly registered the final sorting as she did not know any of the other students, he attention was too caught up in the disappointment of not getting the chance to discuss spellwork with a granger and the general confusion over there being a Potter in Slytherin. Her parents would certainly be interested in hearing about that and she felt she should probably have to write them an owl about it. She spared a few smiles for the new Ravenclaws further down the table and waited for food.

Dristan was pulled away drom his hearing the sorting hat placing Albus Potter in his house. Confusion set in for a moment then a lot of pondering.
When Kiami was sorted he looked between Kiami and Mattie and saw both their reactions. Best friends in two separate houses and he felt for the both of them being separated.
He nods to Kiami and glances at Albus and Scorpius

McGonagall glanced back to her fellow teachers, Dristan in particular. She knew many of them would be just as surprised as her by the turn of events. She had been watching the first years as they arrived and lined up, so the reactions of the first and last girls to be sorted was not a surprise. It was not too often the hat truly surprised her and today it had done so twice.
Down at the Slytherin table Albus sat awkwardly, with Scorpius whispering to him rapidly trying to cheer him up. Neither boy was paying much attention to what was going on around them.
"Alright, students. Your attention please." The headmistress called out, her voice carrying clearly over the bustle of the room. As soon as there was enough quiet she continued, "Wild speculation has been a bane at Hogwarts for as long as I have been teaching, I would advise each of you to do your best to make this year different. For now however, we shall eat."
The moment she finishes talking plates of all sorts of foods materialise at the tables, quickly distracting students from their conversation as they dig in hungrily.

Mattie mostly picked at her food, not really feeling hungry anymore. The girl's that came with her into Hufflepuff had known each other for quite some time. Their families lived close to each other. At least that is what Mattie grasped from the conversation she overheard.
She felt welcomed to the house but she didn't know anyone and currently the whispers going on were about the Potter kid and people wondering what Harry would say. She surmised that Harry was the boy's father as she knew that Harry's last name was the same amd that he was Gryffindor and he killed Voldemort. Her dad told her much of the story from when he was a kid and she had asked him a lot of questions.
She only knew bit's and piece's but it was enough to grasp what happened. Morticia had left probably off to explore the castle. Mattie was just moving food around her plate wondering when they could leave.

Lili noted the look on Matties face. It bothered her that her cousin seemed to be having such a hard time. She pulls herself from the table and walks around the tables and up towards the beginning of Hufflepuff table and to her cousin. She taps her with gloved hands and kneels down. Raven quickly scurries from table to follow Lili and noses the girls back and oddly seems to be smiling at the little hufflepuff.
"You look a little lost there" She whispers. "Whats on your mind...."

Mary smiles. Slytherin had a Potter. My oh my. She looked over at Dristan, caught his eye with a nod, then poured from the bottle in front of her. She generally disposed cold blood, but her bottle here kept it just so. Her eyes swept over the student body, wondering what mischief they'd get up to this year.

Vic was a little disappointed that neither of her cousins would be in her house. But Rose would do well in Gryffindor and Albus would learn a little more about himself in Slytherin course that had been the subject of him getting teased by James. But they would do alright. A course like everyone she was surprised when the hat went with Slytherin but once she heard Scorpius, she clapped along with him. And she didn't care what anyone in her house though, she was supporting her family. So she wasn't going to hear anything from her house mates.

Mattie startled for a moment as an hand touched her shoulder and something touched her back. She glanced up to see her cousin standing there asking her a question.
"Yeah, I guess. Just Kiami got sorted to a different house." she whispered back trying not to bother the other students. "Do you know when we can leave?" she looked down and noticed the large dog and smiled softly petting his head.

Kiami smiled at Yelena as the two girls chatted over their plates, neither really eating. Every once in a while, she caught herself looking over at Mattie from the corner of her eye. Her heart strings tugging with sadness. Mattie truly was her best friend. The two girls had been at each other's hip from the moment they had met. She had really wanted to be sorted into Hufflepuff with her, but instead the hat had sorted her to Slythrin, and though she wore a smile, her heart had broken.
"Excuse me Yelena. I'll be right back."
After excusing herself, she stands smoothing her black robes when she sees Lilian and her pet, make their way to where Mattie sat, picking at and pushing her food around her plate. The sadness in her eyes, echoed what was in Kiami's heart.
She reached for Gomez, her comfort and found he wasn't in his normal spot. A quick look around the Slythrin table showed he wasn't hiding there either. On a hunch she scanned for Morticia, she was gone too. She wondered if the two had wondered off together, she knew they probably had. They always did.
She allowed Lilian a moment alone with Mattie, before she approached the two, and quietly laid a hand on the older girls shoulder, unable to look up at Mattie. Her voice slightly breaking as she whispered as quietly as possible.
"Lilian, I know Mattie is your cousin, but do you mind if I steal her for a moment? Her and I should probably talk."

"Its always hard being sorted into the houses different from your friends" She answered honestly. "But on the bright side you had a friend starting here, regardless of what house your sorted into. Despite the history that Hufflepuffs and Slytherins can never be friends is a lie..." She smiles, looking up as Kiami walks up to her. She stands looking between the two first years.
"You two will be okay. And as long as your make that effort, no house separation is going to stop your friendship" She smiled rested a gloved hand on Matties shoulder a moment before turning and walking away from the two girls to allow them to talk.

Mattie heard Kimai before she saw her and she blushed and tried to hide it before she turned to look at the girl she called her best friend. "Thanks Lili." she said with a soft whisper.
She looked back to her friend and stood upb excusing herself from the table. Not that anyone seemed to pay attention currently. She walked with Kiami into the hall and smiled giving her a hug. "I really am happy for you. I think you will do well. I was just sad that we weren't in the same house."
